Yes, another racing game on my hands [and another kart racer]. Sometimes I end up feeling like wanting to try a very specific kind of variety regarding games.
Now, for starters, the reason why I picked up the game recently was to try out the co-op adventure mode with a friend that had visited me. But later on I eventually decided to start the game again on my own - which is why we're back here.
Boosting ahead when you already know the strats
Here's the kicker: I have beaten this game before.
Some years ago, and I don't remember exactly in which one, but I remember having gone through almost all of the Adventure mode in co-op mode and then finishing the fifth world of the game on my own. So...while it had been a good while since the last time I played DKR, I already had some key strats on my belt to cruise through almost all of the normal races the game offers.
The most basic and yet important one is that letting go of the accelerator before boosting, whether using a boost item or running over a zipper/boost panel will give you a stronger boost. That alone lets you rocket away from the AI in the first time you visit each world due to how fast you go compared to them.
If you are racing on a car, you can also tap repeatedly the A button to increase slightly your max speed - most noticeably when doing drifts [and have the speedometer visible], and is a known quirk to players that speedrun or time attack the game...but you could say that it's overkill to use in a casual playthrough. And yet, I did 😂
What does the Adventure entail
To not fill up much of this with a summary of how the game basically plays along, the gist is that the hub world lets you access to four worlds with races locked by a set amount of balloons. You get balloons from those races, but there are also a few hidden in the hub world and three that Taj the Genie can give you if you win his challenges whenever he appears with one.
With that said, the highlights of the game's challenge are at the Boss Challenges and Silver Coin Challenges - which can be accessed once you finish all four races in a world.
But I'll talk about the Silver Coin challenges first as the Bosses are more interesting in their second version that's unlocked after those.
Now you have a reason to go another route
The Silver Coin challenges are a neat idea that force you to think more on just going for the raw speed, as you ahve to pick up all coins before winning the race in first place. And while they are simple in most tracks, there are some of them where you have to keep an eye on the surroundings so that you don't miss a few coins quite away from the usual path.
While you have to do three runs total per track when counting the first race, the silver coins AND the Trophy Race which makes you do all four races of the world in a GP format [although the AI is more competent in Trophy Race], the Silver Coins at least add a slice of variety and a bit of a more unconventional challenge rather than just redoing a race yet again with higher difficulty.
Random chance to mention that I got this funny clipping moment into the floor when I was doing Haunted Woods Silver Coins due to slipping over a piece of geometry that can sometimes do that lol [TIPTUP DO A KICKFLIP]
Some tracks are fairly fast to get all the silver coins in a single lap, while others may force you to keep an eye on your surroundings to not miss a coin in the usual path...or even slow down to see if there's any sitting on a corner you usually wouldn't cross in a normal race.
Those big guys are big cheaters
Now, talking about the Boss Challenges, the first variant gives you an idea of what you're facing: A giant animal that will run ahead of you on a special track and usually you wouldn't be able to outrun. But there are items in the track, so those will be your key to victory in that situation.
If you use the boosters to propel ahead out of the giant bosses, slap them with missiles so that they slow down and fall behind, or a mix of both, they can be defeated.
It is interesting how the Dino Domain boss already sets up a decent challenge when the spiral uphill gets thinner and thinner the closer you get to the goal, so you have to also make sure to not fall off.
The giant walrus though is much trickier - normally it is possible to keep at bay in the icy course with the missiles you get and using boosters to shorten the gap. But in the rematch against it after you get all Snowflake Mountain's silver coins, you NEED to get yourself a big batch of missiles if you even want to stop him long enough before gets to the goal, as it otherwise jumps ahead early at the start and doesn't seem to be possible to outrun it without being aggressive.
On the flipside, the Sherbet Island boss was surprisingly tame compared to that. It was a three lap race in the hovercraft, but aside from having the weapons available to easily make him fall behind, the octopus itself only really had the initial start and dropping hazards behind it to be a threat. But if you got a way to get ahead of him, then he will comfortably stay behind as long as you drive well.
