You know, Bomberman is a franchise virtually known for the multiplayer aspect over anything else, and while some games have their single player campaigns, some cases like Bomberman Blast for the Wii and Atomic Bomberman only have the classic multiplayer battle mode.
While the few Arcade offerings from Bomberman would provide a simple campaign of levels with a no-brainer of supporting at least two players in it, most console Bomberman games didn't offer anything to play co-op aside from teaming up in Battle mode.
...Which makes Super Bomberman quite the fun exception. The classic battle experience is included, but the Normal mode is an arcade-style level by level campaign.
And it lets a second player to tag along with you!!
This is how I ended up playing this game with my little nephew that visited me and had many laughs with this challenge. And for those curious, I recorded the whole journey here...though it is not edited at all (yet?), so it is pretty much a whole hour of Super Bomberman gameplay.
If you want an abridged version, though...
A combo of years of experience...and a small boy with common sense
For starters, Bomberman is definitely one of the easiest games to get people to play with, specially children, due to the very basic gameplay it embodies: At most you simply move in 4 directions and place bombs, which should be obvious that its flames will engulf anything (include you) in their way.
When power-ups are thrown into the mix, in the right hands it makes for quite the power in your arsenal, like having the Bomb Kick (as kicking bombs to an enemy will already cause them damage, but also helps for damage from a distance) and the Detonator (place them and blow them up whenever you want...so you can pull the trigger when they are at range rather than hoping you timed the bomb well and they happen to come to it)
However, when you have a little boy wanting to try these out for the first time, it can get sort of funny. Twice he wanted me to leave the Bomb Kick powerup to him, and the first time he misunderstood the instructions ("You have to hit it from the side"...but he stood still on top of the bomb), while the second time he did get it right a few times but forgot to kick the bomb the last time.
The detonator, if my memory serves me right...he basically used it at point blank of himself when I told him what it could do.
With all that said though, it was all still fun with how this game doesn't have limited continues, and even funnier than all those mishaps from him, were my own mishaps. Accidentally trapping myself with bombs a few times (including one time where I trapped myself with a detonator, and he almost rescued me...only to accidentally leave a bomb right in front of it to guarantee my demise), getting caught by my own flames due to looking out for him or running away from a quick enemy, and that I somehow died in the first boss...which resulted in my nephew fighting it back with his last life until he defeated it!
At least I could pay that back to him in the second world with that weird sun where he died first so I had to finish off that thing myself.
Not so Friendly Fire
The one thing that can actively hinder you in co-op and yet make for some fun y moments...is friendly fire. And while that is a given if playing team battles in Bomberman, here it is far more funny to see with how you could be aiming to blast an enemy, only to catch your partner that was nearby if they weren't paying attention.
And that sounds simple, but sometimes if both of you are stuck nearby an enemy approaching, it might end up in this...or in burning the goal. And there's a reason why you don't want that to happen.
Don't burn the goal or else
You have to find the exit to finish the stage after clearing all enemies...but if you bomb the exit, another enemy will spawn.
This can also happen if a walking bomb enemy decides to explode nearby it, which means they can basically spawn more of themselves if they decide to do so. Though in the screenshot below, it actually was my bomb thrown over there (tried to get the one on the right which was a detonating bomb enemy)...and it happened to land in front of the goal, spawning the one you see there floating.
This was something that I first remembered that happened when I accidentally spawned one enemy in one of the first stages after having already cleared the rest, but then amusingly was something that my nephew wanted me to demonstrate...and right after I did that we both died to that freshly-spawned enemy.
And speaking of enemies...
Beware the creatures
You'll stumble with many different looking enemies...but what will make them stand out is the way they act in particular. Some take two or more hits to be destroyed, some move pretty fast, some move over blocks, and there's even this blue one-eyed Pac-Man looking thing that eats bombs in the way (unless you kick the bombs to it; that still causes normal damage to it).
But if there's one that strikes immediate fear of all of them...it has to be the coin.
This thing moves fast and over blocks, so it can end up getting near you anywhere filled with soft blocks. If those are on the level, then make sure to clean it quickly to have ways to escape (or if possible, have yourself the powerup to run over blocks too) and get out of the corner before it gets to you...or better yet, the detonator so that you can snipe them from far away
Screw the rules, I got invulnerability
A thing that I also remembered while playing was that you could do a little trick of repeatedly placing bombs while being invulnerable to cause a trail of chain explosions...thanks to that my nephew accidentally did that with his bombs at one point.
The one moment where I decided to go ham with it though was with a particular boss that had caught us off-guard: The 4th world boss.
Unlike the previous 3, you have to hit it with your bombs not to drain the health, but to slam it into an electric wall that will do the damage for you...but unless you have a detonator, it can be annoying to time the explosions so that he does.
And I used to have one at hand...
Which I lost to my own explosion, as I didn't see I was too close to one of my own bombs.
Whenever you have to continue in a boss fight after losing all your lives, you are taken to the previous stage, so imagine that after having that happen, losing all our extra lives in said stage to then go back at that one fight.
