And if you wonder why, that's because its an exclusive to the VIRTUAL BOOOOOOOOY.
This game is to me like what Tempest 2000 is for the Jaguar: That one game from that one weird and obscure console that flopped for a reason...that is very good considering the console its for.
Except that unlike Tempest 2000, this one hasn't been officially re-released in any capacity yet- not even on the 3DS which was their succesful 3D portable that did what they wanted to do with the Virtual Boy with no-glasses 3D.
In any case though, since I haven't played Punch-Out Wii enough to know how much I like that one, this one is currently my technical favorite out of all the Punch Out games. It's not a Punch Out game in the name, but it IS a game made by Nintendo and has all the charm and snappy feeling you'd expect.
An actual showcase of power
Teleroboxer is a game that uses separate moving sprites to show the big robotic fighters moving in a smooth way, in the same way that Joy Mech Fight and Vectorman did for their characters [or Ballz 3D, if you even want to acknowledge that], except here is used to a great effect to make the fights look very swift.
The Virtual Boy actually was a 32-bit console, which showed the most in this game. Despite the one-color palette, which for the record, is actually RED and Black in a real VB, this game looks pretty good thanks to that, and the fluidity of the action with the detailed sprites along with its soundtrack prove that.
Learn how to throw a good punch
The controller looks like this:
So the game uses both D-Pads as your separate hands, and the shoulder buttons are for you to throw punches.
You can actually hold down with just one of the hands to block low in both sides, but you gotta make sure to raise both manually if you want to block your face, or just one if you know which side you're going to get hit.
There are four machine gun moves you can use by either holding...
- Both pads away from each other [Machinegun hooks, strongest but riskiest]
- Both pads inwards [Machinegun body blows, weakest of all but charges while blocking low]
- Upwards [Machinegun jabs, can be charged while blocking high but the last fighters can block it]
- Downwards [Machingun uppercuts, hits well and is reliable, but you'll be left ducking if you try charging this]
If the hands start flashing, you can unleash them.
ALL of these need to be used carefully, but the uppercuts can be your fastest, strongest option if you can use it.
For your fights after the very first one as a complete beginner, you'll likely only be relying on your jabs and block reaction- unless you get them dizzy for a chance to machinegun their faces in, or got a strategy to dizzy and machinegun attack if you're an expert.
Oh, you also have hooks by holding only the left or right hand and push their button when its flashing [leaning to the side in itself by doing this can also be useful at times], as well as having normal uppercuts by holding one of the hands down. These normal attacks can still be situational against stronger opponents, but are very effective counter tools if you can figure out the spot to use them- especialy since a few of these well-timed bad boys and you'll get that dizzy chance to machinegun them up.
Pagero: Learn the controls...NOW
He's the first fighter and obviously the easiest, which is why you should figure out all the things that you can do with him as the test dummy. He'll also force you to learn the basics as he can start blocking your jabs...often leaving himself open by laughing at you after that to teach you the meaning of a counter.
Don't try to spam machinegun attacks with him either- he's likely going to dodge most of them unless he's dizzy or he's messing around. This guy knowing to not always eat those will be your first signal to know that you won't be able to win by spamming those all day.
Overall though, he above Glass Joe and Gabby Jay, but he's definitely no match for anyone that knows how to play this game already. In almost all of his attacks, he'll look stunned if you block them, so counter attack chances are plenty.
If you got used to the controls, try beating this guy without getting hit once! It is certainly the easiest thing to do with him, unlike with everyone else...
Spokong: Did you learn how to play yet?
If you didn't, then this guy will be a difficulty spike, because he's going to force you to actually watch out for hits, which you can tell when his fists are flashing before an attack, not spam attacks...and deal with gimmicks.
His belly is completely impervious to damage and will laugh at you if you body blow him...but sometimes if you try to hit his head, he'll actually hide it down there, in which case you NEED to body blow for it to pop out- although with some attacks of him you block even when he's doing that, you have to still aim high to hit his head.
He's a pretty simple fighter compared to the rest, but is also the game's first knowledge check for anyone thinking that you wouldn't have to learn the ropes...and many beginners have expressed how this guy is where it gets real hard.
