This one will be different than the usual, mainly because it comes from the events of playing Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth for a stream as I wanted to do that...and then picking up a challenge to make it more funny since it would be streamed: Play the game in Hard difficulty and Classic playstyle.
For a quick briefing, this WiiWare game made in the style of classic Castlevania games (or Classicvanias) by beating levels like a platformer instead of the later "Metroidvanias", got more devilish than what I expected when I chose to play in Hard mode. While Normal is fairly balanced to play through from what I remember, Hard not only increases the damage you get and the amount of enemies, but also replaces sections with harder ones, and also increases the amount of hearts you need for each sub-weapon usage. So for example, using the Holy Water takes a whopping 4 hearts from your wallet.
But I feel like some sections might not even have been changed other than jamming the last kind of enemies you would want to see in that place.
The game normally lets you control yourself mid-air and access to several subweapons you find while playing...but if you play with the Classic style, which I did, not only you have to use the locked jump forward/backwards arc from most of the classic games, but also you're left with only the Cross and Holy Water subweapons, just like in the japanese version of Castlevania The Adventure (which this game is a complete reimaigining of more than a remake).

There was more to the stream that was cut off in this first one since my internet got briefly disconnected and then later restarted in another stream...but I'll later explain to why I didn't bring that one up.
Though now I'm concerned about why I don't seem to be able to hear my voice in this stream...did it not happen to be recording or be picked up by OBS and didn't notice until now???

A deceptive first impression
The first stage obviously isn't supposed to kick things into terrible territory that soon, but it probably is the stage that doesn't have any layout changes to it at all, as the level itself seems just like I remember it from the times I just opened the game to play the first stage in Normal difficulty.
The game looks neat, the music is fantastic (oh and in my stream I was playing with a patched version that played the unused Battle of the Holy track, a remixed song from the original Adventure inside this game)...and the enemies here were simple to keep track of. Died once from not being careful enough, but was simple to deal with at the end.
Then the second stage threw me a shocking curveball.
The jellyfish want my blood
The second stage starts with some knights in a castle that are easy to dispatch after you stumbled your way upon their placement once, but whether you take the upper route with a key or be forced to go down if you don't, you'll sooner or later end up in these aquatic caverns...and then face with these jellyfish.
You REALLY got to be careful with these, since if you can't avoid or whip them out of the way due to moving in this odd vertical way, they can sure hit you...and likely knock you back into a nearby pit. Since these can appear in places nearby these wooden spinning wheels, you don't want to have them get close to you...and if you were playing with the classic mode like me, you had to figure out a way to hit them without commiting to a jump you don't know if you will pay dearly for because of missing the whip, crashing with the jellyfish and getting bumped backwards.
But while taking the upper route is cool to see even more stuff for this stage, I would recommend taking the lower route since the upper one will take way more with how much more stuff there is in there, as well as having an unique miniboss to fight against that doesn't appear in the lower route.
And there's the boss that can transform from big hulk to small but spinning agile guy...and honestly the smaller form gets me scared more since it could easily leap into my face to damage instead of being a big slow target to whip to death.
...Then the worst happened.
Bury me with my Vampire Killer
Stage 3 is the moment where my patience would get finally crushed thin after withstanding Stage 2's fickle but fair challenge, since here...it stopped being as fair as I thought it would be.
This alone at the start is already quite the multitasking to do: Jump off the ledge into this area with two red skeletons (which never die, only crumble and then reassemble), three skull things breathing fire, and a moving spear that will slash you if you don't get away or jump in time.
...So yeah, you gotta keep track of those red skeletons, keeping distance of the skulls attacks and make sure to jump the bloody spear all at once. If you ask me, even if it still bothers me a lot, getting away with just one hit from this area is kind of a victory for me with how more often than not I have taken two to three hits in this place alone, which easily means doom when there's something else awaiting beyond here...
A climb through these moving spears where you gotta learn the timing when they are going to pop out so that you jump exactly at the right time; too early and you will either not land or land on the spear's edge...and too late nad you will also hit the spear from below or bonk below the harmless base. Oh, and when you are getting close to the end of this climb, Medusa Heads will also start appearing to bother you.
But that's not the worse waiting for you.
For example, after that climb, you end up in this ledge with this skeleton on the next one.
If you don't have the Holy Water to hit it from that angle (or the Axe, but *the Axe didn't exist for me because I played in Classic mode), then all you got is to perhaps wait for it to move backwards enough and jump, or do a hail mary and hope that it decides to quickly move away instead of towards you when you jump even if it looks awfully close to the ledge. It happened to me twice or thrice where the skeleton didn't get away quickly enough and got immediately bounced off to the pit, and one moment in particular it looked like the skeleton actively hugged the ledge instead of getting away from it, which left me completely clueless about what you would even do if that happens.
And if you survive that and then the jumps in that area with red skeletons trying to get you, you end up in this downward section...
...Which isn't the hardest section to survive, but you will have the pressure on you from the last checkpoint being before the skeleton ledge area.
AND THEN, THE WORST ARRIVES.
This screen right here is what broke my bones with even more bones, and eventually ended my patience after three or four times out of several repeated attempts dying before getting here, because whenever I made it here, surviving whatever was happening here seemed like a cruel joke from the developers.
There are moving spears from the floors and ceilings, red skeletons trying to get you from the sides, and-
cough Let me emphasize this one.
SKELETONS THROWING BONES ABOVE YOU.
YOU GOTTA WATCH FOR THE RAIN OF BONES, THE RED SKELETONS INSISTING TO GET TOO CLOSE TO YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAIN OF BONES, JUMP OVER THE SPEARS, AND THIS WAS WHILE PLAYING WITH THE CLASSIC MODE WHERE I COULDN'T BACKTRACK FROM A JUMP IF I WANTED TO.
After 30 minutes from a new stream, I pretty much called it quits for the day, and saved a state of that level since this game does NOT have passwords, forcing you to go through the whole thing in one go if playing normally or in real hardware.
That would normally not be an issue, but with the most devilishly crafted levels and likely not exactly intended for the more stilted control style I opted to choose for a challenge, as well as me refusing to play with 9 lives which I could without a cheat code because "the oldschool challenge", I might as well swore off playing this specific difficulty and mode ever again if I couldn't restart from here in another day when its not giving me a headache.
But I ended up playing the first Castlevania for NES instead as a compensation for my early leave on this game. And that will be a story for another day, since there's some good to talk about...and there's some bad- COUGH COUGH FRANKENSTEIN AND IGOR AND THE SKELETON DRAGONS- cough- man...this was rough.
Conclusion?
I would have to play this game's Hard mode with the Normal playstyle with the axe and other sub-weapons at hand to be able to be completely fair in my assesment with that difficulty's level design in particular...but as it is while playing on the Classic mode given to you by the game itself, it feels like giving you an extra handicap to play on levels that already seem to be designed to tear you apart.
Seriously, not even Dracula X had this raw level of viciousness with its levels. It sure had the annoyance with Stage 6's knights and having to fight Death over and over, and Stage 7 was a cakewalk compared to having to deal with Dracula's pits in his fight...but this difficulty threw everything and more at the beginning of Stage 3 of all things.
That skeleton section you could theoretically do away with the upper skeletons IF YOU HAD THE AXE, WHICH YOU DON'T IN CLASSIC, but I also discovered through a video of someone completing the game in 1cc in Hard (absolute madman) that there's a hidden path that takes you to that upper area with the blue skeletons instead of having to walk down there. I guess that would be your best way to go through that part AT ALL, but specially if you don't have the axe at hand or can't ever have it.
But perhaps sometime later, likely not soon because I would be trying other things to let my sanity recover, I could go back to this and take all the stuff I've seen out there to put an end to this hard difficulty with a giant boulder of stiff jumps tacked on top of it.