Finally, the Dragon Forest boss has you race against a dragon that spits fireballs that get in the way, but if you can dodge those consistently, it is only a matter of either attacking the dragon with missiles to slow it down, or be creative with where you use your boosters as well as following a good line on the track, as it IS possible to catch up near the end without items to overtake with a big boost right at the finish line.
The Battle Challenges
Finding a key in each world will open that world's battle challenge, which is essentially playing that world's battle mode stage against the AI and win in order to get a piece of the T.T. Amulet.
If there was something that was a very funny highlight from that small co-op session I mentioned at the start, that was the Fire Mountain challenge:
Whoever hatches three eggs into their place wins.
You can steal eggs from the other players while they are hatching...so you'd have to be vigiliant so that they don't steal any you try to hatch yourself while the other computers are trying to do the same - as of course, if any of them win, you lose.
However, that is why it was a funny challenge to have my friend stock up eggs on his spot while both of us were trying to fend off the bots with homing missiles until he got to hatch up three eggs.
To save a repeat mention of this later on, doing it alone was also doable although I had to instead always have a homing missile ready when picking up and dropping an egg as there always was one bot ready to try and steal it, but otherwise was the same experience.
It's funny how Fire Mountain had this particular challenge going for it with the Plane, but Icicle Pyramid and Darkwater Beach [why does that sound cool for a battle stage] are essentially the classic Mario Kart battle mode challenges, having to KO the other racers in an arena with items.
But hey, even that is cool in retrospective when neither Mario Kart 64 nor Crash Team Racing at the time had any support for Battle mode bots. It's not that they are too bright in those battle maps specifically [they were far more annoying at Fire Mountain]...but they are there.
The last Battle Stage, Smokey Castle, isn't even a battle per se but more so searching for bananas to save in your treasure chest while others may try to interfere or finish before you. May be more engaging with actual players, but this one wasn't as challenging as Fire Mountain nor as interesting at the other two battle stages in my opinion, even though it is an unique idea for one.
You may think that these are optional and not something to worry about. And well, for a short while, you may be right. But I'll get to that later.
Stuff that happened before the finale
First, I want to say that Pirate Lagoon's music never fails to put a stupid smile on my face. It's just...I don't know how to put it into words, but you definitely get such a funny but jolly vibe from the song when you listen to it. And it's in Treasure Caves, too.
Anyways, I was also doing the Time Trial races in Dino Domain and Snowflake Mountain, as getting a fast time in a track would unlock a T.T. ghost. That was since beating the T.T. ghosts of ALL tracks can unlock T.T. himself as a racer, but I still haven't gone and done that for the rest of tracks.
I bring it up because I accidentally got caught up for 30 minutes trying to grind a developer time in one of the tracks, Frosty Village, after getting the dev times for Everfrost Peak and Walrus Cove down by accient. As there were RetroAchievements for said dev times [which I just discovered are shown at the second credits roll], I buckled down to get the Frosty Village one done with Tiptup.
Again, took me a while to both figure out a path to victory and execute everything properly to get the time I wanted, but I got it.
Okay, now time for the finale.
Wizpig: A nightmare for kids
Let's put aside that this is a giant evil wizard pig that has this evil laugh when you unlock the boss race against him and see that he's enormous, he's pretty tough to beat.
At least if you don't practice for at least a few minutes in his race and not only already know the [let go of accel before a boost] strat to apply it every single time, but also know the track enough to remember where each booster is and hit every single one with the trick to be able to propel ahead of Wizpig.
If you don't do that, you aren't winning. Because the big guy is already fast enough and can stomp over you if you let him, but trying to outrun him without using the boosters at their best is basically a fool's errand. And that's why there had been stories of many that, when they were kids, couldn't beat this guy at all.
Sure, Taj can hint you to the booster strat after the Snowflake Mountain boss...but unless you happened to read that and understand it [or already knew of the strat, whether someone told you or searched it on your own], chances are that most kids wouldn't even know of a little trick that would be essential to beat the game's final challenge.
...Or is it?