You can actually beat him without getting hit even with just single jabs and body blows when needed as long as you can always wait to block and punish though- I tried that and was succesful.
It isn't the flashiest or fastest way...but if you need to get used to the game, try doing that excercise, and if you're succesful, you will see how useful the simple art of blocking can be. You'll need it.
Dorihey: Jab that thing quickly
This is the first fighter that will actually start pushing your reactions to block and jab, as well as looking out for hook attempts.
You'll also have to jab or duck/weave out of his drill attack, which breaks through your high guard. At least in my experience, its actually easy to stop that attack with a quick jab if you can react to it, which means that this fight is possible to beat if it starts relying too much on that with some good ol' one-twos.
But again, if you were struggling hard against Spokong, I can see how this robot can mess you up: It definitely expects you to be paying attention and being used to the controls.
Bomkun: Literal knowledge check
Bomkun is a slippery clown that, while can be dismantled before he does this if you are a speedrunner, chances are that your first time fighting him will end in him activating his countdown.
Unlike the other fights, this is the only one where you HAVE to beat him in the first round, as if he finishes his 50 second countdown...you're dead.
...So as soon as he leaves himself open for the final 10 seconds, you have to machinegun him before its too late, preferably with the hard-hitting Machinegun Hooks.
Didn't know that you had the machinegun attacks available? Too bad, you're screwed.
I actually lost my first attempt against him in this revisit because I didn't know of the Machinegun Hooks or Uppercuts, and the Machinegun Body Blows which I did know were of very little use.
Prin and Ikanger: Fight like a real boxer now
These are fast enough to be a danger if you aren't at your top reaction game to block and punish their attacks, as they barely leave themselves open for any machinegun attacks, and will definitely crush you quickly if you don't learn their quirks.
Prin can be jabbed a handful of times if you are patient with your timing, but you always got to be ready to block her low hits, slaps, or even...uhhh...just remember that anything that starts flashing is an attack. Don't forget to block high with both hands.
Ikanger is the most boxer-like fight from what I played, as only guard and jabs, as well as knowing about the hook and uppercut combo it starts using when its angry to block and punish accordingly, will be able to let you get through this one.
Both of these will be THE true test of skill you'll get: If Spokong was a reminder that you have to use your block and body blows techniques, and Dorihey was the wake-up call from your trainer to start using your moves properly, then these are the real get-in-the-ring fights that won't hold back for a beginner.
Oh, and for Ikanger, not only be ready to block low for the little kangaroo attacks AND the absurdly strong uppercuts...but do NOT attack the little kangaroo either. That instantly triggers the angry mode and you'll be sorry you did that early in the fight if you haven't learned to fight it well enough for it to get angry anyways through enough damage.
Tukikage: You're not ready for this one
I lost SEVERAL times to this guy.
Some because I accidentally missed the right block moment and got hit when both of us were at the edge of death, some because I made a mistake with less than a quarter of health but literally getting combo'd by him as he landed several attacks without me being able to guard due to being dizzied...
...And some because I kept trying a funny strategy but he knew better and used uppercuts instead of hooks.
At its core, this fight can be like a harder version of Ikanger's: More need of fast jabs and fast reaction time to block, but here you also have to watch out for his afterimage hooks- which you can actually counter with your own [preferably using them from the side he's coming from instead of the opposite], and his teleport trick into either an instant hook or a reactable-but-still-fast uppercut.
There's a trick you can do that is very risky and definitely not continue-friendly...but worked out for me at the end.
Any time you try to position yourself for Machinegun Hooks, he'll always use the teleport. If you're lucky, you can time the button press for the first hoook of yours to land right as he appears, rewarding you with a huge chunk of damage.
...If you're unlucky though, which is more likely if you actually try to do this twice in a row, timing the button press well when he appears with a low weave into an uppercut means that you'll get punished.
But hey, in my winning attempt, hitting at least three of those was enough to get him down to his last legs...in the first round.
There's probably better strategies beyond risking myself like that or trying to chip him down bit by bit- there was one round where I was actually pummeled for like 10 second straight by hook and upper cut attempts when he was down on health and I blocked it all...then he stopped for one second and started again then caught me with one of those hits. But this is definitely the game's toughest challenge.
