Es hora de tomarme un descanso de los post jugando juegos, esta semana vengo con algo un poco fuera de lo comun, desde hace un tiempo tengo esta idea de empezar a recolectar consolas en mi casa y ver hasta que punto pueden ser modificables, la comunidad de mods y homebrews esta creciendo año con año y hoy mas que nunca hay tutoriales de todo tipo para transformar estas consolas en verdaderos centros de entretenimiento, ya lo son, pero con estas modificaciones las consolas pasan a otro nivel, pudiendo desde ejecutar otros menus principales para una personalizacion sin igual hasta servir como estaciones para emular otras consolas pasadas, o simplemente como un repositorio de todas las ROMs que puedo conseguir online.
La comunidad de Mods esta creciendo muy aceleradamente con la gente volviendo a apreciar las viejas consolas de ayer, estuve viendo algunos videos en donde daban razones por las que comprar una Wii U o una Playstation 2 en 2023 puede ser una buena idea, y siempre he pensado que la Nintendo DS, una de mis consolas favoritas, se merece uno de esos post en donde investigue las capacidades que puede tener esta consola sin limitaciones, vamos a repasar.
Grandisimo catalogo de juegos
La DS no fue una de las consolas mas queridas del momento solo por ser revolucionaria de las consolas portatiles, su amplisimo catalogo de videojuegos que van desde los clasicos Firts Party que sacaba Nintendo a otras joyas escondidas lo han puesto en muchos spots como algunos de los mejores años de una consola portatil, y es que hay variedad de escoger, en lo personal creo que los juegos casuales y los de estrategia son los que van mejor con el tipo de consola que es la DS.
Aunque tambien puedo asegurar que de todos los generos que existen del videojuego siempre va a haber algo top en la DS, como ya saben algunos esta consola fue parte del plan de nintendo de atacar a Microsoft y Sony con el tema de la accesibilidad y de meter jugadores que nunca antes habian jugado a videojuegos precisamente con una consola con un catalogo inmenso, lleno de juegos que seguramente son malos, pero entre tanto siempre asoma por ahi una joya y eso es una constante en esta consola.
Posibilidades de Moddeo
La DS desde sus inicios ha tenigo una comunidad de modders bastante amplia, con los exploit que liberaron por primera vez la DS a los famosos cartuchos a los que podias simplemente meterle una SD y grabar todos los juegos que quisieras, he visto como desde hace algun tiempo como en algunos videos ponen el como ciertos homebrew le sacan el brillo a una consola de hace mas de 10 años, ha visto varios en donde incluso ponen a prueba la consola para ser un centro de emulacion de juegos un poco menos demandantes, no esperen que corra juegos de la Gamecube o de la Nintendo 64, pero para esos juegos pixelados de los años 80s y 90s si que puede ser perfecta como alternativa portatil, sobre todo por otro punto aparte que voy a mencionar.
Si me preguntaran que tan dificil es empezar a modificar estas consolas yo diria que hoy en dia hay mas que duficientes en tutoriales que explican todo el proceso tanto de liberar como empezar a experimentar sobre las posibilidades, hay un youtuber que me encanta que se encarga de bajar a tierra todos estos procesos, TheWizWiki, por si alguien quiere ir y verse algunos de los extensos videos que tiene sobre consolas como la DS o la 3DS que esta viendo un renacimiento en varios aspectos con esto del modding y todas las posibilidades que se pueden hacer en la consola.
Factor Nostalgia
La DS es una de esas consolas que me vieron crecer, desde muy pequeño tuve primero una version Lite y despues pase a una DSi (el cual apesto ya que no tenia el slot para cargar juegos de la Gameboy) pero siempre le tuve un cariño especial a los juegos y todo el tema de poder jugar juegos con amigos sin tener cartuchos del juego en algunos casos, muchos compañeros mios tenian las DS crackeadas desde el inicio ya que comprar los cartuchos era caro y en la mayoria de los casos no se conseguian en el pais, asi que muchas personas optaron por usar las famosisimas flashcards (R4 Gold o TT) y descargar los juegos en la red, algo de lo que estoy familiarizado y que hoy en dia es quiza la unica forma de jugar ciertos juegos que quiero jugar.
