Tainted Cain is undoubtedly one of the strongest characters in the game. Thanks to the Bag of Crafting, he's able to create anything. In a single run, it's possible to defeat all the main bosses by crafting an R Key, but to do so, you first need to understand the mechanics of this character – and that’s not so simple. In this guide, I’d like to show you one of the most popular early game strategies to achieve infinite pickups.

How does Tainted Cain work?

Tainted Cain doesn’t collect items in the traditional way – instead, every pedestal item (e.g., from gold rooms, boss rooms, etc.) breaks down into a set of pickups: coins, hearts, bombs, keys, batteries, etc.

The core mechanic of the character is the Bag of Crafting – a sack where you can store up to 8 pickups. Once you gather eight, the bag automatically crafts an item.

• Each type of pickup (e.g. penny, nickel, soul heart, golden bomb) has its own value and category. The combination of 8 pickups results in a specific item – crafting is not random, but fully predictable, especially when using the EID mod (link to post: @barreloflaughs/eng-pl-know-your-items)
• In theory, you can craft any item in the game, provided you have the right components – even Sacred Heart, R Key, Godhead or Death Certificate.
• Tainted Cain cannot pick up pedestal items — all of them must be crafted manually. That's why success depends on resource management and planning. In the image above, you see Pyromaniac – a top-tier item. Sadly, Tainted Cain can’t pick it up normally, only break it into ingredients.

In short: everything the game drops turns into crafting material. You decide what goes into your inventory. If you master crafting – Tainted Cain breaks the game.

Basics

While moving through rooms, do not pick up any pickups. Only after defeating the boss should you start interacting with pickups – this gives you the biggest pool of ingredients to work with.

Thanks to that:

• You gain full control over what goes into your sack.
• You avoid accidentally “ruining” a valuable combination with random pickups.
• You can create an ideal item as early as the first floor, if you plan your resources carefully.

⚠️ Important:

• If you see a Golden Bomb, Lucky Penny, or Nickel – don’t use them until you check if they’re useful for a high-value craft.

It’s also worth exploring secret rooms, because later you can spawn pedestal items in them, and those often break down into very valuable components.

Secret rooms tend to generate pickups like bone hearts, soul hearts, eternal hearts, lucky pennies or gold bombs – all of which have high crafting value. This allows access to powerful items with fewer resources.

It’s best to explore secret rooms before crafting on the floor, so you can plan your entire sack using those high-value ingredients.

Devil rooms and Angel rooms work similarly. When you “choose” an item, it breaks into valuable components. Focus on Angel rooms during the run – their items cost no health to obtain.

Early game build (infinite pickups)

To break the game with Tainted Cain, you only need two items:

• Piggy Bank – drops coins when you take damage
• Scapular – when you drop to half a red heart, you gain a soul heart. NOTE: this effect only triggers once per room and resets when you exit. So you must enter and leave repeatedly.

With these, you can take damage infinitely in several ways (fireplaces, curse room spikes). Just make sure to reset Scapular’s effect so you don’t die accidentally.

Next, collect 8 coins in the Bag of Crafting and craft Portable Slot. This item always has the same recipe (8 coins). After crafting it once, craft it again. When you receive a duplicate item, it drops its ingredients like a regular pedestal pickup. That gives you theoretical infinite pickups. But we’ll take it further.

Now craft School Bag, D20 and Sharp Plug. In any room, you can now generate coins (using Piggy Bank + Sharp Plug), then roll them into random pickups or chests using D20. It’s best to enter a Secret Room for this process to maximize your chance of pedestal items. This gives you the best quality ingredients and lets you craft virtually anything.

Items worth crafting and recommended trinkets

• Host Hat / Pyromaniac – There’s a chance a troll bomb spawns during rerolling. These items grant explosion immunity and prevent accidental deaths.

• Mitre – Increases the chance of eternal hearts (which have much higher value than regular hearts).

• R Key – Lets you restart your run while keeping your build. This allows you to fight all main bosses in a single run.

• Gilded Key – Trinket that turns all chests into golden ones. Greatly improves chances for pedestals, especially in secret rooms.

• Mama Mega! – Gives access to Boss Rush or Hush without having to rush through early floors.

• Dad's Lost Coin – Spawns a lucky penny, useful for high-tier item crafting.

• Birthright – Doubles the pickups received from pedestal items. Extremely good in late game.

• Luna – Adds 2 extra secret rooms per floor. More secret rooms = more opportunities for high-value pickups.

• The Mind – Reveals the full layout of the map, including icons. Great for optimizing secret room discovery.

The most important thing

To comfortably play as Tainted Cain, you should install the EID mod. It lets you browse possible crafts, search for specific items (some have over 20k possible recipes), lock crafting previews to track recipes, and constantly refresh craft possibilities.

Jak działa Tainted Cain?

Tainted Cain nie zbiera przedmiotów w tradycyjny sposób – zamiast tego każdy item z pedestal (np. z gold roomów, boss roomów itd.) zamienia się w zestaw pickupów: monet, serc, bomb, kluczy, baterii itd.

Główna mechanika postaci to Bag of Crafting – worek, do którego możesz wrzucać maksymalnie 8 pickupów. Po zebraniu ośmiu przedmiotów worek automatycznie tworzy jeden item.

