Because if there's a game that, thinking about it for a second, would have a strong enough hook to get my brother to play it with me in Co-op, it would have to be a game about progressing through levels...while hundreds of enemies flood through and have to manage mowing down all of them for a chance of reaching the exit.
As Serious Sam is one of those shooters that spawned from the late 90s, it makes sense that it would carry its arena-shooter like arcadey roots proudly through every future game they made - and Serious Sam 3 could be said to be an attempt at adding some modern details to the classic gameplay, with the ability of running [that we didn't discover for a while assuming it just didn't have one] and aiming down certain guns...but most notably, with its gritty look that contrasted heavily with the cartoonishly colorful Serious Sam 2 that released before it.
With that said, the basics on understanding how to play this game will lead you in to how much insanity can happen in Serious Sam.
And apologies for the lack of proper screenshots in this one - for some reason OBS refused to record SS3 on my brother's PC no matter what I did, so as I couldn't record anything while we actually played, I instead used my phone to take a few screenshots whenever I wasn't in the middle of a firefight.
Needing Mr. Smith, Mr. Wesson, and a Rocket Launcher right now
Whenever alone or in co-op, the game starts with you having to face from the get go an one-eyed mutant (not the one pictured above - that's a boss...that eventually becomes a standard enemy later on) - letting you rip its eye out as the melee interaction, and then pick up a mace to go down a long staircase for starting the game proper.
When you reach the bottom, you'll soon have to use that mace a lot - as there will be many of those mutants you'll have to slam with it, although at least the mace DOES one-shot them as well as being raised ahead of time if there's enemies nearby. But you'll eventually find the basic pistol, which has Sam saying-
Mr. Smith. Mr. Wesson. Glad you could make it.
If you are playing SS3 [or any Serious Sam for that matter], then prepare to expect many, many more silly one liners like that.
That starting pistol will be your partner for the first two missions, only getting a shotgun during the second one, an assault rifle in the third one, and then eventually a rocket launcher in the fourth one. But the benefit of the basic pistol is that it has unlimited ammo [needs to be reloaded after 10 shots, but otherwise infinite] compared to every other weapon. Which can come handy for enemies that don't need too much to be disposed of if wanting to save ammo, or need more precise shots than what the shotgun can provide before you get the rifle.
But...of course you'll get plenty of reasons to use the new weapons you get as you not only start running into a larger variety of enemies per level, but also they start appearing at much larger amounts than ever.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Ahhhhhhhhh- Put a sock in it.
-Sam Stone after shooting down a Beheaded Kamikaze...right before a wave of them appears.
Well...what better way to start talking about the enemies themselves than bringing up THIS thing.
Teased cheekily in an early exchange between Sam and a soon to be dead NPC through the radio as you hear one of these scream [blowing up the NPC], the Beheaded Kamikaze will ALWAYS run at you while doing their iconic scream - so the moment you hear it nearby, you know you have to be ready to shoot it down before it blows you up point blank.
And on that note, while you see a few of those early on the first mission, the sequence I quoted above not only sums up the true danger of these in masses...but also sums up how the average Serious Sam scuffle goes like.
Uh oh.
-Sam Stone, right as that wave of enemies appears running at him.
In a way that's somehow reminscent of beat-em-ups for me, even the initial enemies can mean serious business if they are plentiful enough and get you cornered - like those one eyed mutants that could be an issue if there are so many around you that you don't have time to melee/mace them all before you die, the headless purple shirts that launch missile launchers, and trying to tackle a wave of Kamikaze eenmies head on rather than falling back to attempt lowering their numbers safely is a fool's errand.
Some enemies can be melee'd for a quicker if not instant kill, like the small red and medium blue scoripion/crab-like enemies...but then there's the Kleer Skeletons, which always try to leap at you when at close range, and if playing in Hard or Serious difficulty, they may as well be as dangerous as a Kamikaze due to their high damage - only that you'll only dodge them if you were sidestepping before they jump at you.
Although it CAN be satisfying to Melee them for an instakill after dodging them...just make sure there isn't a whole pack of them that can eat you up while you whoop a single one.
And for some reason they can later start throwing balls and chains at you.
At least any bosses you end up running into at the end of some levels have a visible healthbar, although in the case of the mutated chopper in No Place to Hide, you have to work around through a level full of turrets [most of which can be turned off, but you need to find those switches] to get where the boss is...and then get to pick up the Rocket Launcher while taking cover under any roofs so that it doesn't shoot you down on sight.
Two Rocket Launchers are better than one - as long as they are alive
And...here's where I can talk a bit more about why it has been an entertaining game to play with my brother in co-op, besides how surprisingly convenient it is to do.
