I love those games that are on the market for several years, you know that everyone says they are masterpieces and decades later you discover them again and it makes you rethink several things in the genre, many of these games surely for lack of interest or time end up passing over me without me trying them but you can be sure that I carry a mental list about each of those titles that in one way or another enter my pupils and I swear to play someday, you could say that FEZ is one of those titles, and better yet, is on the side of the industry that I like (Indies).
I had been playing it for a while and loved the mechanics of changing perspectives in a 2D looking game world, this game could be said to be a very respectful homage in every way, it has several nods to video game classics and even seems to be winking at you to play some of the best games from the 8 and 16 bit era, while, at the same time, it is breaking several of the traditional concepts of those types of games.
I think that's what I love about this development, for those who don't know FEZ is a platform game but above all it's a puzzle solving game with a very particular mechanic, our protagonist lives in a two dimensional world at the beginning of the adventure, think of the worlds of the first Mario Bros or Sonic, but all that changes when we are given the power of a small hat that allows us to move from two dimensions to 3 dimensions, suddenly everything that seemed flat now acquires a new dimension.
Now if we want we can change our dimensional plane along 4 perspectives, something that works wonderfully if we join the excellent level design that has this game in addition to the genius that applies in each challenge that proposes and the feeling of discovery and curiosity that has awakened me this game we have a game that is rounded on all sides.
As I said we will have the possibility to switch between dimensions, this can be a bit difficult to explain but just imagine that we will have 4 planes that we can switch freely with the A and D keys, each of these planes have their own objects and offer us a different perspective of the whole level, the game uses this premise to build some puzzles that benefit a lot from the perspective of each of the objects and platforms.
If for example we have a platform too far to jump from where we are we are always a key to change to a perspective where it can be a little closer, the game has very creative moments to use this mechanic, especially taking into account that throughout the game we will have to be looking for the pieces of the item that will allow us to restore calm to all dimensions, the plot is a bit of decoration to enjoy the levels.
There have certainly been some unforgettable levels, and the game doesn't just stick with the mechanics we are introduced to at the start but also builds on them and introduces us to other objects and mechanisms that make the puzzles a little more challenging, there are some platforms that can change dimension without us wanting to and can be tricky to pass over, many of the problems that appear in FEZ seem impossible at first glance, it's just a matter of sitting for a couple of minutes, trying out the perspectives and eventually we will get our Eureka! moment that lets us complete the puzzle.
Another point in favour of this game I think is the sense of calm that is often present in each of the levels, there is no lives system, although if we can die there is no real consequence or sense of distress in the levels, something I found relaxing and a motivator to sit down for a couple of minutes to solve some of the more challenging levels in the game, I also see this decision as the developers wanting us to experiment with the game, get it wrong and try again with no penalties. The game wanting us to figure it out, all in good time.
To all this we must add a huge amount of secrets, treasure chests and many winks, plus its aesthetics also very well maintained with a simply majestic stage designs, each with a day-night cycle so we never get bored of being in the same place, For me personally I think it's one of the best aesthetic designs I've seen in a platformer, the landscapes are incredible and together with the Zen music gives you a feeling of being in a relaxation zone, because I feel that in the end that's what the game wants, to relax and have a good time solving some puzzles.
FEZ is a game easy to love, and to recommend, it's an experience that gives a twist to the traditional platformer and builds a great puzzle game through a very well designed mechanic, I think what I felt most when playing this game is curiosity, and I think that's the most important thing, its world is one full of places to get lost in and explore every last space, it's a Feel Good game in every sense of the word, a must for the little ones in the house and for this writer, an absolute masterpiece.

Adoro esos juegos que estan en el mercado desde hace varios años, sabes que todo el mundo dice que son obras maestras y decadas despues descubres nuevamente y te hace replantearte varias cosas en el genero, muchos de estos juegos seguramente por falta de interes o de tiempo terminen pasando por encima de mi sin yo probarlos pero puedes estar seguro de que llevo una lista mental sobre cada uno de esos titulos que de un modo u otro entran en mis pupilas y juro jugar algun dia, se podria decir que FEZ es uno de esos titulos, y mejor aun, esta en el lado de la industria que me gusta (Indies).
