¡Saludos, Hive! El post de hoy es uno muy especial para mí ya que es el primero de una serie de reseñas/retro reseñas que estaré haciendo acerca de los títulos principales de la saga de The Legend of Zelda (excluyendo The Legend of Zelda de NES y Zelda II The Adventure of Link, porque si bien los he jugado y conozco sus dinámicas, no los he terminado). En estas reseñas hablaré de su impacto en la franquicia de The Legend of Zelda y en el mundo de los videojuegos en general, y por supuesto de mi experiencia jugándolos.
Así que sin más preámbulos ¡Comencemos!
He decidido iniciar esta serie con uno de los mejores juegos de la SNES y también el que es considerado el mejor juego de Zelda en 2D, e incluso por algunos, el mejor de la franquicia: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Este juego fue lanzado originalmente en Japón el 21 de noviembre de 1991 para la consola SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), el 13 de abril de 1992 en Norteamérica, y en Europa en septiembre de 1992. Posteriormente, el 2 de diciembre del 2002, el juego fue re-lanzado para la consola portátil Game Boy Advance.
Esta entrega toma las bases de los Zelda anteriores y las lleva a un nuevo nivel. Nuevamente se nos presenta un mundo semi-abierto (con un mapeado bastante grande considerando las capacidades de la época) en el que se nos da la libertad de explorar casi cada rincón de Hyrule. El mundo está lleno de secretos que si bien no son fáciles de descubrir, pensando unos minutos en la solución y las posibilidades según nuestro equipamiento actual no debería ser mayor problema.

Todos los secretos están integrados de manera sutil y orgánica, lo suficiente como para sospechar que hay algo oculto, pero sin decírtelo explícitamente. Algo muy especial de esta entrega, es que añade elementos que se quedaron en la franquicia como un sello de identidad, por ejemplo, es en este juego donde escuchamos por primera vez la famosa Zelda’s Lullaby, visitamos Villa Kakariko, el giro con la espada cargada, viajamos en dos versiones del mismo mundo, se añaden las piezas de corazón, y por supuesto, es la primera aparición de la legendaria espada destructora del mal: la Espada Maestra. También mejora de manera increíble la interacción con el mundo en relación a sus antecesores; el mundo logra sentirse vivo, cada NPC tiene una historia que contar y muchas veces hablar con un NPC trae recompensas para facilitar nuestra aventura.

Jugabilidad
Después del no tan exitoso The Adventure of Link, Nintendo decidió volver a la jugabilidad desde la vista aérea, pero mejorada. Esta vez Link golpea con la espada de manera horizontal y no vertical (gracias), dándole así un rango y versatilidad mucho más amplios. A esto le sumamos un arsenal de objetos bastante variado y divertido de usar; tenemos el famoso gancho, que nos atrae hacía objetos (haciendo debut y convirtiéndose en un objeto insignia de la franquicia), las bombas, el arco y flechas, un medidor de magia con el que podemos atacar usando el cetro de fuego y hielo o los talismanes elementales, las botellas para recuperar nuestros corazones o el poder mágico a través de pociones, las botas Pegaso para hacer un ataque dash, etc. Todos los objetos tienen utilidad durante la partida y ninguno se siente fuera de lugar, aunque hay ciertas secciones (las mazmorras por ejemplo) en las que un objeto específico tendrá una mayor relevancia.

Las mazmorras son divertidas y en ningún momento se sienten repetitivas a pesar de que son bastantes. Cada una tiene su propia mecánica según el objeto que debas usar y su temática, por limitaciones técnicas los sprites son los mismos para casi todas las mazmorras (y cuevas) por lo que visualmente son bastante parecidas. La dificultad se siente bastante justa: no es un paseo por el parque pero tampoco está al nivel de por ejemplo, Dark Souls, habrán secciones que quizás sean un poco frustrantes pero nada que un poco de paciencia no pueda solucionar. Eso sí, creo que este juego es mucho más difícil que la mayoría de las entregas en 3D de la saga.
Sonido
A Link to the Past cuenta con una banda sonora excepcional que acompaña maravillosamente cada paso que damos a través del extenso Hyrule. Como dije anteriormente, es en esta entrega cuando escuchamos por primera vez temas que se convirtieron en referentes de la saga, y otras que, a pesar de no aparecer de nuevo, se quedaron en la memoria de los fanáticos, siendo una de ellas el increíble tema del Dark World, tema que da paso a la segunda parte de esta épica aventura.
Los efectos de sonido en general son bastante buenos, acompañan muy bien cada situación y tienen buena calidad.

Historia
No me gustaría ahondar demasiado en la historia para evitar spoilers (si, sé que es un juego bastante viejo, pero eso no quiere que todo el mundo lo haya jugado), la historia en líneas generales es bastante sencilla, es una historia típica del bien contra el mal, llevada de muy buena forma y fácil de entender. Nuestro protagonista, Link recibe una llamada de socorro desde el castillo de Hyrule nada más y menos que de la princesa Zelda, su tío decide ir al castillo porque sospecha que algo no va bien. Link sigue a su tío hasta el castillo y allí lo encuentra gravemente herido; antes de morir, le cede a Link su espada y su escudo para que salve a Zelda. Estando ya a salvo, la princesa Zelda le pide a Link que supere la prueba de las tres diosas para conseguir la Espada Maestra, y así terminar con el reinado malvado de Aghanim, rescatar a las siete doncellas, y liberar al mundo de la oscuridad.

