Hey there, ever wanted to see the peak of 3D racing games in 1992?
I know, I know, a very oddly specific date...but think about it.
At home, the best of 3D racing for the Super Nintendo at least before or during 1992 were represented by F-Zero, Super Mario Kart and Top Gear, using the Mode 7 capabilities of the console [or in the case of Top Gear, taking a similar approach to SEGA's Outrun for a 3D-looking bending road, even if choppy in framerate]. SEGA has for the Sega Genesis games like Road Rash and the home conversion of Outrun.
I think you get it: 3D racing games for consoles were obviously bound by the hardware limitations, although obviously still getting some great output of racers thanks to the developers creativity in working around those.
So...I want you to take that in mind when you see this game of today, Virtua Racing, being released in arcades in 1992.
Sure, it didn't have textures yet- something that would be paid in spades when SEGA followed up the Model 1 arcade board with the Model 2 and flexed their new powerhouse with games like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2...
...But make no mistake, for the time, and especially how they still managed to get something quite good looking by building enviroments with vibrant colors over the flat shaded polygons and a rock solid framerate, Virtua Racing on the Model 1 was INCREDIBLY ahead of anything else you could play on console or even arcades- and being followed by Virtua Fighter which was the trailblazer of 3D fighting games [only overshadowed sometime later when Tekken started building up fame with a cheaper PS1-based hardware until Tekken 3 took the world by storm].
Nowadays though, what does Virtua Racing as a game of its time offer when played now?
Arcade Style Formula One Racing
Controls are simple, in theory. You drive, you accelerate, you brake...and that's it. It is a Formula One car, so you don't really engage with crazy drifts either- and you don't want to either, since if the car loses too much grip, it will likely spin out or send you into a wall.
Unlike later SEGA arcade games, while this is undoubtedly arcade with the way the car drifts if you steer too hard without letting go of the accel [looking like a drift...but not as effective in steering as one], it is interesting that it does require a level of fundamentals that you might otherwise expect in sim racers.
Applying fundamentals of taking lines and brakes when necessary is definitely to be required alongside learning the track to strategize for it, as well as letting go of the accel here to control your speed if trying to go over a sharp turn [just enough to control the speed and handling while not dipping the speed as drastically as a brake].
When you get to adjust to what it asks, it can be pretty satisfying as you definitely feel like one mistake on this high-speed car can cost you the entire race...and therefore making it to GET GOAAAAAAL is like a prize in itself.
Especially considering the default timer does not mess around- if you are picking this up for the first time then chances are that most of your races will end in a time out unless you apply yourself to practice the tracks. And of course, if you hit a car during the race, consider your run dead due to the massive time lost from spinning out.
However, there's arguably another reason for that difficulty: Manual Transmission is yet again a tool to be used for the most optimal of races.
While it isn't a surprising idea for me, considering both Daytona USA and even Outrun 2 are far easier to tackle if you use gear shifts for instant drifts compared to Automatic alongside higher top speed, here it has to be the higher top speed and higher accel from downshifting if forced to lower your speed that can give you an edge to win the race...
...Except even that alone isn't enough to secure a victory.
Classic SEGA difficulty since the beginning
Virtua Racing can be...deceptively difficult in what it demands from you to specifically aim for a Goal finish, let alone a first place finish. That is not only because of driving a fast car that will turn into dust if it bumps a wall the wrong way, but mainly due to the AI performance in its default difficulty.
You can likely gauge how well you are making progress in learning to deal with this game as you keep getting closer to Top 4 or Top 3, more so when you avoid little mistakes that can easily cost you a few positions to stay forever out of your reach.
But first place?
First place finishes are only for the most dedicated.
Daytona USA is fairly doable if you know how to do drifts [with manual transmission] and learned the tracks, and so is SEGA Rally Championship when you have memorized the places where you want to be careful with the steering and acceleration [dammit Lakeside] as the timer is actually the hardest opponent in the game rather than the opponent cars themselves.
In Scud Race, handling the car without crashing is the biggest challenge in itself due to how sensitive the steering is and how easily it starts drifting if you steer too hard- a powerful weapon for those who mastered the game...but the biggest obstacle for anyone who hasn't.