Serious Sam 3 on consoles had support for split-screen, but unlike many other shooter games on PC [Halo, Borderlands, Call of Duty before BO3], it still supports split-screen natively in the PC version. And in a fairly nice way too, since beyond allowing for many splitscreen configurations if playing with 2-3 players, it lets you set specific gamepads to specific players...and even specific keyboard+mouse combos as well.
Basically, if your PC can run the game and got controllers or even spare KB+M combos available for a splitscreen session, you WILL be able to get it going.
But going back about the co-op experience, I see it as two phases you can be at.
The first one is engaging with the level design itself and working around closed areas, shooting down any armed enemies on sight nearby you and covering for your partners if getting attacked from a split path, as well as helping on reducing swarms of enemies.
It can definitely be cool to feel like you got your back covered when fighting enemies or getting to save someone from an enemy you see running at them, and it does feel like a nice sort of alternative to, say, COD Zombies, where you have to cooperate [or at the very minimum, keep yourself alive] in order to progress through the level.
And the other phase...is when you arrive at a open area or corridor. That is almost always guaranteed to mean that a LOT of enemies will come at you from there, sometimes even spawning in fropm thin air, and it will be a battle of attrition to not let any of those get too close to you.
Because if they do - especially if extremely dangerous enemies at close range like Kleer Skeletons or Beheaded Kamikazes are invited in that party, not only you can easily get caught off guard and killed...but also get killed again quickly if you can't run away from the pack as you are respawned nearby them - or even more unluckily, being spawned in the middle of them.
If you wonder why I'd describe a game like this, which you could assume that can be eventually cleared with enough time and resilience to respawn a trillion times if necessary, as a battle for survival, that's because the standard Co-op mode has you play with lives. So if all of you die too often, you'll eventually have to go back to the beginning of the stage, no matter how long it is.
There are also other co-op variants that let you customize this [Classic Co-op lets you play with infinite lives/respawns if you fancy], but playing the Standard Co-op mode and having to stay alive does add that layer of challenge my brother and I were looking for - which itself also gives a big purpose to the waves of enemies being tough to actually survive in some scenarios.
And it also lets you get extra lives - sometimes through getting enough points and sometimes through extra life pickups.
When you get really deep into some of those stages and are at your last life, hearing this little jingle from either way is definitely a small relief to know that, at least if the next fight goes south, you'll have one more chance to live through it.
And...what else there is to say?
We've been playing the game in Hard difficulty - at first we had started in Serious and survived the first mission after one or two attempts by playing smarter...until I insisted that the swarms of enemies in Serious were already getting really stupid in the second mission - and while my brother decided to then have us try out the third mission in Serious after beating the second one in Hard...he also came to the conclusion of Serious being seriously insane when we were quite far ahead at it only to get jumped by Kleer skeletons.
And that's not even talking about the difficulty after Serious - which is the same..except that enemies are practically invisible.
But yeah, even when Hard difficulty seemed like a fair step down at first, things still ramp up A LOT by the time you reach the fourth mission.
By this point, we are around the 9th or 10th mission - and the enemy waves have become noticeably relentless...either having to hold out for minutes to end a stage as you await for a rescue helicopter...or having to hold out for minutes just to progress through a single section of a huge map because it is so full of enemies you can't really run to the other side without dealing with those.
Or well, at least in almost all of them. The screenshot at the start is from the mission where you have to first infiltrate into a pyramid...and after a few deaths of trying to get there slowly by dealing with the nasty waves of enemies, I thought on trying to just book it as soon as possible through the leftmost side of the barren lands until we get to a gate, fetch a key and get in so that the huge horde of enemies eventually is left outside behind the door - and now we can focus on trying to plow through the hordes on the hallways.
And yes, you can see and hear the enemies that still try to run at you slightly clipping through the closed gate.
So that was a brief summary of what Serious Sam 3 provides at a general level - although there's always an occasional hint of variety, such as delving deep into dark tombs while you eventually run into space monkeys, having to run on a wide area to find a key that opens the door for four artifacts needed to open a door earlier on, and even having to use the C4 explosives weapon to deal with a giant Minotaur-like boss.
A lot of thrills, a lot of close shaves between extra lives gained and satisfactory victories against ferocious hordes...and the occasional yet very real frustration of getting jumped by multiple Kleer skeletons, bulls and many rocket-launching enemies forcing you to respawn...only to be respawned IN THE MIDDLE OF THEM AND DYING AGAIN.
This game can't be serious.
...
But if you want to beat this game [at least in Hard or more], YOU will have to be Serious.

Y sí, puedes ver y oír a los enemigos que aún intentan correr hacia ti atravesando ligeramente la puerta cerrada.