Una primera impresión engañosa
La primera fase, obviamente, no tiene por qué ser terrible tan pronto, pero probablemente sea la fase que no tiene ningún cambio de diseño, ya que el nivel en sí parece tal y como lo recuerdo de las veces que he abierto el juego para jugar a la primera fase en dificultad Normal.
El juego tiene una pinta estupenda, la música es fantástica (oh, y en mi stream estaba jugando con una versión parcheada que reproducía el tema no usado Battle of the Holy, una canción remezclada de la Aventura original dentro de este juego)... y los enemigos aquí eran sencillos de seguir. Morí una vez por no ser lo bastante cuidadoso, pero al final fue fácil acabar con ellos.
Entonces la segunda fase me lanzó una impactante bola curva.

Pero aunque tomar la ruta superior es genial para ver aún más cosas de este escenario, yo recomendaría tomar la ruta inferior ya que la superior te llevará mucho más con la cantidad de cosas que hay allí, además de tener un miniboss único contra el que luchar que no aparece en la ruta inferior.

La Etapa 3 es el momento en el que mi paciencia se agotaría definitivamente tras soportar el caprichoso pero justo desafío de la Etapa 2, ya que aquí... dejó de ser tan justo como yo pensaba.
Esto solo al principio ya es toda una multitarea que hacer: Saltar de la cornisa a esta zona con dos esqueletos rojos (que nunca mueren, sólo se desmoronan y vuelven a juntarse), tres calaveras que respiran fuego y una lanza móvil que te acuchillará si no te alejas o saltas a tiempo.
...Así que sí, tienes que estar atento a esos esqueletos rojos, mantener la distancia de los ataques de las calaveras y asegurarte de saltar la maldita lanza a la vez. Si me preguntas a mí, aunque todavía me molesta mucho, salir con un solo golpe de esta zona es una especie de victoria para mí con lo a menudo que he recibido dos o tres golpes sólo en este lugar, lo que fácilmente significa la perdición cuando hay algo más esperando más allá de aquí...

En serio, ni siquiera Drácula X tenía este nivel de crueldad con sus niveles. Claro que tenía el fastidio de los caballeros de la Fase 6 y de tener que luchar contra la Muerte una y otra vez, y la Fase 7 era pan comido comparada con tener que lidiar con las fosas de Drácula en su lucha... pero esta dificultad lo tiraba todo y más al principio de la Fase 3 de todas las cosas.
Esa sección de esqueletos teóricamente podrías prescindir de los esqueletos superiores SI TUVIERAS EL HACHA, QUE NO TIENES EN CLÁSICO, pero también descubrí a través de un vídeo de alguien completando el juego en 1cc en Difícil (loco absoluto) que hay un camino oculto que te lleva a esa zona superior con los esqueletos azules en vez de tener que bajar andando. Supongo que esa sería la mejor forma de pasar por esa parte EN ABSOLUTO, pero sobre todo si no tienes el hacha a mano o no puedes tenerla nunca.
Pero quizás algún día más adelante, probablemente no pronto porque estaría probando otras cosas para dejar que mi cordura se recupere, podría volver a esto y coger todo lo que he visto por ahí para poner fin a esta dura dificultad con un peñasco gigante de saltos rígidos clavado encima.
