I think many of us play video games for three reasons, because we like them, because we want to distract ourselves for a moment from what surrounds us, because we are attracted by the world and the story that the video game has to offer or because we can simply live from them (I know I named four reasons but it would be cooler if I said three xd), the truth is that we enjoy them. Whenever we play something our attention is around the videogame, always, and it is the most logical thing to do since it is what we are doing but looking at it in retrospect and in a different way we have not asked ourselves: is it necessary or obligatory that a videogame entertains us?
To answer that question, although the answer is more than clear to me, I propose that we take a little look at video games in two parts, the first one video games before 2000 and the second one video games after 2000. In the 80's and 90's video games were beginning to take more and more ground, there were already games like Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Pac-man, Ghosts'n Goblins, The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Resident Evil and who knows where to finish counting the amount of video games that I will not mention. With the advance of technology in this world, video games took a different route to the one they had in the beginning.
I would like to think that the main function of a video game (at that time) is that it was entertaining and amused the people who tried it, after all I don't think Tetris has a story as thick as Silent Hill, but the interesting thing is that playing a video game at that time was not that complicated in terms of story. The only narrative they needed was a character with a goal and a problem in between and even with that in the games like the aforementioned Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII, Half-Life and a lot of video games that had the attractive thing was the story.
With the arrival of the new century the narrative would take a more important role in video games, not to say the most important, and we would begin to see how the story was synonymous with video game because nowadays it seems that without story there is no video game. It may seem that I am complaining about the story in a videogame but it is not so, on the contrary, a good story always adds a big plus to a videogame. To not go too far games like Prince of Persia, The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Halo and many others are proof that having a story makes you a great game.
The story as an important role in the development of a video game has overshadowed a fundamental factor in video games which is: Fun. Having fun when playing can be key for many people for different reasons either to release stress, to forget about everything for a moment or to have a good time; the fun that is forced to be in the background is a factor that almost do not take much into account, or at least me, whenever I play if the story is entertaining and intuitive mechanics I do not stop to think about the fun that can be the game making me believe that fun is the most important thing, or maybe not?
Fun, I dare say, is a bit like art: subjective, what amuses one is not the same as what amuses the other or sometimes yes but mostly tends to be as subjective. Silent Hill puts us in the shoes of a person who is looking for his lost daughter in a town full of monsters and fog so thick that does not let you see more than four steps in front of you, that is accompanied by music that sometimes is synchronized with the moment and increases the tension of the moment, in Resident Evil we are a policeman who is a town full of zombies and has to survive, in Outlast we visit a madhouse and I do not think the fun has such a prominent role in this type of games.
To answer the question I generated at the beginning I have two answers, one long and the other short. Short answer: It is NOT necessary to have fun in a video game. Long answer: taking the example of the games I mentioned a moment ago lets us see that the fun is a bit optional depending on the type of game, I would like to believe that playing a fighting game is more fun than playing a Horror game. Personally I think that the idea of having fun in a video game is associated to the experience that the game offers, it is not the same to play Silent Hill than to play God of War, while one offers you terror and suspense the other one is going for sure giving you action with a good story.
So no, it is not necessary for a video game to be fun to entertain us, the fun in this world of video games goes hand in hand with the experience offered by the game and what you think is fun.

Creo que muchos de nosotros jugamos videojuegos por tres razones, porque nos gustan, porque queremos distraernos por un momento de lo que nos rodea, porque nos llama la atención el mundo y la historia que el videojuego tiene para ofrecernos o porque simplemente se puede vivir de ellos (sé que nombre cuatro razones pero quedaba más cool si decía tres xd), lo cierto es que disfrutamos de ellos. Siempre que jugamos a algo nuestra atención está entorno al videojuego, siempre, y es lo más lógico ya que es lo que estamos haciendo pero viéndolo en retrospectiva y de una manera diferente no se han preguntado: ¿es necesario u obligatorio que un videojuego nos divierta?
