Ah, yes, the one that had been the current Mario Kart game since the Wii U until the Switch 2 finally unveiled a new game coming for it.
Both in retrospective and even nowadays, MK8 definitely was a surprise in the visual department for how detailed the world and lightning was in Mario Kart of all things (even if some of the DLC Booster Course Pass tracks released later didn't get that same polish), but putting aside the Switch's success making it far more widely adopted, the Deluxe version benefited from boasting the previously DLC tracks for the Wii U in the base package plus actually giving it a proper Battle mode.
So...yeah, at least officially, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was basically the ultimate Mario Kart package to ever exist - but like the last two games I've recent talked about...I didn't really get many chances to sink in the GP alone until now.
Time for some Luigi time!
Getting 3 stars is...simpler now?
To my surprise as I looked the requeriments some hours after getting two bumpy GP runs that still resulted in 3-star runs...it seems that your ranking is now determined by a singular factor.
Did you get all those GP points?
Yep, all it takes to get 3 stars in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is to get 1st Place in all four races of a cup.
That suddenly explains why, amidst some races where I goofed around at the start or end, as well as a few where I was struck by several items and barely managed to catch up, I still got 3 stars at the end of the cups.
Mushroom Cup was mainly a thing of messing up early by accident but making it up later on - or not really making mistakes along the way and getting some huge lead that kept me safe in case of blue shells.
At Flower Cup though, they were a little bit more aggressive...still no blue shell rain like in Mario Kart DS, but the race at Shy Guy Falls felt closer than it had any right to because of another racer being somewhat close when I took one near the end of the final lap.
In case you are curious, I DID try the 200cc option before trying out the 150cc cups, and while I did finish Mushroom Cup with a first place finish, getting used to the sudden speed, brakedrifting in Mario Kart when usually it doesn't require it, and more importantly, getting slammed by items at unfortunate moments, impeded me from getting a perfect run back then.
So...yeah, I'll likely have something of that recorded whenever I can do it with a clean score.
I've only played two full 150cc cups so far, but I've definitely had a taste of many other tracks this game has through previous local events and tournaments of this game.
Battling and Time Attacking
Of course I had to try out those two modes to at least have an opinion of them. Battle mode in particular knowing how the original MK8 had a battle mode slapped on top of race tracks since for whatever reason they didn't bother with actual battle arenas - something rectified in the Deluxe re-release.
Balloon Battle is familiar yet a bit alien to me since I've been used to the original style where the balloons are your only shield between staying in or being eliminated. But as Mario Kart Wii introduced online play for versus mode, this mode was adjusted accordingly into a timed scuffle for points where whoever has the most wins.
Losing all your balloons doesn't mean elimination...but it sure means you'll lose a good chunk of points before respawning, so there's still a point on tracking racers on their last legs - just a bit more diluted between the higher amount of players and having a time limit to track down enough of them.
Shine Thief works like a variant of the version at Mario Kart Double Dash: Whoever holds the Shine for enough time until they finish their countdown wins - but the player holding it can easily drop it if hit by any player's items, making it a battle for who gets to keep it until the time expires with the Shine in their hands.
Good moment to add that in any battle mode, whoever's winning will have a golden crown placed on their head :)
There were a few more modes like Coin Runners and Renegade Roundup, but I think that I would feel more compelled to try the rest out if I had the chance todo it with another player.
And regarding Time Attack...well, the only track I tried in Time Attack was Waluigi Pinball, one of the tracks added by the Booster Course Pass - but as much as I tried with the vehicle parts and knowledge I have right now, I wasn't able to beat the 150cc staff ghost in it....
What else?
You know, I thought I would have more to say about the game when this is the first time in a while I could sink some single player minutes at it, but maybe it is because of the fact I've already played it a fair amount of times before in multiplayer whenever a chance comes up, as well as how other kart racers (or even just the older Mario Kart games) had me a bit more hooked on words because of particular details or speed.
Having a 200cc option here is sure interesting, but I guess that what adds to it feeling tougher than muscle memory expecting a simpler ride from Mario Kart, is that most cars here can be a bit heavy in the handling side unless you pick a combination with decent to high handling. Could be cool to see how far I can push it with more time, but at least right now while I'm writing this, I can't go for any more GP rounds...
But hey, there's a few other games I also got to try out for more than 30 minutes in single player, like-

Yeah, it is 3D World - no, I haven't got to try it out again with someone else, and I know it is designed for that.

Para mi sorpresa, mientras miraba los requisitos unas horas después de conseguir dos carreras de GP accidentadas que aún así resultaron en carreras de 3 estrellas... parece que tu clasificación ahora está determinada por un factor singular.

Sí, todo lo que hace falta para conseguir 3 estrellas en Mario Kart 8 Deluxe es conseguir el 1er puesto en las cuatro carreras de una copa.
Eso explica de repente por qué, en medio de algunas carreras en las que metí la pata al principio o al final, así como unas cuantas en las que me golpearon varios objetos y apenas conseguí remontar, seguí consiguiendo 3 estrellas al final de las copas.
La Copa Champiñón consistió principalmente en meter la pata al principio por accidente, pero recuperarla después, o no cometer errores por el camino y conseguir una ventaja enorme que me mantuviera a salvo en caso de conchas azules.
En la Copa Flor, sin embargo, fueron un poco más agresivos... seguía sin llover caparazones azules como en Mario Kart DS, pero la carrera en Shy Guy Falls estuvo más reñida de lo debido porque otro corredor estaba algo cerca cuando me llevé uno al final de la última vuelta.
Por si tienes curiosidad, yo probé la opción de 200cc antes de probar las copas de 150cc, y aunque terminé la Copa Champiñón con un primer puesto, acostumbrarme a la velocidad repentina, frenar en Mario Kart cuando normalmente no lo requiere y, lo que es más importante, ser golpeado por objetos en momentos desafortunados, me impidió conseguir una carrera perfecta por aquel entonces.

Por supuesto tenía que probar estos dos modos para al menos tener una opinión de ellos. Shine Thief funciona como una variante de la versión de Mario Kart Double Dash: Quien sostenga el Shine durante el tiempo suficiente hasta terminar la cuenta atrás gana - pero el jugador que lo sostiene puede soltarlo fácilmente si es golpeado por los objetos de cualquier jugador, convirtiéndolo en una batalla por quién se queda con él hasta que expire el tiempo con el Shine en sus manos.

Tener una opción de 200cc es interesante, pero supongo que lo que hace que parezca más difícil que la memoria muscular que espera una conducción más sencilla de Mario Kart es que la mayoría de los coches pueden ser un poco pesados en cuanto a manejo, a menos que elijas una combinación con un manejo entre decente y alto. Estaría bien ver hasta dónde puedo llegar con más tiempo, pero al menos ahora mismo, mientras escribo esto, no puedo ir a más rondas de GP...
