For most people, the first thing that comes to mind from saying "visual novel" are those dating simulators you could stumble by on the DS, PSP, or even while roaming around the Steam page, but visual novels can allow for the creativity in designing a story to flourish in a resourceful way, as well as how many known games of this kind add something extra to complement both the story and to have it more interactive in order to stand out, like Ace Attorney, Danganronpa and Doki Doki Literature Club.
I had started first writing this to discuss about Ace Attorney's breakout success as a game of this style into the international landscape thanks to the personality behind it (and there's also DDLC's case, but that's for a different reason), but I then thought that VNs as a medium happened to be used in quite a few ways for a reason.
What are visual novels?
You could say they are like reading a book or novel, but in a digital form where you hit a button to scroll through the lines that are displayed in one way or another, often with a character being displayed with according expressions (unless its your character speaking in first person).
To make things simple, the Wikipedia page for the term says the following:
Visual novels are distinguished from other game types by their generally minimal gameplay. Typically the majority of player interaction is limited to clicking to keep the text, graphics and sound moving as if they were turning a page (many recent games offer "play" or "fast-forward" toggles that make this unnecessary), while making narrative choices along the way. Another main characteristic of visual novels is their strong emphasis on the prose, as the narration in visual novels is delivered through text. This characteristic makes playing visual novels similar to reading a book.
What can make these more engaging than the usual is the fact you are shown these characters, backgrounds, and sometimes even dedicated illustrations to specific events, which means that you can have a reference of how these characters look, their expressions on a given moment, and so on.
The main draw also tends to be from the interactivity factor: Choices that set you on different paths or influence the story into a certain ending, or puzzles and minigames that bridge segments to progress on the story. So even with the extra bells and whistles from the presentation, as well as the story that's narrated, whatever you are given to do or to choose adds a sprinkle of personality through your first playthroughs on most of these.
You might think that these might be somewhat "cheap" compared to other types of games or even media for storytelling like animations, films, or if you are extra picky, something too extra compared to simple text novels.
And these CAN take up less resources to make nowadays due to tools like RenPy to create your own visual novels, in the same way that some known horror games on the internet like Mad Father, The Witch's House and Angels of Death (the last one I had actually played through start to end) have been out there thanks to RPG Maker, but that doesn't mean that there's a level of quality missing from these.
Writing can make or break many story or character driven projects, so that is still a big factor on a VN's success, but with the element of being able to see (and in most cases, interact with) the characters here along with the backgrounds and any cutscene pictures does mean that designing the characters as well as the settings you will be looking at are quite important to get right. Which is easier said than done, something you can realize quick if you are trying to do something without simply using stock images and existing designs.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is one example of a humbly made series of VNs that sprung to popularity and getting the many adaptations it has, due to how despite the backgrounds seem to be blurry real life photos of somewhere and the artstyle might look amateur, said backgrounds along with the also very important sound design for ambience let you feel the setting without many words, and the character designs plus writing have them quite stand out.
If you have watched anything that happens on the anime, funny, like Rika's "NIPAHHH" misadventures, or...not quite as funny (to put it in a way), then just picture that those moments must have worked well enough with text, sound and PNGs of the characters being shown to you in the first place along with the writing of the story making it worthwhile to adapt when it got popular enough.
Another case of a small VN turning into a franchise, arguably a surprisingly big one, is none other than Fate: stay night. From what I read, the original 2004 game was an eroge with three different paths to choose depending of which girl you wanted to stick with, but every new port and adaptation of this original visual novel gets rid of those aspects, and the franchise basically left that "dark past" behind with how it branched out in many stories, spinoffs, and no explicit content. The same happened with Tsukihime (also known as the VN that the Melty Blood fighting games are based off...you know, the one with this thing), which had its anime adaptation and recently-releaed remake cut off its explicit scenes as well, and was also made by Fate.
...So yeah, that a VN is resourceful with how many assets it has while looking somewhat simple due to it being a two-man project, or if it is made for a certain adult public, hasn't stopped them from their stories and designs transcend enough to get their following and big-budget anime productions they have received today. Even if this is indeed talking about "extraordinary success stories" in particular.