See, if you got every Trophy Race done up to that point, approaching a signpost with your obtained trophies makes the lighthouse turn into a rocket to go to Future Fun Land, the true final area of the game - and somewhat shorter to go through too as there's no Boss Challenges before the Silver Coin challenges in this case.
...But if you don't have all 39 balloons by that point, including the hidden ones at the hub world, you won't be able to play in any of the races until you get them - as the first race is locked behind those 39 balloons.
Oh, and if you didn't find the keys to do the four Battle challenges to get all four pieces of the T.T. Amulet, you can't do the fight either. So yeah, if you want to save yourself some backtracking, do all what you can in those four worlds before you do the big jump into space.
Once you have everything in hand though, it's time to beat Wizpig in Space.
The track may be more hazardous, with many obstacles to dodge with the plane and even a room full of laser shots filling the lower area, funnily enough it is an easier race to get down with less time as you aren't reliant on hitting boosts consistently on a car, but rather take good lines on a plane and either overtake with boost items or attack Wizpig with missiles.
Because yeah, unlike the first Wizpig fight, the balloons are back to help you on this one.
Conclusion
Wizpig crashes into a planet and explodes!
Tiptup and the gang can finally celebrate victory for good!
The credits have Crescent Island music now!!
You've unlocked Adventure Two!
...wait.
...Adventure...Two?
Yuh-huh. This one goes for those that thought DKR may have been too easy on a first time visit: It's the entirety of Adventure mode again...but mirrored.
Except the Silver Coins are now re-arranged and the AI is noticeably harder than before on those to boot. Good luck on still getting first place on those.
Well, guess I'll see you later in Adventure Two if I do get around it soon, instead of targeting yet another random game or returning to Mario Kart DS.

La más básica e importante es que soltar el acelerador antes de acelerar, ya sea usando un objeto de aceleración o pasando por encima de una cremallera/panel de aceleración te dará un impulso más fuerte. Sólo eso ya te permite alejarte de la IA en la primera vez que visitas cada mundo debido a lo rápido que vas en comparación con ellos.
Si corres en un coche, también puedes pulsar repetidamente el botón A para aumentar ligeramente tu velocidad máxima, sobre todo al derrapar [y tener el velocÃmetro visible], y es una peculiaridad conocida por los jugadores que hacen speedrun o contrarreloj... pero podrÃa decirse que es exagerado usarlo en una partida casual. Y, sin embargo, lo hice 😂.
En qué consiste la aventura
Para no llenar mucho esto con un resumen de cómo se desarrolla básicamente el juego, lo esencial es que el mundo central te permite acceder a cuatro mundos con razas bloqueadas por una cantidad determinada de globos. Consigues globos de esas carreras, pero también hay algunos escondidos en el mundo central y tres que Taj el Genio puede darte si ganas sus desafÃos cada vez que aparece con uno.
Dicho esto, lo más destacado de los desafÃos del juego está en los DesafÃos de jefes y los DesafÃos de monedas de plata, a los que puedes acceder una vez que terminas las cuatro carreras de un mundo.
Pero hablaré primero de los desafÃos Moneda de Plata, ya que los Jefes son más interesantes en su segunda versión, que se desbloquea después de estos.
Ahora tienes una razón para ir por otra ruta
Los desafÃos Silver Coin son una buena idea que te obligan a pensar más en la velocidad bruta, ya que tienes que recoger todas las monedas antes de ganar la carrera en primer lugar. Y aunque son sencillos en la mayorÃa de los circuitos, hay algunos en los que tienes que estar atento a los alrededores para que no se te escapen algunas monedas bastante alejadas del camino habitual.

Ahora, hablando de los DesafÃos de Jefes, la primera variante te da una idea de a qué te enfrentas: Un animal gigante que correrá delante de ti por una pista especial y al que normalmente no podrÃas dejar atrás. Pero hay objetos en la pista, asà que esos serán tu clave para la victoria en esa situación.