If you thought Spokong or Dorihey were hard, then chance are that you are not making it this far unless you apply yourself.
If you actually breezed through those two, and had even got cocky after beating Prin and Ikanger on your first attempts...do NOT let your guard down against this guy.
The Legendary Champ: Wait, what do you mean I can't fight the champ?
Whoops, forgot to mention that if you don't beat Tukikage without a perfect Win-Loss record, or in other words, without losing a single fight in your save file, you're not fighting the true final boss of the game.
So...I can't tell you about how that went for me. At least for now.
I know how it looks and I definitely know that its the toughest fight of them all pushing your skills to the limit, but I'll leave that for the day when I actually get there as a surprise for y'all.
...NOT
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] After writing that, I actually started running the game again and got a succesful run where I managed to beat all without losing. I won my fight against the legendary champ...a robotic cat.
10 LOSSES LATER...
The crazy thing is that there's two things that can make this fight into a more easily manageable one.
The first one is that with a rather precise timing, you can actually alternate between both punches for a rapid-fire style flurry of jabs...and these can hit HARD if you can keep it for enough time. If you want a demostration of how insane that can be, this TAS is literally showing how would it look if someone was able to execute that start to end in every fight.
The second one is that throwing jabs in its panic mode causes it to leap from above. If I held my guard in the right side and jabbed with the left, it would always try to hit the right side...so by baiting that attack and always countering with a left hook when it hit the right hand, I was able to whittle it down consistently. Though apparently its even possible to do this trick just by throwing left hooks, but it might be much riskier if you attempt it and it tries something else.Did I mention that the pilot of this thing was a LITERAL CAT.
Oh yeah, and my first title defense, which is to fight any of the eight fighters in the game from the get-go in panic mode survival style, was against THIS thing once again.
... but you can see how effective that stragey I mentioned is with how I survived that title defense fight.
Conclusion
This game is awesome. Even if it is short, and even if it might not be beginner-friendly because as the old game it is, it obviously doesn't have any manual or introduction to controls, it feels pretty intuitive when you get the hang of it, and is another good meal of Nintendo boxing if you already had played through every other Punch-Out game.
It is a shame that this game is obscure, and more so because a port to the 3DS or Switch could definitely have got more people knowing about this...but hey, the player teleroboxer Harry [seen in the boxart and intro] had a spirit in Smash Ultimate.
That's technically something.
But in any case it hits the spot for that type of classic arcade games that I used to enjoy: Bombastic, fast-paced, can be real tough but can feel real rewarding to master...and kinda insultingly, does the whole "no wimps from here onward" thing some games did for their easy modes- without even having an easy mode.
The true final fight [which you CAN lose and retry without penalty] is something quite crazy of a final skill test for the true fighters, and what you get for beating it does make you feel like a bona-fide boxing champion with the extra details it adds.
That will be a story for when I do come back with the champion belt though, but until then, I think I have talked more than enough about this little gem.
And yes, you might be able to tell with this post that I was actually feeling quite inspired about telling you of this one. It's a blast through and through that lifted up my mood.
Oh, and the screenshots were from playing the game in an emulator with the usual red-and-black colors changed to white-and-black. I think it should be obvious why I wanted to change that usual color scheme. Don't forget to set Automatic Pause to ON if you are trying this game for the first time- both players can heal between rounds if you do...but only the enemy does if you set it OFF.
Or you can just skip that intermission screen immediately, your choice.

- Ambas almohadillas alejadas la una de la otra [Ganchos de ametralladora, el más fuerte pero el más arriesgado].
- Ambas almohadillas hacia dentro [Golpes de ametralladora al cuerpo, el más débil de todos pero carga mientras bloquea bajo].
- Hacia arriba [Golpes de ametralladora, se puede cargar mientras se bloquea alto pero los últimos luchadores pueden bloquearlo]
- Hacia abajo [Machinegun uppercuts, golpea bien y es fiable, pero te quedarás esquivando si intentas cargarlo].
Si las manos empiezan a parpadear, puedes desatarlas.
