Movies and video games are two completely different things, while one gives us unsurpassed stories and memorable shots in an entirely audiovisual aspect the other allows us to interact with it. Although they are things that at first glance do not have something in common, if we get to detail more specifically in certain aspects we will find that they are a little more similar, or at least in recent times. Something that can not be denied and that is indisputable, is that both are arts in different forms of expression, and although it seems a little out of place to compare them is not impossible.
I don't want to generate debate by comparing, nor do I want to compare both media since it seems illogical to do so, I just want to expose a somewhat different thought about what I believe are these two great means of entertainment and art. I will try to focus on both points but I will focus a little more on video games, another time I will focus more on movies.
Movies are undoubtedly an incredible medium that has been around for too many years and with a lot of films that represent how important cinema is for today's society. Many films are considered as culture and not only because they are great but because the stories they tell and the feelings they convey managed to stay captured in history. But now, if we put ourselves to think in detail we could ask: "What is it that makes a movie good or so remembered?" Giving a concrete answer can be a bit counterproductive since we are imposing ideas on something that is supposed to be subjective.
The reasons why we like a specific film depend a lot on how much we love the details in the movies, beyond simply focusing on the story. A movie can be good or you can like it if you enjoyed its music, its story, the work of the actors, the photography, references to other things and so a lot of details that encompass that decision. In the same way it happens in video games only that they affect certain factors on the final decision to say if a video game is bad or good.
It is true that video games, in a general vision, are to have fun, to spend a different moment and to be able to clear our minds of our daily worries, but for quite some time now the original focus of a video game has been falling by the wayside to give more space to what you know as an interactive story. With this I am not referring to the genre that Telltale Games is used to handle, far from it, what I mean is that the focus has been taken more to the cinematic side in recent years.
That video games take a very cinematic approach is not so bad, the bad thing comes when the creators focus too much on the narrative of their story and forget one of the most important points in a video game, the gameplay. If a videogame is fun or not that is a separate issue but in my opinion neglecting the gameplay and the interaction that a player can have with the videogame world makes it lose value as what it is while playing it. For me, playing a video game in the style of Detroit Become Human does not make much sense since it is of the type that gives more focus to the story, I'm not saying that its gameplay is, since I have not played it, but I have tried other games of that style and I have not been convinced.
The Last of Us is a clear example of how a video game can have that cinematic style and be a video game at the same time, let's say it can afford to drink from the glasses, while it tells us a sad story with a world in decadence contradictorily its gameplay, simple but functional, makes it fun as a video game. I can say that it is a balanced mix between that cinematic touch but without neglecting the fact that it is a video game.
On the other hand we have the video games that are based on movies, I have not been lucky enough to play most of them, but the ones I have tried I have not liked. On one occasion I managed to play The Godfather: The Game and I can say that it is like a kind of GTA but with a horrible driving, all this said from a point of view of a person who plays casually, for fun and spend a different moment, but what I was trying did not please me much. Generally games based on movies are not usually as good as they are painted but at least they make the effort.
What else can I say, I was thinking about the relationship between cinema and video games, I managed to capture what I had in mind to do with video games, another time I will expose the idea but from the side of cinema. That video games have taken a vision a little closer to the movies I don't think it's bad because it gives a different touch to the way we perceive a video game but they can't move away from what they really are, a video game. Las películas y los videojuegos son dos cosas completamente aparte, mientras que una nos regala historias insuperables y planos memorables en un aspecto enteramente audiovisual el otro nos permite interactuar con el mismo. Aunque sean cosas que a simple vista no tengan algo en común, si nos colocamos a detallar más específicamente en ciertos aspectos encontraremos que son un poco más parecidos, o por lo menos en estos últimos tiempos. Algo que no se puede negar y que es indiscutible, es que ambos son artes en diferentes formas de expresión, y aunque parezca un poco fuera de todo compararlos no es imposible.