In the third try, I decided that enough is enough...and pulled up the magic trick against it. Costed me my two extra lives and accidentally taking my nephew with me both times...but I took him down.
An unceremoniously early ending...
By that point, he told me he wanted to try another thing because "it was too hard", not in an angry tone (he's a good boy) but clearly wanting to play something else after that much Bomberman, and that's how the run ended after getting to the first stage in the fifth world...which was straight up a series of fights against evil robot Bomberman.
...Which is basically fighting against the AI in Battle mode, only that the arena has no blocks to take cover or powerups from, so you can only count in any previous upgades you carry from past levels and whatever gets dropped when you defeat one of them.
However, despite not having concluded that playthrough to the very end with him (though at least the password remains to hop in on my own or with him whenever possible), it still was a lot of fun to go through that much of this game after a good while of being nowhere near a single-player Bomberman campaign in months (if not years); specially thanks to my little nephew being there to have me act sillier than usual when playing, laughing at his moves when messing up or in disbelief from him somehow getting his bombs very luckily timed to blow up a fast enemy (he got quite a few of those if you would believe it) and screaming with whenever I was stuck myself on a stupid pinch moment.
Oh, and there's quite a few things I tried with him after this, so might want to be ready and expect new Web Browser Shenianigans ;)

Ya sabes, Bomberman es una franquicia prácticamente conocida por el aspecto multijugador por encima de cualquier otra cosa, y mientras que algunos juegos tienen sus campañas para un jugador, algunos casos como Bomberman Blast para la Wii y Atomic Bomberman sólo tienen el clásico modo de batalla multijugador.
Mientras que las pocas propuestas Arcade de Bomberman ofrecían una sencilla campaña de niveles con la obviedad de admitir al menos dos jugadores en ella, la mayoría de los juegos de Bomberman para consola no ofrecían nada para jugar en cooperativo aparte de formar equipo en el modo Batalla.
...Lo que convierte a Super Bomberman en una divertida excepción. Incluye la experiencia de batalla clásica, pero el modo Normal es una campaña por niveles al estilo arcade.

Así acabé jugando a este juego con mi sobrinito que me visitó y nos reímos mucho con este reto. Y para los curiosos, grabé todo el viaje aquí... aunque no está editado en absoluto (todavía?), así que es más o menos una hora entera de juego de Super Bomberman.

Un combo de años de experiencia... y un niño pequeño con sentido común
Para empezar, Bomberman es sin duda uno de los juegos más fáciles de conseguir que la gente juegue, especialmente los niños, debido a la jugabilidad tan básica que encarna: Como mucho, te limitas a moverte en 4 direcciones y colocar bombas, con lo que debería ser obvio que sus llamas engullirán cualquier cosa (incluido tú) que se interponga en su camino.
Cuando se añaden potenciadores a la mezcla, en las manos adecuadas se convierte en todo un arsenal, como tener la Patada Bomba (ya que patear bombas a un enemigo ya le causa daño, pero también ayuda a dañar a distancia) y el Detonador (para colocarlas y hacerlas explotar cuando quieras... así puedes apretar el gatillo cuando estén a tiro en lugar de esperar a que hayas calculado bien el tiempo de la bomba y se acerquen por casualidad).
Sin embargo, cuando tienes a un niño pequeño que quiere probarlas por primera vez, la cosa puede ponerse divertida. Dos veces quiso que le dejara el potenciador de la patada a la bomba, y la primera vez entendió mal las instrucciones ("Tienes que golpearla desde un lado"... pero él se quedó quieto encima de la bomba), mientras que la segunda vez sí lo hizo bien unas cuantas veces, pero se olvidó de patear la bomba la última vez.
El detonador, si no me falla la memoria... básicamente lo usó a quemarropa de él mismo cuando le dije lo que podía hacer.
Dicho todo esto, fue divertido ver cómo este juego no tiene continuaciones limitadas, y aún más divertido que todos esos percances suyos, fueron mis propios percances. Atraparme accidentalmente con bombas unas cuantas veces (incluyendo una en la que me atrapé con un detonador, y él casi me rescata... sólo para dejar accidentalmente una bomba justo delante de él y garantizar mi muerte), ser atrapado por mis propias llamas debido a estar pendiente de él o huir de un enemigo rápido, y que de alguna manera morí en el primer jefe... ¡lo que resultó en que mi sobrino luchara contra él con su última vida hasta derrotarlo!
Al menos pude devolvérselo en el segundo mundo con ese sol raro en el que él murió primero así que tuve que acabar con esa cosa yo mismo.
Not so Friendly Fire
Lo único que puede ser un obstáculo en el modo cooperativo y, sin embargo, dar lugar a momentos divertidos... es el fuego amigo. Y mientras que en Bomberman es algo obvio si juegas en batallas por equipos, aquí es mucho más divertido ver cómo puedes estar apuntando a un enemigo con el objetivo de destruirlo, y luego alcanzar a tu compañero que estaba cerca si no estaba prestando atención.