Even 4chan at one point managed to scramble for years to make the Katawa Shoujo visual novel, which while also has a few explicit scenes (that can be disabled from the game itself), had gained quite the reputation for its heartwarming stories against all odds.
Oh, and the amazing Steins;Gate anime comes from a VN as well...there sure quite many notable anime adaptations made out of visual novels, aren't there?
However, I would still highlight VNs that despite the medium, stand out with the setting of the story as well as the extras they add for interactivity:
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors appeared on the Nintendo DS with the intriguing premise of said 9 persons trapped inside a sort of game where they have to figure out how to solve the chambers in order to open doors...and putting aside anything about the story that could be spoiled or hard to put in words, the fact is that you have to find solutions in certain rooms as if you were the one trapped in order to move on, adding to the immersion as you follow the story as one of the characters involved.
Ace Attorney, the reason I started writing this, has you play as an attorney in zanier settings than expected: You basically double as an investigator with how you have to roam the crime scene or any other places you visit for clues along with talking to people related to the case until you are allowed to move on the courtroom. And in the courtroom, you'll have to press on whatever the witnesses say until you notice a blatant lie to counter with one of the clues you have obtained.
VA11 HALL-A has a simple beverage mixing thing as you play as a bartender serving drinks to customers, with different dialogue outcomes depending of what you give the customer, and while the gameplay might be lick on that matter, the few extra things and endings you can discover just from that mechanic are pretty interesting. The fact that the presentation is great with its soundtrack and visuals definitely helps it stand out alongside its story.
And Danganronpa...I'll admit that I haven't played any of the games or watched anything related to it to know by hand how these play, but it seems that goes in a similar way to what Ace Attorney does (having to roam for clues in certain times) but also with times where you can simply spend time talking with the characters with different dialogue options...and then being in another "courtroom" having to prove your own innocence or the lies of another character along with other minigames.
There's also the aforementioned Doki Doki Literature Club, which is honestly hard to talk about without telling away any twists, so in the case you somehow aren't aware...
! [DDLC first spoilers] The fact that this game throws you a very typical dating sim setting without any additional gameplay mechanics which makes it the perfect trap for unassuming players...and then pull the rug after you finish the "first Chapter" when things start going VERY wrong with what you see in the game, dialogue, and how the characters behave. The idea of a basic sim that hides something sinister and messes with the fourth wall is quite genius, which is why this game exploded back when it was released out of nowhere for unsuspecting players, outside of a suspicious "disturbing content" warning, to try chewing on until getting jumped.
And...that's it for now; there's quite a lot to unpack when you start tallying up a bunch of these known games under a single umbrella, but the idea that many of these shine while letting just the characters and story be (along with gameplay mechanics whenever's the case) and manage to succeed as worthwhile games is pretty interesting.
Even though it is possible to have that idea of VNs being all about the typical dating sim, you never know what kind of stories, great, unique, absurd, and so on, you can find from a Visual Novel thanks to the format being simple enough for anyone with character designs, a story to tell and a vision to follow, to try and make their own to show to the world.
...
But there's also the existence of very goofy things made with RenPy, but that alongside any meme RPG Maker games will be a story for another day.

A la mayoría de la gente, lo primero que le viene a la cabeza al decir "novela visual" son esos simuladores de citas con los que te puedes tropezar en la DS, la PSP o incluso mientras deambulas por la página de Steam, pero las novelas visuales pueden permitir que la creatividad a la hora de diseñar una historia florezca de forma ingeniosa, así como que muchos juegos conocidos de este tipo añadan algo extra para complementar tanto la historia como para hacerla más interactiva con el fin de destacar, como Ace Attorney, Danganronpa y Doki Doki Literature Club.
Primero había empezado a escribir esto para hablar sobre el éxito de Ace Attorney como juego de este estilo en el panorama internacional gracias a la personalidad que hay detrás (y también está el caso de DDLC, pero eso es por una razón diferente), pero luego pensé que las NV como medio resulta que se usan de bastantes maneras por una razón.