Portabilidad
2023 sera un año lleno de viajes para mi, y como no voy a parar de traer contenido ni tampoco de jugar pienso que alguna opcion portatil estaria genial para estar al tanto de que hablar en Hive y tambien por que no conectar nuevamente con esos juegos que tanto ame, estoy eligiendo aqui la DS por encima de su sucesora 3DS creo que por un tema de precios, pero justo ahora estoy investigando sobre que catalogo de juegos va mejor conmigo y tambien si estoy dispuesto a jugar nuevas experiencias ya que la 3DS es de esas consolas que no pude tener en su momento y me estoy pensando si soltar algun billete extra para jugar su catalogo.
La decision aun esta en el aire, la DS es una de esas consolas que son accesibles hoy en dia, estuve viendo en el mercado que estan por debajo de los 20$ usadas en muchos casos, y seguramente con algun fallo tipico en los botones (recuerdo que los gatillos L y R eran bastante molestos) pero nada que yo no pueda solucionar, ademas que hay bastante tutoriales en el internet para solucionar basicamente todo lo que pueda salir en el camino, aun asi la 3DS si se encuentra a un buen precio creo que podria ser tambien una candidata para este año agitado que tengo planeado.

The Mod community is growing very fast with people coming back to appreciate the old consoles of yesteryear, I was watching some videos where they gave reasons why buying a Wii U or Playstation 2 in 2023 might be a good idea, and I've always thought that the Nintendo DS, one of my favourite consoles, deserves one of those posts where I investigate the capabilities that this console can have without limitations, let's go over it.
Huge catalogue of games
The DS wasn't one of the most loved consoles of the moment just because it was revolutionary for handheld consoles, its vast catalogue of games ranging from the classic Firts Party games that Nintendo released to other hidden gems have put it in many spots as some of the best years of a handheld console, and there is a variety to choose from, personally I think casual games and strategy games are the ones that go best with the type of console that the DS is.
Although I can also assure that of all the existing video game genres there will always be something top on the DS, as some already know this console was part of Nintendo's plan to attack Microsoft and Sony with the theme of accessibility and to get players who had never played video games before precisely with a console with a huge catalog, full of games that are probably bad, but in the meantime there is always a jewel and that is a constant in this console.
Modding Possibilities
DS since its inception has had a fairly large modding community, with the exploits that first released the DS to the famous cartridges that you could just stick an SD card in and record all the games you wanted, I've seen some time ago how some videos show how certain homebrew games take the shine off a console that's over 10 years old, I've seen several where they even test the console to be an emulation centre for less demanding games, don't expect it to run games from the Gamecube or Nintendo 64, but for those pixelated games from the 80s and 90s it can be perfect as a portable alternative, especially because of another point I'm going to mention.
If you ask me how hard it is to start modding these consoles I would say that nowadays there are more than enough tutorials that explain the whole process both to unlock and start experimenting on the possibilities, there is a youtuber that I love that is responsible for bringing down to earth all these processes, TheWizWiki, if anyone wants to go and see some of the extensive videos you have on consoles like the DS or the 3DS that is seeing a renaissance in several aspects with this modding and all the possibilities that can be done on the console.
Nostalgia Factor
DS is one of those consoles that saw me grow up, from a very young age I first had a Lite version and then moved on to a DSi (which sucked as it didn't have the Gameboy slot to load games) but I always had a special fondness for the games and the whole issue of being able to play games with friends without having game cartridges in some cases, Many of my mates had the DS cracked from the start as buying the cartridges was expensive and in most cases not available in the country, so many people opted to use the famous flashcards (R4 Gold or TT) and download the games on the net, something I'm familiar with and that today is perhaps the only way to play certain games I want to play.
Portability
2023 will be a year full of travel for me, and as I'm not going to stop bringing content or even playing games I think some portable option would be great to keep up with what to talk about in Hive and also why not reconnect with those games I loved so much, I'm choosing here the DS over its successor 3DS I think because of a price issue, but right now I'm doing some research on which game catalogue suits me better and also if I'm willing to play new experiences since the 3DS is one of those consoles that I couldn't have at the time and I'm thinking if I'm going to drop some extra money to play its catalogue.
The decision is still up in the air, the DS is one of those consoles that are accessible nowadays, I was seeing in the market that are under 20$ used in many cases, and surely with some typical failure in the buttons (I remember that the L and R triggers were quite annoying) but nothing that I can not fix, plus there are enough tutorials on the internet to fix basically everything that can go on the road, even so the 3DS if it is at a good price I think it could also be a candidate for this hectic year that I have planned.