Y eso suena simple, pero a veces si ambos estáis atascados cerca de un enemigo que se acerca, puede acabar en esto... o en quemar la portería. Y hay una razón por la que no quieres que eso ocurra.
No quemes la meta o de lo contrario
Tienes que encontrar la salida para terminar la fase después de eliminar a todos los enemigos... pero si bombardeas la salida, aparecerá otro enemigo.
Esto también puede ocurrir si un enemigo bomba andante decide explotar cerca de ella, lo que significa que básicamente puede engendrar más de sí mismo si decide hacerlo. Aunque en la captura de pantalla de abajo, en realidad fue mi bomba lanzada allí (intenté coger la de la derecha, que era un enemigo bomba detonante)... y resultó que aterrizó delante de la meta, generando el enemigo que ves flotando.
Esto fue algo que recordé por primera vez que ocurrió cuando accidentalmente apareció un enemigo en una de las primeras fases después de haber superado el resto, pero luego fue algo divertido que mi sobrino quería que le demostrara... y justo después de que lo hiciera ambos morimos a manos de ese enemigo recién aparecido.
Y hablando de enemigos...
Cuidado con las criaturas
Tropezarás con muchos enemigos de aspecto diferente... pero lo que les hará destacar es su forma de actuar en particular. Algunos necesitan dos o más golpes para ser destruidos, otros se mueven bastante rápido, otros se mueven por encima de los bloques, e incluso hay una cosa azul con aspecto de Pac-Man de un solo ojo que se come las bombas que encuentra en su camino (a menos que le des una patada a las bombas; eso le sigue causando el daño normal).
Pero si hay uno que infunde miedo inmediato de todos ellos... tiene que ser la moneda.
Esta cosa se mueve rápido y por encima de los bloques, así que puede acabar acercándose a cualquier lugar lleno de bloques blandos. Si los hay en el nivel, asegúrate de limpiarlo rápidamente para tener formas de escapar (o si es posible, ten también el potenciador para correr sobre los bloques) y sal de la esquina antes de que te alcance... o mejor aún, el detonador para poder dispararles desde lejos.
Que se pudran las reglas, tengo invulnerabilidad
Una cosa que también recordé mientras jugaba era que podías hacer un pequeño truco de colocar bombas repetidamente siendo invulnerable para provocar una estela de explosiones en cadena... gracias a eso mi sobrino hizo eso accidentalmente con sus bombas en un momento dado.
El único momento en el que decidí ir a por todas fue con un jefe en particular que nos había pillado desprevenidos: El jefe del 4to mundo.
A diferencia de los 3 anteriores, tienes que golpearlo con tus bombas no para drenarle la salud, sino para estrellarlo contra una pared eléctrica que hará el daño por ti... pero a menos que tengas un detonador, puede ser molesto cronometrar las explosiones para que lo haga.
Y yo solía tener uno a mano...
que perdí por mi propia explosión, ya que no vi que estaba demasiado cerca de una de mis propias bombas.
Cada vez que tienes que continuar en una pelea contra un jefe después de perder todas tus vidas, te llevan a la fase anterior, así que imagínate que después de pasar eso, perder todas nuestras vidas extra en dicha fase para luego volver a esa única pelea.
En el tercer intento, decidí que ya era suficiente... y tiré del truco de magia contra él. Me costó mis dos vidas extra y llevarme accidentalmente a mi sobrino las dos veces...pero lo derribé.
An unceremoniously early ending...
Llegados a este punto, me dijo que quería probar otra cosa porque "era demasiado difícil", no en tono enfadado (es un buen chico) sino claramente queriendo jugar a otra cosa después de tanto Bomberman, y así fue como terminó la carrera tras llegar a la primera fase del quinto mundo... que era directamente una serie de combates contra el malvado robot Bomberman.
...Que básicamente es luchar contra la IA en modo Batalla, sólo que la arena no tiene bloques para cubrirse ni potenciadores, así que sólo puedes contar con los potenciadores que lleves de niveles anteriores y lo que te suelten cuando derrotes a uno de ellos.
Sin embargo, a pesar de no haber concluido ese playthrough hasta el final con él (aunque al menos me queda la contraseña para saltar por mi cuenta o con él siempre que sea posible), siguió siendo muy divertido recorrer tanto de este juego después de un buen rato sin acercarme a una campaña de Bomberman para un solo jugador en meses (si no años); Especialmente gracias a mi sobrinito, que me hacía el tonto cuando jugaba, riéndome de sus movimientos cuando metía la pata o con la incredulidad de que, de alguna manera, conseguía que sus bombas explotaran a un enemigo rápido (consiguió bastantes de esos si os lo creéis) y gritando cada vez que yo mismo me quedaba atascado en un momento de pellizco estúpido.
Oh, y hay bastantes cosas que probé con él después de esto, así que puede que quieras estar preparado y esperar nuevas Shenianigans del navegador web ;)