¿Qué son las novelas visuales?
Se podría decir que son como leer un libro o una novela, pero en formato digital, donde se pulsa un botón para desplazarse por las líneas que se muestran de una forma u otra, a menudo con un personaje que se muestra con expresiones acordes (a menos que sea tu personaje el que habla en primera persona).
Para simplificar, la página de Wikipedia sobre el término dice lo siguiente:
Las novelas visuales se distinguen de otros tipos de juegos por su jugabilidad generalmente mínima. Y éstas PUEDEN requerir menos recursos para hacerlas hoy en día debido a herramientas como RenPy para crear tus propias novelas visuales, del mismo modo que algunos juegos de terror conocidos en internet como Mad Father, The Witch's House y Angels of Death (el último al que realmente he jugado de principio a fin) han salido a la luz gracias a RPG Maker, pero eso no significa que haya un nivel de calidad ausente en éstos.
La escritura puede ser el motor de muchos proyectos basados en historias o personajes, por lo que sigue siendo un factor importante en el éxito de una VN, pero con el elemento de poder ver (y en la mayoría de los casos, interactuar con) los personajes aquí, junto con los fondos y las imágenes de las escenas, significa que el diseño de los personajes, así como de los escenarios, es muy importante. Lo cual es más fácil de decir que de hacer, algo de lo que te darás cuenta rápidamente si intentas hacer algo sin usar simplemente imágenes de archivo y diseños ya existentes.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni es un ejemplo de una serie de VNs hecha humildemente que saltó a la popularidad y consiguió las muchas adaptaciones que tiene, debido a cómo a pesar de que los fondos parecen ser fotos borrosas de la vida real de algún lugar y el estilo artístico puede parecer amateur, dichos fondos junto con el también muy importante diseño de sonido para el ambiente te permiten sentir el escenario sin muchas palabras, y los diseños de los personajes más la escritura los hacen destacar bastante.
Si has visto algo de lo que ocurre en el anime, divertido, como las desventuras "NIPAHHH" de Rika, o... no tan divertido (por decirlo de alguna manera), entonces imagínate que esos momentos deben haber funcionado bastante bien con texto, sonido y PNGs de los personajes que se te muestran en primer lugar junto con la escritura de la historia haciendo que valga la pena adaptarla cuando se hizo lo suficientemente popular.
Por lo que he leído, el juego original de 2004 era un eroge con tres caminos diferentes a elegir dependiendo de la chica con la que quisieras quedarte, pero cada nuevo port y adaptación de esta novela visual original se deshace de esos aspectos, y la franquicia básicamente dejó atrás ese "pasado oscuro" con la forma en que se ramificó en muchas historias, spinoffs, y sin contenido explícito. Lo mismo ocurrió con Tsukihime (también conocida como la VN en la que se basan los juegos de lucha de Melty Blood... ya sabes, la que tiene esta cosa), cuya adaptación al anime y remake recientemente publicado también eliminó las escenas explícitas, y también fue creada por Fate.
...Así que sí, que una VN sea ingeniosa con la cantidad de recursos que tiene mientras parece algo simple debido a que es un proyecto de dos personas, o si está hecha para cierto público adulto, no ha impedido que sus historias y diseños trasciendan lo suficiente como para conseguir los seguidores y las producciones de anime de gran presupuesto que han recibido hoy en día. Aunque efectivamente se esté hablando de "historias de éxito extraordinario" en particular.
Incluso 4chan en un momento dado se las apañó durante años para hacer la novela visual de Katawa Shoujo, que aunque también tiene algunas escenas explícitas (que se pueden desactivar desde el propio juego), se había ganado bastante reputación por sus historias conmovedoras contra todo pronóstico.
Ah, y el increíble anime Steins;Gate también proviene de una VN... seguro que hay muchas adaptaciones de anime notables hechas a partir de novelas visuales, ¿no?