Even SEGA Touring Car Championship is a tough nut to crack when steering too hard makes you lose speed and the tracks are a pretty tight deal in themselves, also leaving you with little room for error if you want first.
Here though, for one example, I did my best on an Acropolis run [the Expert track] with the lines and avoiding any fatal mistakes, as well as avoiding as much as possible eating the offroad over that one sharp turn.
And the best I got is 3rd Place. Not anything to scoff at, but should give you the idea that becoming a true champion in this game is far more difficult than it seems despite the simpler looking handling and driving than the other examples.
I went the extra mile to try playing this in Manual mode just to see if that was the secret sauce, on top of, instead of usually playing with the Keyboard [I configured the emulator to have less sensitivity when steering for it to be playable], I tested using the Mouse [also configured in sensitivity].
And despite having both the power of precise steering through the mouse and higher top speed from manual, along with Gear 6 being surprisingly good for speeds around 220 to 280kmh...I still could only get a maximum of 3rd Place in Advanced and Expert tracks.
But oh well, at least I did get 1st in Beginner with Automatic when I was testing the mouse steering in that session though :]
And the Acropolis run is older than the other two videos I've posted here as it was done with keyboard steering [heavilg adjusted sensitivity, but still less optimal when you can't take precise lines] so it might be doable if I apply myself in another session.
Bay Bridge though I had been trying with the mouse steering from start [since selecting it with the keyboard is a challenge in itself] but it seems that only if I get the best laps consistently [my best lap recently was a 0'48 but the other three laps after the first were 0'49].
A little section to talk about the presentation
Despite the way it doesn't have textures is a limitation, the fact the game still does the most it can with detailed roads and an assortment of enviroments between the three tracks, as well as the tracks themselves being quite the fine work visually and gameplay wise with the slopes and bends [visually, they are another flex of the hardware...and gameplay wise, you really gotta know how to approach them rather than see them as just another turn].
While this game doesn't have full track music unlike the rest of SEGA's output, especially interesting when knowing Takenobu Mitsuyoshi [most known for Daytona USA's soundtrack...oh, sorry, DAYTOOONAAAAAAAAAAAAA] was involved, there's still hints of greatness already here between the Awaiting for Challengers theme, starting jingles of each track and the Time Extension/Lap Cleared jingles that also play gradually which give you a sense of progression when surviving longer and longer these tracks.
More so when beyond those jingles, the game doesn't have any music, only leaving you with the roaring, more high pitched than usual engines of your car.
In another day, I may talk about the other ports of the game, between the humble yet playable [as long as you tolerate the framerate] ports on Genesis and 32X, the odd SEGA Saturn port, andthe more high-fidelity port in the PS2 with some extras and changes.
Honorable mentions to the one port I can't play, which is the SEGA AGES Switch port that beyond having brighter colors than playing in MAME [but less washed than the PS2 port], is arguably the best port due to being as close to the arcade as possible compared to the rest while upgrading the framerate, resolution and draw distance and even providing up to eight player splitscreen.
Do you know how many games today don't even give you the option to play splitscreen with just two players, let alone four? The fact they thought on adding EIGHT is quite insane, as well as a nod to the original cabinet also being able to link up eight players.
Conclusion
If you have a Switch and willing to test your might with this game's controls, then it sure could be worth a shot as it is not only the best port available, but also the only official port you can even buy in any platform as of today.
Yes...unfortunately it is the ONLY modern console that has a port of Virtua Racing...
But if you are willing to tackle this game too through emulation, either through MAME [although beware of the game ocasionally having freak collision issues due to Model 1 not being perfectly emulated to this day] or through the Switch version, then it sure can be a fun romp to try at most, and a game to sink your teeth into and master at best.
If you want to go for the safest option emulation wise, or can't run the Switch port, then probably the best option after those would be the PS2 port, despite the washed colors and...more frequent tire screeching sounds. I'll probably talk more in-depth about the 32X port first as that one was my first recent experience with the game before the arcade version...