Si usas los potenciadores para propulsarte por delante de los jefes gigantes, los golpeas con misiles para que reduzcan su velocidad y se queden atrás, o una mezcla de ambas cosas, podrás derrotarlos.
Es interesante cómo el jefe Dino Domain ya plantea un reto decente cuando la espiral cuesta arriba se hace cada vez más fina cuanto más te acercas a la meta, asà que también tienes que asegurarte de no caerte.
Sin embargo, la morsa gigante es mucho más complicada: normalmente es posible mantenerla a raya en el recorrido helado con los misiles que consigues y usando potenciadores para acortar distancias. Pero en la revancha contra ella después de conseguir todas las monedas de plata de la Montaña de los Copos de Nieve, NECESITAS** hacerte con un buen lote de misiles si quieres detenerla el tiempo suficiente antes de que llegue a la meta, ya que de lo contrario se adelanta pronto al principio y no parece posible dejarla atrás sin ser agresivo.
Por otro lado, el jefe de la isla de los sorbetes fue sorprendentemente manso en comparación con este. Era una carrera de tres vueltas en el aerodeslizador, pero aparte de tener las armas disponibles para hacerle retroceder fácilmente, el pulpo en sà solo tenÃa realmente el arranque inicial y los peligros de caÃda detrás para ser una amenaza. Pero si consigues adelantarle, se quedará atrás cómodamente mientras conduzcas bien.
Por último, el jefe del Bosque del Dragón te enfrenta a un dragón que escupe bolas de fuego que se interponen en tu camino, pero si puedes esquivarlas de forma consistente, solo es cuestión de atacar al dragón con misiles para ralentizarlo, o ser creativo con el uso de los potenciadores y seguir una buena lÃnea en la pista, ya que ES posible alcanzarlo cerca del final sin elementos para adelantarlo con un gran impulso justo en la lÃnea de meta.
DesafÃos de batalla
Encontrar una llave en cada mundo abrirá el desafÃo de batalla de ese mundo, que consiste básicamente en jugar la fase del modo batalla de ese mundo contra la IA y ganar para conseguir una pieza del amuleto T.T..
Si hubo algo muy divertido en la pequeña sesión cooperativa que mencioné al principio fue el desafÃo de la Montaña de Fuego:
Quien incube tres huevos en su propio puesto, gana.
Puedes robar huevos a los otros jugadores mientras están eclosionando... asà que tendrÃas que estar vigilante para que no te roben ninguno que intentes eclosionar tú mientras los otros equipos intentan hacer lo mismo -ya que, por supuesto, si alguno de ellos gana, tú pierdes.
Sin embargo, por eso fue un reto divertido hacer que mi amigo acumulara huevos en su sitio mientras los dos intentábamos defendernos de los robots con misiles guiados hasta que consiguió eclosionar tres huevos.
Para no tener que repetir esto más adelante, hacerlo solo también era posible, aunque tenÃa que tener siempre preparado un misil guiado al recoger y soltar un huevo, ya que siempre habÃa un robot dispuesto a intentar robarlo, pero por lo demás era la misma experiencia.
Es curioso que la Montaña de Fuego tuviera este desafÃo particular con el Avión, pero la Pirámide de Carámbanos y la Playa de Aguas Oscuras [por qué suena tan bien para un escenario de batalla] son básicamente los desafÃos clásicos del modo batalla de Mario Kart, teniendo que derrotar a los otros corredores en una arena con objetos.

En primer lugar, quiero decir que la música de Pirate Lagoon nunca deja de poner una estúpida sonrisa en mi cara. Es que... no sé cómo expresarlo con palabras, pero la canción te transmite una sensación divertida y alegre cuando la escuchas. *Y también está en Treasure Caves.
De todos modos, también participaba en las carreras contrarreloj de Dino Domain y Snowflake Mountain, ya que al conseguir un tiempo rápido en una pista se desbloqueaba un fantasma T.T.. Eso fue porque al vencer a los fantasmas de T.T. en TODAS las pistas se puede desbloquear al propio T.T. como corredor, pero aún no lo he hecho en el resto de pistas.
