No, I haven't watched the Sonic 3 movie...but I will do that tomorrow, which is why I thought on playing Sonic Adventure 2 before that [and before the year ends] - mainly knowing that I actually have never completed SA2 from start to end before. Or at least, I don't have the memory of doing so before.
...And of course, getting sidetracked by the extra trinkets the game is known about, as well as adding a bit of input of how I had been in what I played.
Note that I played this in the Steam version but with several recommended mods to enhance and fix oddities from the port.
Sonic is in Prison. It's Tails Time!
So...the file I had saved on Steam already had City Escape, the first boss afterwards and Knuckles's first stage completed, so booting up the game today ended up throwing me at Tails's first stage: Prison Lane.
...But I forgot to take screenshots of that stage when I played it, so here's instead a screenshot of a later Tails stage [Mission Street].
The way the mech for me can walk fast-ish if I hold a direction straight on the keyboard but slows down as soon as I try to hit diagonals or turn around always has me wondering if the mech is just that janky or if it is only that, for some reason, trying to do diagonals without an analog stick causes that with the mech.
But putting that aside, at least the level was alright, not something spectacular but it is still running through a prison while you lock on multiple mechs and destroying them with a single swoop [which is also part of the Mech gameplay: Aiming for multi-target combos for higher scores].
Of course, afterwards, what comes next is Sonic-
Hahahahah. Nope, I wanted to go to the Chao Garden. Turns out that in that existing, virtually fresh save I hadn't touched it yet, so I went there with the Chaos Drives I had got from the stage, shaked an egg and saw it hatch.
And...I'll talk more about this little smiley guy later. I had a grin on my face when I saw that the Chao had a silly grin as well.
Now we're going about Sonic escaping the prison he was at thanks to Amy, and going over one of Adventure 2's most iconic stages - Metal Harbor.
And here is where you get the upgrade that lets you light dash over ring trails, a necessary tool in this stage but also handy in some future ones when you can insta-zip through those when the spindash has been noticeably nerfed in SA2 [both in the speed you get and even the amount of time it takes for you to start one].
Being basic enough to not be too difficult for newcomers while having a few ways where you can maneuver faster [enemies with homing attacks, using the light dash earlier when you revisit the stage, knowing where there are rails] can make it fun to revisit while it has this big style between the msuic and the fact you're barreling through this harbor as the sunlight splashes into you [it doesn't even seem like a prison was nearby😅]
And of course, when the game has City Escape ending the level with a mad truck chase, Metal Harbor had to catch up and make you ride a giant rocket that makes you land into a tunnel where you skateboard with a chunk of the rocket into the Goal Ring.
Oh yeah, and Sonic and Shadow finally face each other after this stage- oh wait he's already down.
Huh. It's always funny how gameplay varies from story when these two hedgehogs referred to be equal [this comes better into play much later] are involved in this little scuffle where you can easily whoop him off.
...And turns out Eggman set the island to explode in minutes.
That is how you end up racing through Green Forest - complete with a song that fits perfectly the rush its trying to convey while you run through loops made out of trees. Although the occasional jank of the physics may act up here sometimes if you are here in your first visit [mainly if you decide to not just keep running straight during some of those half-pipe like tree things].
And yes, I went back to the Chao Garden again. You do that by finding a Chao Key in the stage and taking it to the end - it isn't difficult in most cases and you can come back to it anytime after you do it once with a character.
I hatched the other egg and gave that Chao a penguin. Now it has eyebrows.
It is sure nice to have these little things as a diversion to...wait a minute.