TODOS ellos deben usarse con cuidado, pero los uppercuts pueden ser tu opción más rápida y fuerte si sabes usarlos.

Estos ataques normales todavía pueden ser situacionales contra oponentes más fuertes, pero son herramientas de contraataque muy eficaces si puedes encontrar el momento para usarlos, especialmente porque con unos cuantos de estos golpes bien sincronizados tendrás la oportunidad de ametrallarlos.
Pagero: Aprende los controles...AHORA
Es el primer luchador y obviamente el más fácil, por lo que deberías averiguar todo lo que puedes hacer con él como muñeco de pruebas. De hecho, puedes derrotarlo sin recibir golpes, incluso con jabs y golpes al cuerpo cuando sea necesario, siempre y cuando puedas esperar a bloquear y castigar; yo lo intenté y tuve éxito.
No es la forma más llamativa o rápida... pero si necesitas acostumbrarte al juego, intenta hacer ese ejercicio, y si tienes éxito, verás lo útil que puede ser el simple arte de bloquear. Lo necesitarás.
Dorihey: Pégale rápido en la cara
Este es el primer luchador que realmente comenzará a empujar tus reacciones para bloquear y jab, así como mirar hacia fuera para los intentos de gancho.
Al menos en mi experiencia, es fácil detener ese ataque con un jab rápido si puedes reaccionar a él, lo que significa que esta pelea es posible de vencer si empieza a depender demasiado de eso con algunos buenos y viejos uno-dos.
Pero, de nuevo, si estabas luchando duro contra Spokong, puedo ver cómo este robot puede fastidiarte: Definitivamente espera que prestes atención y estés acostumbrado a los controles.
Bomkun: Literal te va a hacer un knowledge check
Bomkun es un payaso escurridizo que, si bien puede ser desmantelado antes de que lo haga si eres un speedrunner, lo más probable es que la primera vez que luches contra él acabe activando su cuenta atrás.
A diferencia de los otros combates, este es el único en el que TIENES que derrotarle en el primer asalto, ya que si termina su cuenta atrás de 50 segundos... estás muerto.
...Así que tan pronto como se abra durante los últimos 10 segundos, tienes que ametrallarlo antes de que sea demasiado tarde, preferiblemente con los contundentes ganchos ametralladores.
¿No sabías que disponías de ataques de ametralladora? ***Qué pena, estás jodido.
En realidad perdí mi primer intento contra él en esta revisita porque no conocía los Ganchos Ametralladores ni los Uppercuts, y los Golpes Corporales Ametralladores que sí conocía me sirvieron de muy poco.
Prin e Ikanger: Lucha como un verdadero boxeador ahora
Son lo suficientemente rápidos como para ser un peligro si no estás en tu mejor juego de reacción para bloquear y castigar sus ataques, ya que apenas se dejan abiertos para cualquier ataque de ametralladora, y definitivamente te aplastarán rápidamente si no aprendes sus peculiaridades.
Prin se puede pinchar un puñado de veces si eres paciente con tu timing, pero siempre tienes que estar listo para bloquear sus golpes bajos, bofetadas, o incluso... uhhh... recuerda que cualquier cosa que empiece a parpadear es un ataque. No olvides bloquear alto con ambas manos.
Ikanger es el combate más parecido a un boxeador por lo que he jugado, ya que sólo la guardia y los jabs, así como conocer el combo de gancho y uppercut que empieza a usar cuando se enfada para bloquear y castigar en consecuencia, podrán permitirte superarlo.
Ambos serán LA verdadera prueba de habilidad que tendrás: Si Spokong fue un recordatorio de que tienes que usar tus técnicas de bloqueo y golpes al cuerpo, y Dorihey fue la llamada de atención de tu entrenador para que empezaras a usar tus movimientos correctamente, entonces estos son los verdaderos combates de entrada en combate que no frenarán a un principiante.
Ah, y para Ikanger, no sólo debes estar preparado para bloquear bajo los ataques del pequeño canguro y los absurdamente fuertes uppercuts... sino que debes EVITAR darle al pequeño canguro. Algunas porque accidentalmente me perdí el momento correcto de bloqueo y me golpeó cuando ambos estábamos al borde de la muerte, algunas porque cometí un error con menos de un cuarto de salud pero literalmente siendo combo'd por él mientras descargaba varios ataques sin que yo pudiera protegerme debido a estar mareado...
