Recently I had been playing through several Contra games, and so far I had talked about both the original Contra game for Arcades and its even more iconic conversion for the NES. With its huge success, Konami made a sequel that aimed to be even more explosive, with bigger monsters and weapons...and to be way more challenging, cementing further the franchise's reputation for difficulty.
The NES port of this game, known as Super C (which is its American name), does keep a lot from this game yet adding some more flair and length, but it definitely gets to surpass the first Contra with better weapons and harder challenge. However, while both arcade games feel shorter than their NES counterparts, Arcade Super Contra is WAY harder than the NES version than when you compare the original games between each other.
Once again the game is on a vertical screen aspect with graphics of higher resolution but with much less color used, and all weapons show up as...actual weapon sprites instead of icons with a letter (which can make recognizing weapons much harder). Gameplay-wise, it seems you can fire many more bullets at a time than in the NES version, but if you hold Up or Down, your jumping arc will be higher or lower than usual, which both feels a bit weird and can accidentally get you killed if you didn't know this. However, you can find "shells" in the overhead sections which activate by pressing both buttons at the same time and act as bombs that clear the entire screen.
The biggest difference however is that while there are only 5 levels instead of 8 (though they are separated, unlike Arcade Contra where they felt more like a pair of huge stages), there are way more enemies and bullets trying to kill you, and some bosses are either not seen in the NES game or are stronger (for example, the first stage's helicopter takes much more to be destroyed and it is immediately followed by a turret boss).
Taking in mind that there isn't that much strategy that can be carried over from NES Super C, and having to get around the controls and many more enemies, Arcade Super Contra is considered one of the hardest Contra games ever despite its length. For that matter, it keeps the first game's restriction of only allowing you to continue limited times, though you can still raise the amount of lives to 7 and continues to 5 through dipswitches.
In any case even with the steep challenge yet shorter length, Super Contra on the Arcade is still another respectable game on the franchise, and one that on top of being easily played on emulators, is also avaliable in the Contra Anniversary Collection. And well, if you want to try beat this game without using the extra lives/continues dipswitch...well, what else do I have to say? A lot of practice and watch videos of someone clearing it on one credit to learn strategies; you are not going to get over this one with the default settings unless you keep fighting and become a hard-boiled veteran.

Sin embargo, la mayor diferencia es que, aunque sólo hay 5 niveles en lugar de 8 (aunque están separados, a diferencia de Arcade Contra, donde parecían un par de escenarios enormes), hay muchos más enemigos y balas que intentan matarte, y algunos jefes no aparecen en el juego de NES o son más fuertes (por ejemplo, el helicóptero de la primera fase tarda mucho más en ser destruido y le sigue inmediatamente un jefe torreta).
Teniendo en cuenta que no hay mucha estrategia que se pueda trasladar desde el Super C de NES, y teniendo que sortear los controles y muchos más enemigos, Arcade Super Contra se considera uno de los juegos de Contra más difíciles de la historia a pesar de su longitud. Además, mantiene la restricción del primer juego de sólo permitirte continuar un número limitado de veces, aunque puedes aumentar la cantidad de vidas a 7 y los continues a 5 mediante dipswitches.