• Każdy typ pickupa (np. penny, nickel, soul heart, golden bomb) ma swoją wartość i kategorię. Podczas przechodzenia po pokojach, nie podnoś żadnych pickupów. Dopiero po pokonaniu bossa możemy zacząć działać – umożliwi nam to jak największy wybór spośród przedmiotów gotowych do craftingu.

Dzięki temu:

• Zyskujesz pełną kontrolę nad tym, co wrzucasz do worka.
• Unikasz przypadkowego „zepsucia” kombinacji przez niepotrzebne pickupy.
• Możesz stworzyć idealny item już na pierwszym piętrze, jeśli dobrze zaplanujesz zasoby.

⚠️ Ważne:

• Jeśli widzisz np. Golden Bomb, Lucky Penny, Nickel – nie zużywaj ich, zanim nie sprawdzisz, czy nie nadają się do wartościowego crafta.

Warto też odkrywać secret roomy, ponieważ w przyszłości możemy w nich spawnować pedestal itemy, które często zamieniają się w bardzo wartościowe składniki.

Secret roomy mają tendencję do generowania pickupów takich jak bone heart, soul heart, eternal heart, lucky penny czy gold bomb, które mają wyższą wagę w systemie craftingu. Dzięki temu możemy uzyskać dostęp do silniejszych przedmiotów przy mniejszym nakładzie surowców.

Najlepiej eksplorować secret roomy jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem craftingu na piętrze, aby móc zaplanować cały worek z uwzględnieniem wartościowych składników.

Devil roomy oraz Angel roomy działają podobnie. Po wybraniu itemu dostajemy bardzo wartościowe komponenty. Najlepiej podczas run'a skupiać się na Angel roomach, ponieważ przedmioty te nie kosztują nas zdrowia.

Early game build (nieskończoność pickupów)

Aby zbreakować postać potrzebujemy tylko dwóch itemów:

• Piggy Bank po otrzymaniu obrażeń dostajemy coiny
• Scapular kiedy nasze zdrowie zejdzie do pół serduszka, dostajemy soul hearta. UWAGA: efekt ten jest raz na pokój, resetuje się kiedy wyjdziemy z niego. Także należy wychodzić i wchodzić do pokoju.

Wtedy możemy w nieskończoność otrzymywać obrażenia na parę sposobów (ognisko, kolce curse roomu). Należy jednak pamiętać, aby resetować efekt Scapular, by nie zginąć przypadkowo.

Zbieramy 8 coinów w Bag Of Crafting i craftujemy Portable Slot. Jest to item, który zawsze ma taką samą recepturę (8 coinów). Po scraftowaniu, craftujemy ponownie. Kiedy ponownie dostaniemy ten sam item, wypadają z niego normalne składniki, tak jakbyśmy po prostu podnieśli pedestal. Dzięki temu, mamy w teorii nieskończoność pickupów. Należy jednak podnieść poziom naszego break'a.

Craftujemy School Bag, D20 i Sharp Plug. Wtedy, w obojętnie jakim pokoju, spawnujemy coiny (Piggy Bank przez Sharp Plug), a następnie rolujemy w losowe pickupy lub skrzynki. Tutaj polecam wejść do Secret Roomu, aby mieć szansę na pedestal z skrzynki. Wtedy dostajemy najlepszą wartość pickupów i tak naprawdę możemy scraftować każdy item w grze.

Przedmioty warte craftingu i polecane trinkety

• Host Hat / Pyromaniac - Dzięki rolowaniu pickupów jest szansa, że pojawi się troll bomba która może nas przypadkowo zabić. Najlepiej uchronić się przed takim incydentem, właśnie przez te itemy (powodują odporność na wybuchy)

• Mitre - Zwiększa szanse na eternal hearty (większa wartość niż normalne serca)

• R Key - Pozwala zrestartować podejście. Dzięki temu przedmiotowi możemy podczas jednego run'a przejść każdego main bossa

• Gilded Key - Trinket, który sprawia, że każda skrzynka będzie złota. Powiększy nam to szansę na pedestal (szczególnie w Secret Roomach)

• Mama Mega! - Pozwala na przejście do Boss Rush lub Hush'a (nie musimy wtedy się spieszyć)

• Dad's Lost Coin - Upuszcza lucky penny, który przydaje się do craftowania wysokich tierów itemów.

• Birthright - Podwaja pickupy podczas podnoszenia pedestala. Bardzo dobry w late game.

• Luna - Dodaje 2 dodatkowe secret roomy na każde piętro. Więcej secret roomów = więcej okazji na wysokowartościowe pickupy.

• The Mind - Pokazuje cały rozkład mapy, razem z ikonkami. Pozwala na swobodne odkrywanie Secret Roomów i Super Secret Roomów.

Najważniejsze

Aby komfortowo grać Tainted Cain'em, należy zainstalować moda EID. Pozwala on na przeszukiwanie itemów gotowych do craftowania, wyszukiwanie danych przedmiotów (bo czasem jest 20k możliwych craftów), blokowanie interfejsu aby śledzić recepturę oraz bieżące refreshowanie receptur.