Oh hey, time to talk about Knuckles stages. And to save time, I'll talk about ALL the ones I played in this recent revisit at once to save time.
You know a funny thing? The ghosts/boos/those stupid things that appeared here at Pumpkin Hill were a reason I wasn't able to often finish the game many years ago - as young little me was afraid of how those damn things looked. I even had got jumpscared by one hiding in one of Pumpkin Hill's areas when playing it on the Wii and the controller rumbled. My brother was watching and he lost it in laughter as he saw me scream from that.
But no more chuckles with Knuckles. At least for Pumpkin Hill, I knew that the most likely areas where they appeared were at some of the gravestones - although I think I still got caught off guard by one [as they aren't even like, enemies you see from far away that can hurt you, but more so a quick spook when stepping in an invisible specific place because the devs wanted them to be].
I think that Aquatic Mine was the stage that had me walled back then though because of how the stage had way more areas to explore while being enclosed...so the chances of running into a freak of a ghost were higher. But this time, Knuckles was ready to flex his muscles.
Too bad I still got spooked by at least one or two that were sitting in the high area of the stage. Not yell or jump, but you know...flinch. The second one felt mean when it was placed right on top of a Chao Key box - like a beast preying on me wanting to see the little creatures I had been taking care of.
At least the last emerald shard I had to find in this run was funny - I thought that I had to find a way to open this mysterious door [as the hints and radar pointed it to be the palce]...but turns out I just had to dig the ground where I was standing to call it a day.
The next Knuckles stage is named, and I'm not pulling your leg on this one, Death Chamber.
But the stage itself is really just a mix of being an egyptian temple or something mixed with technology stuff [being Eggman's base] - and here you also run with these common robots that are, interestingly enough, common models of one of Sonic Adventure 1's main characters.
E-102 Gamma, which was one of Eggman's new E-Series mechs in SA1 and a playable character was quite interesting story-wise [and I don't talk too much about it because it would be cool to do it myself in a SA1 post], and yet there's something that hits about how his story ends there while Eggman just casually kept trapping animals into robots and made more like him [except that in SA2, they are just normal enemies lmao]

But anyways, now that Pumpkin Hill and Aquatic Mine are gone, there is no longer any danger of running into those freaky faced ghosts anymore-

I actually had a fast yell from running head first into a GIANT ghost on a random hallway - and as my brother had visit the moment I was playing...I decided to close off the game to avoid any possible inconveniences from getting jumped by THESE INFERNAL THINGS-

I told you I would come back to talk about them.
I named the smiling one Ponche and named the other one [which has a blank expression - which is why I gave it the penguin eyebrows] Orville.
I just thought Ponche was a funny name befitting the silly guy - which reminds me that its funny how while "punch" is "golpe" in Spanish [the punching verb],"punch" gets translated when used as in "cream punch"...as "ponche".
Ponche.
And I named the other one Orville because he looked somewhat more serious [and I thought on the name after thinking of a The Rumble Fish 2 character].
The reason why Ponche has no animal traits is because I've only given him fruit and chaos drives, which don't change his appearance, while I've only given fruit and animals to Orville to compensate. And Ponche is a bit lighter for now because I've only visited the garden with Hero characters so far - and treating a Chao well with a Hero or Dark character will make then align accordingly.
I even got Ponche into the Beginner Mushroom Forest race to get my first win in the Chao Races, as that is the one race where the only stat that influences the result is the Run stat [since the other ones will demand swimming, flying or power stats].
Before I wrap up the Chao misadventures - mainly because you only get the things to upgrade them in stats through playing levels and picking up what enemies drop, I want to highlight this shot of a sleepy Chao sitting near an unnaturally mad one during the intro of another Chao race I attempted.

So...between Sonic doing his thing up until the terrible Knuckles incident of 87, there was a moment where Tails had to chase the President. He's just...the President, but yeah, you do that and - woah.
I already knew of this before - actually having an achievement for beating the kart race mode's hardest race in first place since 2021 - but with how long it had been since the last time I had played it, it was funny to remember how neat it was despite being stuffed into a platformer game [that, and being smoother to control than the Twinkle Cart segment in Adventure 1]
The way handling works is that the car will normally have a firm grip when turning, although it doesn't steer fast enough to clear sharp turns. So...what do you do on those?
When you let go of the accel even for a moment and slam it back, the car will lose grip and be way more lose to steer, visibly looking like its drifting. And not only that is exactly what you can use to take sharp turns [as THAT will make you steer fast enough for those]...but also doesn't seem to make you lose speed while it's happening.
I guess the benefit of keeping grip is that you have the machine steadier on straights, but there's definitely something super cool about letting the grip go loose and being able to snake around any and all turns without a care.
And yes, not too long after beating the stage normally, I went back to it a few more times just to get an A-Rank [the highest possible] in it - as it was strictly about getting a fast time in Mission 1 rather than any other possible conditions that Mission 2-5 could add.
Although you will want to go for rings and balloons, as each 20 rings you get will let you use a boost - and balloons will grant you a batch of rings at once, often resulting in a free boost from tapping one.
And...now what?
Well, it is quite late at night at the time of writing this, so I will have to continue playing this game tomorrow - who knows if I may get to finish the Hero Story [and do the entire Dark Story] before the year ends. Probably may only finish the Hero Story before I have to run off to the movies though 😅