Lo digo porque accidentalmente me quedé atrapado durante 30 minutos tratando de conseguir un tiempo de desarrollo en una de las pistas, Frosty Village, después de conseguir los tiempos de desarrollo de Everfrost Peak y Walrus Cove por accidente. Como habÃa RetroAchievements para dichos tiempos de desarrollo [que acabo de descubrir que se muestran en la segunda parte de los créditos], me puse manos a la obra para conseguir el de Frosty Village con Tiptup.
De nuevo, me llevó un rato encontrar el camino a la victoria y ejecutarlo todo correctamente para conseguir el tiempo que querÃa, pero lo conseguÃ.
Bueno, ahora es el momento para el final.
Wizpig: Una pesadilla para los niños
Dejemos a un lado que se trata de un cerdo mago gigante malvado que tiene esa risa malvada cuando desbloqueas la carrera de jefe contra él y ves que es enorme, es bastante difÃcil de vencer.
Al menos si no practicas durante al menos unos minutos en su carrera y no solo conoces ya la estrategia [suelta el acelerador antes de un impulso] para aplicarla cada vez, sino que también conoces la pista lo suficiente como para recordar dónde está cada impulso y golpear cada uno de ellos con el truco para poder propulsarte por delante de Wizpig.
Si no haces eso, no estás ganando, porque el grandullón ya es lo bastante rápido y puede pisotearte si se lo permites, pero intentar dejarlo atrás sin usar los potenciadores al máximo es básicamente una misión inútil. Y por eso ha habido historias de muchos que, cuando eran niños, no podÃan vencer a este tipo en absoluto.
Claro, Taj puede indicarte la estrategia de refuerzo tras el jefe de la Montaña de los Copos de Nieve... pero a menos que la leas y la entiendas [o ya la conozcas, tanto si te la han dicho como si la has buscado por tu cuenta], lo más probable es que la mayorÃa de los niños ni siquiera conozcan un pequeño truco que serÃa esencial para superar el desafÃo final del juego.
...¿O no?
Verás, si has superado todas las carreras de trofeos hasta ese momento, al acercarte a un poste indicador con los trofeos obtenidos, el faro se convierte en un cohete para ir a la Tierra de la Diversión Futura, la verdadera zona final del juego, y también algo más corta de recorrer, ya que en este caso no hay desafÃos de jefe antes de los desafÃos de monedas de plata.
...Pero si no tienes los 39 globos en ese momento, incluidos los ocultos en el mundo central, no podrás jugar en ninguna de las carreras hasta que los consigas, ya que la primera carrera está bloqueada tras esos 39 globos.

Puede que la pista sea más peligrosa, con muchos obstáculos que esquivar con el avión e incluso una sala llena de disparos láser en la zona inferior, pero, curiosamente, es una carrera más fácil de superar en menos tiempo, ya que no dependes de los propulsores del coche, sino de tomar buenas trazadas con el avión y adelantar con potenciadores o atacar a Wizpig con misiles.
Porque sÃ, a diferencia del primer combate contra Wizpig, los globos vuelven a ayudarte en este.

Asà es. Este va para aquellos que pensaron que DKR podrÃa haber sido demasiado fácil en una primera visita: Es todo el modo Aventura de nuevo... pero reflejado.
Excepto que las Monedas de Plata están ahora reorganizadas y la IA es notablemente más difÃcil que antes en ellas.
Bueno, supongo que nos veremos más tarde en Aventura 2, si es que lo consigo pronto, en lugar de dedicarme a otro juego aleatorio o volver a Mario Kart DS.
Y si os estáis preguntando dónde están mis vÃdeos habituales en los que juego al juego... En realidad acabé recopilando todo el material de mi playthrough en una sola lista de reproducción debido a que ya estaba todo el juego grabado en ese momento 😅.
Por lo menos tienen marca de tiempo, por si tienes curiosidad por ver cómo me enfrenté a cada carrera... y saltarte cuando me quedé atascado en alguno de esos Boss Challenges :p