...Y otras porque seguí intentando una estrategia curiosa, pero él lo sabía mejor y usó uppercuts en lugar de ganchos.
En el fondo, esta pelea puede ser como una versión más dura de la de Ikanger: Más necesidad de jabs rápidos y tiempo de reacción rápido para bloquear, pero aquí también tienes que tener cuidado con sus ganchos afterimage, que en realidad puedes contrarrestar con los tuyos [preferiblemente usándolos desde el lado del que viene en lugar del opuesto], y su truco de teletransporte en un gancho instantáneo o un uppercut reaccionable pero rápido.
Hay un truco que puedes hacer que es muy arriesgado y definitivamente no es fácil de continuar... pero al final me funcionó.
*Si tienes suerte, puedes sincronizar la pulsación del botón para que el primer gancho tuyo caiga justo cuando él aparece, lo que te recompensará con una gran cantidad de daño.
...Pero si no tienes suerte, lo que es más probable si intentas hacerlo dos veces seguidas, si pulsas bien el botón cuando aparezca con un giro bajo y un uppercut, serás castigado.
Pero bueno, en mi intento ganador, golpear al menos tres de esos fue suficiente para dejarlo en las últimas... en el primer asalto.

Probablemente haya mejores estrategias que arriesgarme así o intentar reducirlo poco a poco. Hubo un asalto en el que me golpeó durante 10 segundos seguidos con ganchos e intentos de corte superior cuando le quedaba poca salud y lo bloqueé todo... entonces paró un segundo y volvió a empezar y me alcanzó con uno de esos golpes. Pero este es definitivamente el reto más difícil del juego.
Si pensabas que Spokong o Dorihey eran difíciles, lo más probable es que no llegues tan lejos a menos que te esfuerces.
Si no te costó nada superar a esos dos, e incluso te pusiste gallito tras vencer a Prin e Ikanger en tus primeros intentos... NO bajes la guardia contra este tipo.
The Legendary Champ: Espera, ¿qué quieres decir con que no puedo luchar contra el campeón?
Whoops, olvidé mencionar que si no vences a Tukikage sin un récord perfecto de victorias y derrotas, o en otras palabras, sin perder una sola pelea en tu archivo de guardado, no estás luchando contra el verdadero jefe final del juego.
Así que... no puedo contarte cómo me fue a mí. Al menos por ahora.
Sé lo que parece y definitivamente sé que es el combate más duro de todos y que lleva tus habilidades al límite, pero lo dejaré para el día en que realmente llegue allí como una sorpresa para todos vosotros.

! [Hidden Spoiler Text] Después de escribir eso, realmente empecé a correr el juego de nuevo y conseguí una carrera exitosa donde me las arreglé para vencer a todos sin perder. Gané mi pelea contra el campeón legendario... un gato robótico.
10 PÉRDIDAS MÁS TARDE...
Lo loco es que hay dos cosas que pueden hacer que esta pelea sea más fácil de manejar.
La primera es que, con una sincronización bastante precisa, puedes alternar ambos golpes para una ráfaga de jabs de estilo rápido... y éstos pueden golpear DURO si puedes mantenerlos el tiempo suficiente. Si quieres una demostración de lo loco que puede ser, este TAS está literalmente mostrando cómo se vería si alguien fuera capaz de ejecutar eso de principio a fin en cada pelea.
La segunda es que lanzar jabs en su modo pánico hace que salte desde arriba. Si mantenía la guardia en el lado derecho y lanzaba un gancho con la izquierda, siempre intentaba golpear por el lado derecho... así que provocando ese ataque y contraatacando siempre con un gancho de izquierda cuando golpeaba con la derecha, era capaz de reducirlo de forma consistente. Aunque aparentemente es incluso posible hacer este truco sólo lanzando ganchos de izquierda, pero puede ser mucho más arriesgado si lo intentas y él intenta otra cosa.¿Mencioné que el piloto de esta cosa era un GATO LITERAL.
