There are games you play, enjoy, and move on from and then there’s Alan Wake 2. This is not just a game to me it’s a full blown cinematic experience that messes with your head in the best possible way. I don’t say this lightly ! this is the first game where I’ve completed every single achievement and earned the platinum trophy on PS 5 🥹🤌🏼. That milestone alone speaks volumes about how deeply this game gripped me from start to finish.
Slower, Longer, But Stronger
Slower, Longer, But Stronger
Let’s get this out of the way first: yes, Alan Wake 2 is slower than it’s predecessor. But that’s not a flaw, it’s intentional. The game trades the fast paced action of the original for a richer, more atmospheric survival horror experience. The chapters are longer, more layered, and visually arresting. From the eerie lighting to the shifting environments, every frame feels like it was designed to unsettle you. The line between gameplay and cinema blurs constantly. Sometimes, I just stopped playing to soak in the scene transitions, which hit with the kind of psychological punch you usually expect from horror films and not video games.
Remedy’s Storytelling at its Peak
Remedy’s Storytelling at its Peak
Remedy Entertainment has always been known for its narrative brilliance, but with Alan Wake 2, they’ve absolutely outdone themselves. The story is complex without being confusing, mysterious without being vague. It takes bold creative risks and rewards you for paying attention. Every small detail, from subtle environmental storytelling to fragmented dialogue, is there for a reason. The psychological depth is intense, you’re not just progressing through a game but instead you’re descending into a layered nightmare.
Scares That Stick With You
Scares That Stick With You
Now let’s talk horror. The jump scares in this game ? 😮💨 They’re not just thrown in for shock value. They’re designed with precision, and they work. There were times I genuinely yelped, especially during transitions that happen so suddenly your brain doesn’t have time to react. I had one particular moment where I flung my controller completely involuntarily (It’s A Good This Play On My Bed So That Saved My Controller From Any Damage 🥲). That’s how good the tension is. The horror is both physical and psychological, slowly crawling under your skin and staying there.
A Shift From Action to Survival Horror
A Shift From Action to Survival Horror
If Alan Wake 1 was more of an action thriller with supernatural elements, Alan Wake 2 is full blown survival horror. It leans into darkness both thematically and literally. You’re often navigating dimly lit environments with minimal resources, relying on instinct, timing, and clever use of your flashlight (Also Your Flashlight Does Not Recharge On It’s Own Like Alan Wake 1). The game reminded me of the best bits of Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and The Evil Within, but with a distinct voice of its own. It’s a horror experience that feels elevated less about blood and gore, and more about tension and atmosphere.
Surprisingly Long… and Surprisingly Great
Surprisingly Long… and Surprisingly Great
When I heard the game would take 25–30 hours to finish, I was skeptical. Most horror games keep things tight and short drag it out too long, and the tension fades. But Alan Wake 2 holds your attention throughout. There’s no filler. Every chapter, every beat in the story, feels intentional. Just when you think you’ve figured out the pattern, the game throws something completely unexpected your way. You never get comfortable and that’s exactly the point.
A Novel Like Structure That Works
A Novel Like Structure That Works
One of the most distinctive things about Alan Wake has always been its structure it plays out like a novel, and this sequel sticks to that design. Each chapter is like a new chapter in a book, propelling the story forward with focus and purpose. This is not an open world experience. There’s no sandbox, no unnecessary side quests. It’s linear and proud of it. And honestly, that’s what makes the pacing work so well. The game guides you with confidence from scene to scene, never wasting a moment.
Dual Protagonists, Double the Depth

Playing As Saga Anderson
Playing As Alan Wake
This time around, you don’t just play as Alan. The addition of FBI agent Saga Anderson adds a fresh perspective and even more complexity to the plot. Switching between Alan’s surreal, otherworldly journey in the Dark Place and Saga’s more grounded investigative path adds variety to the gameplay without losing focus. Saga’s Mind Place mechanic, where you piece together clues like a detective pinboard, is a brilliant design choice that breaks up the tension and adds layers to the mystery.
Atmosphere, Sound, And Style
Atmosphere, Sound, And Style
Visually, Alan Wake 2 is jaw dropping but it’s the sound design that truly elevates the horror. Play it with headphones and you’ll understand what I mean. The ambient noise, the subtle static, the whispers that come from just outside your field of vision it’s all perfectly crafted. I often found myself pausing the game just to breathe, especially after particularly intense sequences. The way sound and visuals work together here is unlike anything else I’ve experienced in gaming.
DLC Done Right
Even after wrapping up the main game, I wasn’t done. I dove straight into both DLC,s which is Night Springs and The Lake House and they both held up beautifully. They expand the world without overstaying their welcome and offer fresh gameplay experiences that tie back to the core narrative in surprising ways. I’ll be posting dedicated reviews and gameplay videos for these soon, because they deserve their own spotlight.
A Few Minor Flaws, But Nothing Game Breaking
Now, just to be fair Alan Wake 2 isn’t flawless. There were a few minor bugs, some frame drops in graphically intense scenes, and a couple of awkward animations. But none of these issues were like deal breakers for me. For a game this ambitious, these are forgivable hiccups.
One of the Best Games of 2023, Without a Doubt !
To wrap it all up: Alan Wake 2 isn’t just a worthy sequel it’s a genre defining experience. It blends narrative and gameplay in a way that very few games ever manage to do. It’s polished, bold, terrifying, and unforgettable. And personally, earning the platinum trophy on this one is going to remain one of my proudest gaming moments for a long time ❤️
If you love horror, storytelling, or just high-quality games that push boundaries Alan Wake 2 is a must play. Just remember to take breaks, maybe leave a light on 😂 and brace yourself for one hell of a ride.
For those who want to dive even deeper into the world of Alan Wake 2, I’ve got more on the way. Over the coming week, I’ll be dropping detailed chapter by chapter gameplay guides covering everything you need to know to navigate through the story, uncover hidden secrets, and survive the horrors ahead. So if you’re interested, stay tuned you won’t want to miss it !