Lo llevaba jugando un tiempo y ame la mecanica de cambiar las perspectivas en un mundo con la apariencia de un juego en dos dimensiones, este juego se podria decir que es un homenaje muy respetuoso en todos los sentidos, tiene varios guiños a clasicos de los videojuegos y hasta parece que te hace un guiño para que juegues algunos de los mejores juegos de la epoca de los 8 y 16 bits, mientras, al mismo tiempo, esta rompiendo varios de los conceptos tradicionales de ese tipo de juegos.
Creo que eso es lo que me encanta de este desarrollo, para los que no sepan FEZ es un juego de plataformas pero sobretodo es un juego de resolver rompecabezas con una mecanica muy particular, nuestro protagonista vive en un mundo de dos dimensiones al comienzo de la aventura, piensa en los mundos de los primeros Mario Bros o Sonic, pero todo eso cambia cuando nos otorgan el poder de un pequeño sombrero que nos permite pasar de las dos dimensiones a las 3 dimensiones, de repente todo lo que parecia plano ahora adquiere una nueva dimension.
Ahora si queremos podremos cambiar nuestro plano dimensional a lo largo de 4 perspectivas, algo que funciona de maravilla si juntamos el excelente diseño de niveles que tiene este juego ademas de la genialidad que aplica en cada desafio que propone y la sensacion de descubrimiento y curiosidad que me ha despertado este juego tenemos un juego que es redondo por todos lados.
Como ya dije tendremos la posibilidad para cambiar entre dimensiones, esto puede ser un poco dificil de explicar pero solo imaginate que tendremos 4 planos a los que podremos cambiar libremente con las teclas A y D, cada uno de estos planos tienen sus propios objetos y nos ofrecen una perspectiva diferente de todo el nivel, el juego usa esta premisa para construir unos rompecabezas que se benefician bastante de la perspectiva de cada uno de los objetos y plataformas.
Si por ejemplo tenemos una plataforma muy lejos para saltar desde donde estamos siempre estamos a una tecla de cambiar a una perspectiva en donde pueda estar un poco mas cerca, el juego tiene momentos muy creativos para usar esta mecanica, en especial tomando en cuenta que durante todo el juego tendremos que estar buscando los pedazos del item que nos va a permitir reestablecer la calma a todas las dimensiones, la trama es un poco de adorno para disfrutar de los niveles.
Ha habido niveles ciertamente inolvidables, y el juego no se mantiene solamente con la mecanica que nos introducen al comienzo sino que tambien construye sobre ella y nos presenta otros objetos y mecanismos que hacen un poco mas desafiante los rompecabezas, hay algunas plataformas que pueden cambiarnos de dimension sin que queramos y puede ser complicado pasar sobre ellas, muchos de los problemas que aparecen en FEZ parecen imposibles a primera vista, solo es cuestion de sentarse un par de minutos, probar con las perspectivas y eventualmente conseguiremos nuestros momento Eureka! que nos deja completar el puzle.
Creo que otro punto a favor de este juego es la sensacion de calma que a menudo hay en cada uno de los niveles, no hay un sistema de vidas, a pesar de que si podemos morir no hay una verdadera consecuencia o una sensacion de angustia en los niveles, algo que he considerado relajante y un motivante para sentarme un par de minutos a resolver algunos de los niveles mas desafiantes del juego, tambien considero esta decision como si los desarrolladores quisiesen que experimentemos con el juego, que nos equivoquemos y que lo intentemos nuevamente sin penalizaciones. El juego queriendo que lo descubramos, todo a su tiempo.
A todo esto hay que agregarle una cantidad enorme de secretos, cofres de tesoro y muchos guiños, ademas tambien de su estetica muy bien cuidada con unos diseños de escenarios simplemente majestuosos, cada uno con un ciclo de dia-noche para que nunca nos aburramos de estar en un mismo sitio, a mi personalmente me parece que es uno de los mejores diseños esteticos que he visto en un plataformas, los paisajes son increibles y junto a la musica Zen te da una sensacion de estar en una zona de relajacion, porque siento que al final eso es lo que quiere el juego, relajarnos y que tengamos un buen rato resolviendo algunos puzles.
FEZ es un juego facil de querer, y de recomendar, es una experiencia que le da un giro al tradicional juego de plataformas y construye un genial juego de rompecabezas a través de una mecanica muy bien diseñada, creo que lo que mas senti al jugar este juego es curiosidad, y creo que eso es lo mas importante, su mundo es uno lleno de sitios en los que perderse y explorar hasta el ultimo espacio, es un juego Feel Good en todo el sentido de la palabra, un obligatorio para los pequeños de la casa y para este escritor, una absoluta obra maestra.
