One of the games I really used to like playing back when my DS Lite was entirely intact and had a flashcart to go with it. I always had a thing for Tetris games ever since I had Tetrisphere on the N64, but the portable plus that was Tetris DS just for being on the Nintendo DS, as well as how this allowed for some fun multiplayer games many years ago with my friends at the university, and the variety of game modes it offered.
The modes you can play are the following:
- Standard: Play Marathon, Line Clear or VS CPU. The main mode is Marathon, where you have to keep clearing lines and progressively get faster at playing due to the block dropping speed, cycling through several NES game motifs along the way. At the fastest of speeds, you'll have to resort to using the lenience time that rotating pieces here gives you (as well as to get over gaps with some pieces, if you can), but it is great to reach the end after the panic rush that are the last 5 levels with their crazy speed...and then the classic Tetris theme kicking in on the last stretch.
- Push: A VS-only mode (don't worry, there's a VS CPU mode) where you have to clear two or more lines simultaneously to push the floating field into the edge of the opponent's side...and avoid that the opponent pushes it to your edge. It is a bit hard to get from how it starts with two floating floating piece you need to start placing pieces on top of (as well as how you are forced to make 2+ line clears...often without I pieces because you can't drop anything over holes here, unless there's a block avoiding that it falls off) and how the rules can sort of work, but it can be entertaining when you sort of get the idea.
But for the love of everything don't try playing the Lv.5 CPU on your first try; even if you are good at Tetris, you'll definitely be thrown off enough by the rules while the AI constantly stacks perfectly in the game's rules to send you into the corner.
- Mission: Clear missions given to you by the game quickly or else you'll get hit with a penalty of garbage blocks below you. In Marathon, missions will start getting harder as you keep playing, and the time you have to complete them smaller. In Time Trial, instead there's a set of missions you have to complete as fast as you can. In any case, this is an interesting twist to the formula, even though sometimes it might throw you some real curveballs.
- Puzzle: You have several missions in which you have to pick the pieces (and where are they oriented) to place them into the field in the right order to clear all of the pieces visible. That's all. It is pretty simple but at least its nice to have a traditional puzzle mode included in here.
- Touch: The one Tetris DS mode where the Touch Screen is heavily used. It is actually pretty inventive compared to what you expected (Tetris with touch controls): The main Tower mode has you sliding pieces from left to right and spinning them (if there's room for them to spin...and if you aren't playing Level 4 or 5) to clear lines until you can get to lower a caged balloon guy into the ground to win.
There's another mode called Touch Puzzle in it which gives you several puzzles where you have to slide the pieces to achieve whatever the mission asks you to do.
- Catch: Instead of moving the pieces dropping into a field...you move a small block that has to make contact with the falling blocks to form 4x4 blocks that can explode for points and clearing up your attached gold blocks. You'll lose health if a block falls off the edge or if you hit a Metroid...but you'll also have higher chances of having nowhere to run or rotate to avoid Metroids if your "shape" turns too carelessly big. The only way to get points and stay afloat is to do those 4x4 grids, which will turn gray and explode after 10 seconds or be detonated manually (and can destroy Metroids).
Not going to lie, this was the mode I less understood many years ago, but now I think that it is a very cool twist on the idea, to the point that it could be more like a "game with Tetris blocks" rather than a "Tetris mode". Just don't forget that you can actually make the blocks drop faster here with the shoulder buttons to save time in the earlier levels.
Tetris DS is definitely a very all-rounded fun package, perfect for trips with your portable, with some few unique modes that play with Tetris with some extra rules (or in the case of Catch and Tower, new games that are Tetris themed). And if you can play this one with multiplayer, it is possible to activate items that can help you or hinder others on the fly; this is what made Tetris DS so fun to play with my friends many years ago.

Uno de los juegos que más me gustaba jugar cuando mi DS Lite estaba totalmente intacta y tenía un flashcart para acompañarla. Siempre me gustaron los juegos de Tetris desde que tuve Tetrisphere en la N64, pero el plus portátil que suponía Tetris DS sólo por el hecho de estar en la Nintendo DS, además de cómo esto permitía unas divertidas partidas multijugador hace muchos años con mis amigos de la universidad, y la variedad de modos de juego que ofrecía.
Los modos que puedes jugar son los siguientes
- Estándar: Jugar a Maratón, Line Clear o VS CPU. El modo principal es Maratón, en el que tienes que ir despejando líneas y ser progresivamente más rápido en el juego debido a la velocidad de caída de los bloques, pasando por varios motivos de juegos de NES en el camino. A las velocidades más rápidas, tendrás que recurrir al tiempo de indulgencia que te da la rotación de piezas aquí (así como superar los huecos con algunas piezas, si puedes), pero es genial llegar al final después de la carrera de pánico que son los últimos 5 niveles con su velocidad loca... y luego el tema clásico de Tetris dando una patada en el último tramo.
- Empuje: Un modo sólo para VS (no te preocupes, hay un modo VS CPU) en el que tienes que despejar dos o más líneas simultáneamente para empujar el campo flotante hacia el borde del lado del oponente... y evitar que el oponente lo empuje hacia tu borde. Es un poco difícil de entender por cómo empieza con dos piezas flotantes sobre las que tienes que empezar a colocar piezas (así como por cómo te ves obligado a hacer despejes de más de dos líneas... a menudo sin piezas porque aquí no puedes dejar caer nada sobre los agujeros, a no ser que haya un bloque que evite que se caiga) y por cómo las reglas pueden funcionar más o menos, pero puede ser entretenido cuando más o menos captas la idea.
Pero, por el amor de todo, no intentes jugar con la CPU Lv.5 en tu primer intento; incluso si eres bueno en el Tetris, seguro que las reglas te despistan lo suficiente mientras la IA se apila constantemente en las reglas del juego para mandarte a la esquina.
- Misión: Completa las misiones que te da el juego rápidamente o, de lo contrario, recibirás una penalización de bloques de basura por debajo de ti. En Maratón, las misiones empezarán a ser más difíciles a medida que sigas jugando, y el tiempo que tienes para completarlas será menor. En Contrarreloj, en cambio, hay un conjunto de misiones que tienes que completar tan rápido como puedas. Es bastante ingenioso en comparación con lo que se esperaba (Tetris con controles táctiles): El modo principal Tower te hace deslizar las piezas de izquierda a derecha y hacerlas girar (si hay espacio para que giren... y si no estás jugando al nivel 4 o 5) para despejar las líneas hasta que consigas bajar a un tipo de globo enjaulado al suelo para ganar.

La única forma de conseguir puntos y mantenerte a flote es hacer esas cuadrículas 4x4, que se volverán grises y explotarán a los 10 segundos o se detonarán manualmente (y pueden destruir Metroids).
No voy a mentir, este era el modo que menos entendía hace muchos años, pero ahora creo que es una vuelta de tuerca muy chula a la idea, hasta el punto de que podría ser más un "juego con bloques de Tetris" que un "modo Tetris". Eso sí, no olvides que aquí puedes hacer que los bloques caigan más rápido con los botones del hombro para ahorrar tiempo en los primeros niveles.
Definitivamente, Tetris DS es un paquete de diversión muy completo, perfecto para viajes con tu portátil, con algunos modos únicos que juegan con el Tetris con algunas reglas extra (o en el caso de Catch y Tower, nuevos juegos con temática de Tetris). Y si puedes jugar a éste con multijugador, es posible activar objetos que pueden ayudarte o entorpecer a los demás sobre la marcha; esto es lo que hacía tan divertido jugar al Tetris DS con mis amigos hace muchos años.
