Sonic R was at first released for the short-lived Sega Saturn in the late 90s, and was the only "3D Sonic" game that the console had, which wasn't even a proper game as Sonic X-treme (the one game slated as the 3D platformer with the hedgehog) got cancelled, and is one of the two games with a classic rendition of 3D Sonic (alongside Sonic World, and this being before Sonic Mania's special stages). It got ported to Windows and then Sonic Gems Collections for Gamecube and PS2; I played recently the GC version as it is virtually the same as the old PC versions but easier to run as emulating with Dolphin..
Sonic R is one of those games that I really liked as a kid, with the fun songs, colorful characters and stages, and the idea of racing as Sonic running around. While I always read on whether it was of poor quality, that didn't matter to little me who played it a lot and even sometimes had one or two of my cousins to play with me pretending to play Tag in the "Get 5 Balloons" mode.
So why do I begin like this for today's post?
The few times I have revisited this recently have been a bit...odd. It isn't that I haven't forgotten how to play the game, but since I have been used to play this game for that long and now I do expect something challenging even if it is simple, it does tend to be as long as playing the basic tracks once in a row at best...and at worst (which is also at most) simply play one race before forgetting. There is a reason behind why this feels like a pick-up-and-play arcade game now, but the truth is that there isn't much that the game can offer in variety if you know what to do.
But to be fair, anyone that has NOT played this before will likely be lost for quite a bit and spend more time figuring that out...not necessarily because of intended challenge, but at least might be more interesting to play at first and with one revisit rather than with two or three more.

Aunque siempre leí sobre si era de mala calidad, eso no le importaba al pequeño yo que lo jugaba mucho e incluso a veces tenía a uno o dos de mis primos para jugar conmigo simulando jugar Tag en el modo "Consigue 5 Globos".
Entonces, ¿por qué empiezo así el post de hoy?
Las pocas veces que he revisitado esto recientemente han sido un poco... extrañas. No es que no haya olvidado cómo se juega, pero como llevo tanto tiempo acostumbrado a jugar a este juego y ahora espero algo desafiante aunque sea sencillo, tiende a ser tan largo como jugar a las pistas básicas una vez seguidas en el mejor de los casos... y en el peor (que también es en el mejor de los casos) simplemente jugar una carrera antes de olvidarlo. Hay una razón detrás de por qué esto se siente como un juego de arcade pick-up-and-play ahora, pero la verdad es que no hay mucho que el juego puede ofrecer en la variedad si usted sabe qué hacer.
Pero para ser justos, cualquiera que NO haya jugado a esto antes probablemente se perderá durante un buen rato y pasará más tiempo averiguándolo... no necesariamente por el reto pretendido, pero al menos podría ser más interesante jugar al principio y con una sola revisita que con dos o tres más.

Sonic R's infamy does come for two main reasons: The first one is the vocal soundtrack...which is pretty much nothing more but a matter of taste (if you ask me, I LOVE the music, and I know so many others do), but the other one in particular is that the game looked like "the first game where you play as Sonic in real 3D" (so as to discount Sonic 3D Blast) and on top of that was a racing game...but didn't control as they thought Sonic would move in 3D as he would in later games.

Originally, the game was a Formula 1 racing game which was reworked to be a Sonic racing game after SEGA asked the developers at Traveller Tales to make one, and it shows in the controls: It doesn't feel as if you run as Sonic like a platformer, but rather you drive Sonic like in a racing game (there's even a button you can hold to run forward rather than holding up in the stick), which can be reminscent of tank controls because of how weird it can feel.
You can jump with most characters and use the shoulder buttons a la Wipeout to turn harder in a direction, but it is certainly a game that while doesn't seem too offensive when you are quite used to it (if not pretty simple and still a bit stiff to control), the first impressions new players had back in the 2010s (and so on) trying to play this are the reason why this game became so maligned in the first place.
Regardless of how you feel at any point of the controls, fumbling at first or having mastered them at the end, it does feel not like something intuitive but rather a thing you have to learn to get used to for a "platformer but with racing" game, which if anything doesn't get helped by the tracks having many, many paths that are not very well conveyed in the minimap and can once again be confusing for first-time players as the controls can be.
And speaking of the tracks...