No quiero generar debate por andar comparando, tampoco quiero comparar amos medios ya que me parece ilógico hacerlo, solo quiero exponer un pensamiento un tanto diferente sobre, lo que creo, son estos dos grandes medios de entretenimiento y arte. Trataré de enfocarme en ambos puntos pero me centraré un poco más en los videojuegos, en otra ocasión me enfocaré más en las películas.
Las películas sin duda son un medio increíble que tiene demasiados años existiendo y con un montón de filmes que representan lo importante que es el cine para la sociedad de hoy en día. Muchas películas son consideradas como cultura y no solo por ser geniales sino porque las historias que cuentan y los sentimientos que transmiten lograron quedarse plasmados en la historia. Pero ahora, si nos colocamos a pensar detalladamente nos podríamos preguntar: “¿Qué es lo que hace que una película sea buena o tan recordada?” Dar una respuesta concreta puede ser un poco contraproducente puesto que estamos imponiendo ideas sobre algo que se supone que es subjetivo.
Los motivos por el que nos gusta un filme en específico dependen mucho de qué tanto amemos los detalles en las películas, más allá de simplemente centrarnos en la historia. Una película puede ser buena o te puede gustar si disfrutaste su música, su historia, el trabajo de los actores, la fotografía, referencias a otras cosas y así un montón de detalles que engloban esa decisión. De esta misma manera sucede en los videojuegos solo que afectan ciertos factores sobre la decisión final para decir si un videojuego es malo o es bueno.
Si es cierto que los videojuegos, en una visión general, son para divertirse, pasar un momento diferente y poder despejarnos de las preocupaciones diarias pero hace un buen tiempo el enfoque original de un videojuego a estado quedando de lado para dar más espacio a lo que conoces como una historia interactiva. Con esto no me estoy refiriendo al género que Telltale Games está acostumbrado a manejar ni mucho menos, lo que estoy queriendo decir es que el enfoque se ha llevado más al lado cinematográfico en los últimos años.
Que los videojuegos tomen un enfoque muy cinematográfico no está tan mal, lo malo viene cuando los creadores se enfocan mucho en la narrativa de su historia y olvidan unos de los puntos más importantes en un videojuego, la jugabilidad. Si un videojuego es divertido o no eso ya es otro tema aparte pero en mi opinión descuidar la jugabilidad y la interacción que puede tener un jugador con el mundo del videojuego hace que pierda valor como lo que es mientras lo esté jugando. Para mí, jugar un videojuego al estilo de Detroit Become Human no tiene mucho sentido puesto que es del tipo que le da mayor enfoque a la historia, no digo que su jugabilidad sea, ya que no lo he jugado, pero si he probado otros juegos de ese estilo y no me han convencido.
The Last of Us es un claro ejemplo de como un videojuego puede tener ese estilo cinematográfico y ser un videojuego al mismo tiempo, digamos que puede darse el lujo de beber de las copas, mientras que nos cuenta una historia triste con un mundo en decadencia contradictoriamente su gameplay, simple pero funcional, hace que como videojuego sea divertido. Puedo decir que es una mezcla balanceada entre ese toque cinematográfico pero sin descuidar el hecho de que es un videojuego.
Por otra parte tenemos los videojuegos que están basados en películas, no he tenido la suerte de proar la mayoría, pero los que he probado no me han gustado. En una ocasión logré jugar The Godfather: The Game y puedo decir que es como una especie de GTA pero con una conducción horrible, todo esto lo dijo desde un punto de vista de una persona que juega por casualmente, por diversión y pasar un momento diferente, pero lo que estuve probando no me agrado mucho. Por lo general los juegos basados en películas no suelen ser tan buenos como se pintan pero por lo menos hacen el esfuerzo.
Que más le puedo decir, estuve pensando sobre la relación del cine y los videojuegos, logré plasmar lo que tenía en mente hacer de los videojuegos, en otra ocasión expondré la idea pero desde el lado del cine. Que los videojuego hayan tomado una visión un poco más cercana a las películas no me parece mal porque le da un toque distinto a la forma que tenemos de percibir un videojuego pero tampoco pueden alejarse de lo que realmente son, un videojuego.