Conclusiones
Después de jugar nuevamente The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past para efectos de esta reseña, me he dado cuenta que es un juego que ha envejecido de manera maravillosa. Cada uno de sus apartados es increíble, es el juego que definió a The Legend of Zelda como franquicia. Un juego largo que te mantendrá enganchado al menos unas 20 horas, y si nunca lo has jugado, si eres fan de Zelda o no, definitivamente deberías disfrutar este clásico de la historia de los videojuegos.

Greetings, Hive! Today’s post is a very special one for me because is the first of a reviews/retro reviews series about the main tittles in The Legend of Zelda saga (excluding NES’s The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II The Adventure of Link, games that I know and played but haven’t finished). In this reviews I’ll talk about their impact in the franchise and in video gaming world in general, and of course, my experience with them.
So, without any further ado, let’s start!
I’ve decided to start this series of reviews talking about one of the best SNES games and also the one that is considered the best 2D Zelda game, and even for some people the best entry in the franchise: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This game was originally released in Japan in November 21, 1991 for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) console, in April 13 1992 in North America, and September 1992 for Europe. The game was re-released in December 2, 2002, for the Game Boy Advance.
This game uses the bases of the previous installments and takes them to a whole new level. The setting is once again a semi-open world structure (with a pretty big mapping overall considering hardware capacities for the time) which we can freely explore at almost the last corner of Hyrule. The world is filled with secrets waiting to be discovered, these secrets are introduced in a very organic way, and things can look suspicious enough to catch your curiosity without being way too obvious.

Something really special about this entry is that it adds elements to the franchise that are present nowadays as a symbol, such as: this is the first installment of the franchise where we hear the Zelda’s Lullaby, we visit Kakario Village, the charged spin attack is added, we travel between two versions of the same world, the pieces of heart make their debut here, and, of course, is the first appearance of the legendary sword that banishes the evil: The Master Sword. It also improves in an incredible way world’s interaction in relation to previous games; this world feels alive, every NPC has something to say and talking with them most of times grants you benefits for your quest.

Gameplay
After the not so successful Zelda II, Nintendo decided to stick to the upper-view gameplay, but improved. This time Link’s sword slashes in a horizontal way rather than in a vertical way (thanks), meaning this that you have a better range and versatility. This is complemented by a diverse arsenal of weapons that is very fun to play; the hookshot, a chain that pulls us to objects (also a debuting item that kept with the franchise), the bombs, bow and arrows, a magic meter that we use with the fire and ice rods and the elemental talismans, bottles to replenish our health or magic meter, the Pegasus boots, used to perform a dash attack, etc. Every object has an utility in the game, though there are segments where a certain item will be especially useful (mostly on dungeons).

Dungeons are fun to play and they offer a decent puzzle challenge, they don’t become repetitive even though there are plenty of them. Every dungeon has their own design according to the item you’re using and the mechanic of the dungeon, however sprites between them are very similar due to the hardware capacities of the time (this happens with caves too). Difficulty feels pretty fair; it’s not a ride in the park, but it isn’t Dark Souls either, maybe you’ll have some problems with a specific section but nothing that a bit of patience can’t solve. Whereas, I think this game is way harder than almost any 3D Zelda installment.
Sound
A Link to the Past’s soundtrack is just amazing; every tune goes on wonderfully with every step you take throughout Hyrule’s big world. As mentioned before, in this entry we hear for the first time themes that nowadays are still a referent to the saga, and others that just kept into the fans memory, one of them being the incredible Dark World’s theme, that marks the beginning of this epic adventure second half.
Sound effects are pretty good in general and they suit perfectly with every situation.

History
I wouldn’t like to go to much deep in history-related in order to avoid spoilers (yes, I know it’s an old game, but that doesn’t mean that everyone has played it), in a general way we have an easy-going good vs evil storyline. Our silent protagonist, Link, receives a telepathic call coming from Hyrule’s castle by the princess Zelda itself. Link’s uncle decides to go check the castle because something’s bothering him; Link decides to follow him. Inside the castle, Link finds his uncle dying, before passing away; he gives Link his sword and shield in order for Link to save Zelda. After saving Zelda and being in a safe place, she encourages Link to success on the goddess trials in order to get the Master Sword, and by doing so, to put an end to the evil Aghanim kingdom, saving the seven princesses, and free the world from darkness.

Final thoughts
After completing once again the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in order to write this review, I realized that this game had got old in a marvelous way. It excels in everything what it does, is the game that defined The Legend of Zelda as a Franchise. A long game that will keep you hooked at least around 20 hours, if you had never played it, if you are a Zelda fan or not, you should definitely enjoy this classic from videogames history.