Para responder a esa pregunta, aunque la respuesta esté más que clara para mí, les propongo que le demos un pequeño vistazo a los videojuegos en dos partes, la primera los videojuegos antes del 2000 y la segunda los videojuegos después del 2000. En la década de los 80’s y 90’s los videojuegos estaban comenzando a tomar más y más terreno, ya existían juegos como Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Pac-man, Ghosts’n Goblins, The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Resident Evil y vaya a saber dónde terminar de contar con la cantidad de videojuegos que no voy a mencionar. Con el avance de la tecnología en este mundo los videojuegos tomaron una ruta diferente a la que tenían en un principio.
Me gustaría pensar que la función principal de un videojuego (para aquel entonces) es que fuera entretenido y divirtiera a las personas que lo probaban, después de todo no creo Tetris tenga una historia tan espesa como la de Silent Hill, pero lo interesante está es que jugar un videojuego en esa época no tan complicado a nivel de historia. La única narrativa que necesitaban era un personaje con un objetivo y un problema de por medio y aun con eso en los llegarían juegos como el ya mencionado Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy Vll, Half-Life y un montón de videojuegos más que lo atractivo que tenían era la historia.
Con la llegada del nuevo siglo la narrativa tomaría un papel más importante en los videojuegos, por no decir el más importante, y comenzaríamos a ver como la historia era sinónimo de videojuego porque actualmente parece que sin historia no hay videojuego. Puede llegar a parecer que me estoy quejando la historia en un videojuego pero no es así, al contrario, una buena historia siempre añade un gran plus a un videojuego. Por no ir muy lejos juegos como Prince of Persia, The Last of Us, Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, Halo y muchos otros son pruebas de que tener una historia te hace un gran juego.
La historia como papel importante dentro del desarrollo de un videojuego ha dejado opacado un factor fundamental en los videojuegos el cual es: La Diversión. Divertirse al momento de jugar puede ser clave para muchas personas por diferentes motivos ya sea para liberar el estrés, para olvidarte de todo por un momento o por pasar un buen rato; la diversión que se ve obligado a estar en un segundo plano es un factor que casi no tomamos mucho en cuenta, o por lo menos yo, siempre que juego si la historia es entretenida y las mecánicas intuitivas no me detengo a pensar en los divertido que puede llegar a ser el videojuego haciéndome creer que la diversión es lo más importante, ¿o talvez no?
La diversión, me atrevo a decir, que es un poco como el arte: subjetiva, lo que divierte a uno no es lo mismo que divierte al otro o en ocasiones sí pero mayormente suele ser como subjetivo. Silent Hill nos coloca en la piel de una persona que está buscando a su hija perdida en un pueblo lleno de monstruos y niebla tan espesa que no deja ver a más de cuatro pasos enfrente de ti, a eso le acompaña la música que en ocasiones se sincroniza con el momento y aumenta más la tensión del momento, en Resident Evil somos un policía que esta un pueblo lleno de zombies y tiene que sobrevivir, en Outlast visitamos un manicomio y no creo que la diversión tenga un papel tan resaltante en este tipo de juegos.
Para responder a la pregunta que genere al principio les tengo dos respuestas, una larga y la otra corta. Respuesta corta: NO es necesario divertirse en un videojuego. Respuesta larga: tomando el ejemplo de los juegos que mencione hace un momento nos deja ver que la diversión es un poco opcional dependiendo del tipo de juego, me gustaría creer que jugar un videojuego de peleas es más divertido que lo que te un videojuego de Horror. Personalmente pienso que la idea de divertirse en un videojuego va asociada a la experiencia que el juego ofrece, no es lo mismo jugar Silent Hill que jugar God of War, mientras que uno te ofrece terror y suspenso el otro se va los seguro dándote acción con una buena historia.
Por lo que no, no es necesario que un videojuego sea divertido para que nos entretenga, la diversión en este mundo de los videojuegos va de la mano con la experiencia que se ofrece el juego y de lo tu creas que es diversión.
