Well, this game sure has more meat on the bones than Banana Blitz HD, not only in the first impressions on the level design department, but more so in the things it adds to give you a reason to replay levels on top of messing with the spindash.
Besides the suspicious Banana Mania shaped hole that I'll have to fill later with my thoughts about that game, which I definitely have to let marinate because I'm NOT someone who sees it as a blight to the old Monkey Ball games BUT I also see how it got that rep with some of the diehard players due to the changes to the controls, should be mostly inconsequential to talk about Banana Rumble...
...Aside from how the game was apparently succesful enough to have this new game produced, the first fully original Super Monkey Ball game since Banana Splitz on the PS Vita. Oddly enough, it is currently a Nintendo Switch exclusive, but maybe on its first or second anniversary it will be made multiplatform.
Back to jumping the old style by hitting bumps
As Banana Rumble does away with the jump that was built in Banana Blitz HD [and was also included in Banana Mania but as an unlockable toggle], it instead adds a Spin Dash mechanic that can be used to build up speed and dash at once, exemplified in the first tutorial to be useful with ramp jumps.
However, this also means that you can basically charge a burst of speed anywhere you want to take it...and like the old games often allowed you to do, running into bumps could let you take flight without a jump button, allowing for shortcuts you usually wouldn't get if trying to play the level normally, but was also integrated as an intended way to get around in some old Super Monkey Ball levels [like the SMB1 Expert floors Destruction and SEGA, where there are gaps that require you to run over them and control your landing after the bump jumps].
The developers clearly intended you to have fun breaking some levels with it, as a few of them have some very funny jumps you can hit thanks to the spin dash...and a handful of those have time challenges that clearly require you to use that strat, but more on that later.
But yeah, that's one quirk you can use to have fun with deceptively simple looking stages, although the Spin Dash itself is already a tool to speed up things in those as well, and the level design outside of that actually often lends itself well to playing it classic style whenever needed [tightropes and bumpers to avoid], or on the flipside, having some clear way to do skips through the spin dash.
Like with this stage and specific hole that you can spindash into to bump jump - with the right angle, you'll get launched mid-air into the tightrope and can finish with a few seconds to spare below the time challenge.
And you may be wondering what incentive you could have to try for those if you want to play through the game chill and casually? Well, as you will see, this game shows what its made for when you pause or complete a level and see challenges to fulfill, which I feel was a very good move on the developers part to give players replay value on revisiting levels - even the ones you may not think much about otherwise.
Race to the finish, get the bananas, and don't miss the golden banana
The three missions in every level are the following:
- Beat the level under a certain time limit
- Beat the level with a set amount of bananas
- Beat the level with the Golden Banana collected
And those three things alone add A LOT of reason to replay levels in all ways, although I'd recommend you to go for the time challenge separate from the banana and golden banana ones, or even all three separate from each other when you get to the more complex levels.
The banana challenge seems simple at first: Gives you a reason to pick up all bananas when the game doesn't have a lives system to make you go for them and get 1-Ups, but also comes at play in stages that look lengthy AND have a ton of bananas...which in that case you may end up being grateful that the main banana challenge is almost always getting most, not all bananas. But you do get a special acknowledgement if you get ALL bananas in a stage - which again, is easy enough at first, but later on you may find yourself on a pinch to actually pull that off and may want to settle with the normal banana challenge.
The golden banana challenge is very much a stage dependant one as well for a simple reason: If the stage has a way to hide the banana in a hard to reach place, then you'll sure notice it when you go and try find it. It often isn't really about finding out where it is but more so how to get it, as most of hard Golden Bananas make use of whatever gimmick the stage is using to force you into being creative to grab it.
Obviously, not all stages have that luxury, with the easier ones being somewhere nearby from the beaten path or even right behind the goal, but you will sure get a kick out of trying to catch a Golden Banana that requires you to pause a bridge into the right angle to jump off it into the high ledge the thing is placed at, or being placed at a particularly unwieldy piece of terrain you have to figure out how to move around without dying.
Now, the time challenges...if you are someone who hopes that a game has some meat on its challenges, then you won't be disappointed. Almost all of the stages have either a tight timer you have to really play well for, or require you to specifically use a stage's quirk with a spindash to do a skip and get the required time.
There may be a few cases where there's an even bigger skip that the game expects you to pull off to beat the timer challenge, but in most cases, you'll have to go and earn it with that the game wants you to use.
For example, in this stage, you're normally meant to use all four colored switches to get the stuff out of the way. The blue and red switches need to be used since they otherwise completely block the way up into the goal...but the green and yellow switches, while also get stuff out of the way, can be skipped if you can spindash through the pipes fast enough to gain height and skip over the yellow barrier without its switch.
...And then there's an even harder hidden time challenge for every stage, which you can only see whenever you clear the normal one. So if you thought that the time challenges in this game could be tough already, then you may want to avoid those extra time challenges unless you have got enough of the rest of the game. There's a high probability that you'll also need specific characters for specific stages if aiming for the extra time challenges.
Impressions so far?
Definitely more fun that I expected it would be. My knowledge of the game before trying it out was somewhat mixed [had seen the praise the game had got from most players but also had seen a few less excited reviews from old monkey ball fans] but also lackluster in general, as I didn't feel much interest on the game knowing that it was going to be out of my reach for a while - until those few days where I did get a shot at sinking some time into it for once.
I think that what does it for me is, besides the Spin Dash being a more logical addition to the gameplay than the Jump, that stages once again offer some variety in challenge, not just by having some inventive stuff as early as World 2, but also in the levels and their skip-enabling geometry having a visible purpose to players.
The first two Super Monkey Ball games rewarded fast times with extra points and also could allow better survival chances if a skip is relatively easier or faster to do than the intended method [Stamina Master and Bridge Master in SMB1 are good examples]. Rewarding survival is something that their Challenge modes did prominently too through the incentive of Extra stages only available through no-continue clears.
Banana Blitz could also have glimpses of that, but due to the jump mechanic being at the front, it feels like you'll either cheese stages through jumping since it makes the balancing acts unnecessary...or is a crutch you have to apply to survive some stages, either to gain more balance or because the stage is designed to be a mini platforming level - which means you HAVE to jump anyways.
In the original Wii version, you technically had a reason to try sae your lives to beat all worlds without continues, as you'd unlock the final two worlds by beating the rest with no continues, but as the HD port both allows a way to farm for lives AND makes the final worlds accessible just by clearing the first 8 in any way,
I have heard that Banana Rumble DOES have extra secret levels too, although I don't know how to access them yet since I'm nowhere near the end of the normal stages [played up to World 4], but even if they weren't there, any player that wanted the game to give them mini challenges that reward playing a different way than usual will get those, which means you'll actually squeeze more time and juice out of the game's worlds if you are trying to complete all of the normal challenges.
So...yeah. I have liked it quite a lot, and is kind of crazy that the game is going to have its first anniversary in a few weeks while still being locked to the Nintendo Switch specifically. It is funny to think that Super Monkey Ball debuted on consoles as a Gamecube exclusive, and and currently their best fully original game in years is also Nintendo exclusive. Whether it may become multiplatform on that anniversary or if it will take another year for it to be freed, who knows, but besides that, it has been quite worth it to play through.
How tough will the final levels and extra levels on this one would be? Who knows, but likely quite a fair bit from what I've hard...although at least here you have the power of camera control on your side.