The content is notoriously small for a game that was "trying to compete with Mario Kart", which I wouldn't say is exactly the intention this was made with...but nonetheless it is quite small and quick to eat through in a single playthrough as a result. If you want to get to the credits, it doesn't take more than an old arcade or NES game to get through all the tracks (except it is far easier) to get to the credits, and 100% completion is just a handful of steps on top of that.
There's 10 characters which do have a variety of gameplay gimmicks and speed: The first four are unlocked by default, Eggman is unlocked when completing all tracks normally, and the other four are unlocked by obtaining 5 Sonic medals in one run hidden in the tracks and finishing 3rd for a challenge race against them. And Super Sonic, the 10th character, is found by getting all the emeralds spread on most tracks...which you have to collect in a run AND finish first for them to count.
The character variety is a nice thought in concept but in execution is clearly unbalanced as well: For an example, Super Sonic is the fastest character and beyond broken if you can control him (Sonic is the second best thing due to his double jump and natural higher speed than the rest), while Amy cannot jump as she drives in a car and also turns worse, with the tradeoff of having a booster that requires rings...that barely lets you steer when active.

If anything, it makes sense that there aren't that many considering that the developers had to design for a racing game that is half-platforming, and has a variety of paths (confusingly shown and many not optimal, but variety nonetheless), but doesn't take away that the very moment you get a hang of these tracks and the controls, it won't last long before you are done with the game. And as I said at the beginning, I played this A LOT as a kid so I know the routes like the palm of my hand.
There's something to my own veredict I'd like to add from the context explained so far though, as well as how this can be looked at on a bubble.

This is probably what I'd call the definition of a game that does ooze some charm from the way it presents itself and does try to do something unique for the time it was made, but has the flaws that are the execution in handling (which is something you either get or not get used to) and the small (yet not entirely minimal) amount of content the game boasts. You could call it one of those "guilty pleasure" games, or for any fighting game fans out there, something close to a "kusoge" which is to say a game that has some weird playable stuff and might not be that polished...but could still be appreciated from said weirdness and aspects from the game not related to the gameplay itself.
My case for this is that I actually managed to play this with three other friends once.

It was a silly chaos, with one of them being pretty aimless as he struggled with the map design and controls, while the other two were doing better but still struggling, and I tried to cap myself by stopping and going in some tracks due to how I already knew well the game. In the last track, Radiant Emerald, which has virtually zero shortcuts, I picked Amy and barely got a 3rd place by outrunning at the very last second the one friend that still struggling hard but had a faster character.
Sonic R is a game that, on objective quality, has some neat visual presentation and an interesting take on the music with the vocal songs but is pretty much dead last in the discussion on other racers like Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing (...if it is even included there). But if you look beyond that, it is possible to find appreciation in how SEGA and Traveller Tales tried to bring Sonic into 3D in this way all the way into the Saturn as its classic design before Sonic Adventure, the music (EVERYBODY SUPER SONIC RACING), getting to master the controls and shortcuts to actually go fast through the tracks (if you consider that an achievement).
If you have the chance and really want to, use this as a curveball to cause some mischief in a party with friends if they want to play something 🤠
(Otherwise do give it a try on your own if this made you curious enough as it is pretty short, but don't be surprised if you don't end up enjoying it that much considering how the controls aged. If you HAVE mastered the controls and think the game is too easy now...just try beating the game as Amy.)
Fue un caos tonto, con uno de ellos bastante sin rumbo mientras luchaba con el diseño del mapa y los controles, mientras que los otros dos lo hacían mejor pero seguían luchando, y yo intentaba caparme parando y entrando en algunas pistas debido a que ya conocía bien el juego. En la última pista, Radiant Emerald, que tiene prácticamente cero atajos, elegí a Amy y apenas conseguí un 3er puesto superando en el último segundo al único amigo que seguía luchando duro pero tenía un personaje más rápido.
Sonic R es un juego que, en cuanto a calidad objetiva, tiene una presentación visual cuidada y una interesante versión de la música con las canciones vocales, pero que se queda prácticamente en el último puesto en el debate sobre otros juegos de carreras como Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing y Crash Team Racing (...si es que está incluido ahí). Pero si miras más allá, es posible encontrar aprecio en cómo SEGA y Traveller Tales intentaron llevar a Sonic a las 3D de esta forma hasta la Saturn como su diseño clásico antes de Sonic Adventure, la música (TODO EL MUNDO SUPER SONIC RACING), llegar a dominar los controles y atajos para realmente ir rápido por las pistas (si consideras eso un logro).