Sin embargo, yo destacaría las VN que, a pesar del medio, destacan por la ambientación de la historia y los extras que añaden para la interactividad:
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors apareció en Nintendo DS con la intrigante premisa de dichas 9 personas atrapadas dentro de una especie de juego en el que tienen que averiguar cómo resolver las cámaras para poder abrir puertas... y dejando a un lado cualquier cosa de la historia que pueda ser spoileada o difícil de poner en palabras, el caso es que tienes que encontrar soluciones en ciertas habitaciones como si tú fueras el atrapado para poder avanzar, lo que añade inmersión al seguir la historia como uno de los personajes implicados.
Ace Attorney, la razón por la que empecé a escribir esto, te pone en la piel de un abogado en escenarios más alocados de lo esperado: Básicamente, haces las veces de investigador y tienes que recorrer la escena del crimen o cualquier otro lugar que visites en busca de pistas, además de hablar con las personas relacionadas con el caso hasta que se te permite pasar a la sala del tribunal. Y en la sala del tribunal, tendrás que presionar sobre lo que digan los testigos hasta que te des cuenta de una mentira descarada para rebatirla con una de las pistas que hayas obtenido.
VA11 HALL-A cuenta con un sencillo sistema de mezcla de bebidas en el que juegas como camarero sirviendo bebidas a los clientes, con diferentes resultados de diálogo dependiendo de lo que le des al cliente, y aunque la jugabilidad puede ser floja en ese aspecto, las pocas cosas y finales extra que puedes descubrir sólo con esa mecánica son bastante interesantes. El hecho de que la presentación sea genial con su banda sonora y sus efectos visuales definitivamente ayuda a que destaque junto a su historia.
Y Danganronpa... reconozco que no he jugado a ninguno de los juegos ni he visto nada relacionado con él para saber de mano cómo se juegan estos, pero parece que va en una línea parecida a lo que hace Ace Attorney (tener que deambular en busca de pistas en ciertos momentos) pero también con momentos en los que simplemente puedes dedicar tiempo a hablar con los personajes con diferentes opciones de diálogo... y luego estar en otro "juzgado" teniendo que demostrar tu propia inocencia o las mentiras de otro personaje junto con otros minijuegos.
También está el ya mencionado Club de Literatura Doki Doki, del que sinceramente es difícil hablar sin desvelar ningún giro, así que en caso de que de alguna manera no estés al tanto...
¡>! [DDLC primeros spoilers] El hecho de que este juego te lance un escenario muy típico de simulación de citas sin ninguna mecánica de juego adicional que lo convierte en la trampa perfecta para los jugadores sin pretensiones ... y luego tirar de la manta después de terminar el "primer capítulo" cuando las cosas empiezan a ir MUY mal con lo que se ve en el juego, el diálogo, y cómo se comportan los personajes. La idea de un sim básico que esconde algo siniestro y se mete con la cuarta pared es bastante genial, y por eso este juego explotó cuando salió de la nada para que los jugadores desprevenidos, fuera de una sospechosa advertencia de "contenido perturbador", intentaran masticarlo hasta que les saltaran encima.
Y... eso es todo por ahora; hay mucho que desentrañar cuando empiezas a agrupar un montón de estos juegos conocidos bajo un mismo paraguas, pero la idea de que muchos de ellos brillan dejando ser sólo los personajes y la historia (junto con la mecánica de juego cuando es el caso) y consiguen triunfar como juegos que merecen la pena es bastante interesante.
Aunque es posible tener esa idea de que las VNs son todo sobre el típico dating sim, nunca se sabe qué tipo de historias, geniales, únicas, absurdas, etcétera, puedes encontrar de una Novela Visual gracias a que el formato es lo suficientemente simple para que cualquiera con diseños de personajes, una historia que contar y una visión que seguir, intente hacer la suya propia para mostrársela al mundo.
...
Pero también existen cosas muy tontas hechas con RenPy, pero eso junto con cualquier juego meme de RPG Maker será una historia para otro día.
