Dank and Danker: A Pure Gameplay
Greetings everyone and welcome to another game review (skip to the bottom for the TLDR if you don't want to get into me hashing it out), today I'm going to be talking about Dark and Darker. Which is a free first person extraction game on Steam with a 30 dollar one time purchase to unlock the full gameplay. We will be reviewing both of them after extensive solo and party play. First looking at the basics that both modes have and then the key differences between them, what I like and what I don't, and why it's a one of a kind extraction experience (but why it might not be for everyone).
Gameplay: A PvPvE Dungeon Crawler Loop
The Basics: The Basics of gameplay are you go into the dungeon, loot stuff, and get out/go deeper into the dungeon to fight progressively more difficult enemies in different biomes. You equip your weapons and abilities in the lobby before the game starts and que into people with a similar gear range (0-24 etc.). Every character has their full range of ablities at level 20. Your main goal atm is to complete quests and acquire gold by selling your loot to the various merchants available (each has their own specialty they peddle in). The vendors each have quests that if you complete grant better available gear (both default and for sale). You must buy healing gear or have abilities to assist you through getting through the dungeon and buying the necessary supplies to complete what you set out to do (potions, bandages, pickaxes, etc.)
Noise matters: Each sound, broken pot, stepped on bone, and engaged creature all give away your position to anyone nearby who stops to listen. Rival parties definitely want to engage on people mid combat with a high level enemy or boss, or RIGHT after they've looted a room. So listening for incoming footsteps and silence are key to ambush instead of being the ambushee. This I view as a neat mechanic that adds a layer of immersion to the game, but this is part of what makes it an "oddball" in the extraction genre when combined with these OTHER mechanics. This mechanic is present in Hunt Showdown (which might be my favorite extraction shooter rn) but when combined with the other elements here give a unique sort of gamefeel. Thinking about which weapons you use and when to be the stealthiest is also fun to consider while building your character.
Light and Dark, and Darker: In each level there are various points of light and the player can equip various light sources (torches lanterns etc.). Light/darkness and being able to interact between the two and have means to illuminate and or darken rooms to your advantage can be critical. Fighting an enemy with limited arrows in a darkened area where they are more likely to miss can be engagement winning. This is something unique to dark and darker and I hope is something that they ideally add upon to existing abilities ie water ball puts out torches etc. to add more interactivity with this unique element. Maybe even a character that has a bonus/negative impact based on illumination.
Gameplay Elements: Hardcore/Normal
Normal: In normal lobbies players can potentially group up with each other to take down larger bosses on floors without needing to party up in matchmaking to do so. All of this is on a player to player basis as this mode is a more of a sandbox with no PvP. You can do whatever kooky thing you like with little consequence. Try not to be toxic I suppose
Hardcore: In hardcore your party MUST pvp ALL other encountered parties (or avoid them entirely), but NO friendly gameplay is permitted ie grouping/memeing etc. you also MUST be using gear and feel it's loss if you die (no squire defaults here).
Why it's not for everyone: Odd Amalgam
Before I give this a star review, I personally enjoy this game quite a bit. HOWEVER, I can understand why it doesn't sit right with everyone and I also get why some people have a mixed response when it comes to this. This game feels slow for an extraction game and like there isn't a driving objective or enclosing "battle royale" like feel. This game actually delivers only a Dungeon extraction PvPvE experience and it's a good one, but I get why many people aren't as enticed with the potential and current loop the way others are. It isn't for everybody, it's a bit of an odd duck amalgamate of various different extraction titles. The same way people may like turkey, chicken, and duck, but may not like A Turkducken. Dark and Darker is an extraction turkducken and I understand when people don't jive with it.
TLDR: How many Stars is it damn it?
I give this title 4/5 stars, it's a unique extraction title worth your time. But it's not for everyone and rather unforgiving (see above sections for details). Worth a try if you are into Dungeon and Dragons style PvPvE dungeon extraction, but will not itch various scratches if you are looking for something like "The Cycle" or "Apex Legends"etc.
Personally? I really enjoy this game and playing with friends has been ultra cool. It offers short dungeon gameplay loops and has a nice dungeon and dragon ambiance and aesthetic. I mostly play duos and trios with friends and viewers but I've been having a blast engaging with it in hardcore and normals on my own aswell. As mentioned in the above section though it is a bit of an odd combination of elements and something I'm not always in the mood for.

Dank and Danker: una jugabilidad pura
Saludos a todos y bienvenidos a otra reseña de juego (pasa al final para ver el resumen si no quieres que yo lo explique). Hoy voy a hablar sobre Dark and Darker, un juego de extracción en primera persona gratuito en Steam con una compra única de 30 dólares para desbloquear la jugabilidad completa. Los analizaremos a ambos después de jugarlos en solitario y en grupo. Primero, veremos los aspectos básicos de ambos modos y luego las diferencias clave entre ellos, lo que me gusta y lo que no, y por qué es una experiencia de extracción única (pero por qué puede que no sea para todos).
Jugabilidad: Un bucle de exploración de mazmorras PvPvE
Lo básico: Lo básico de la jugabilidad es que entras en la mazmorra, saqueas cosas y sales o te adentras más en la mazmorra para luchar contra enemigos cada vez más difíciles en diferentes biomas. Te equipas con tus armas y habilidades en el lobby antes de que comience el juego y te pones en cola con personas con un rango de equipo similar (0-24, etc.). Cada personaje tiene su rango completo de habilidades en el nivel 20. Tu objetivo principal en este momento es completar misiones y adquirir oro vendiendo tu botín a los distintos comerciantes disponibles (cada uno tiene su propia especialidad). Los vendedores tienen misiones que, si las completas, otorgan mejor equipo disponible (tanto el predeterminado como el que está a la venta). Debes comprar equipo de curación o tener habilidades que te ayuden a atravesar la mazmorra y comprar los suministros necesarios para completar lo que te propusiste hacer (pociones, vendas, picos, etc.)
El ruido importa: cada sonido, olla rota, hueso pisado y criatura atacada delatan tu posición a cualquiera que se detenga a escuchar cerca. Los grupos rivales definitivamente quieren atacar a las personas en medio del combate con un enemigo o jefe de alto nivel, o INMEDIATAMENTE después de que hayan saqueado una habitación. Por lo tanto, escuchar los pasos entrantes y el silencio son clave para emboscar en lugar de ser el emboscado. Considero que esta es una mecánica interesante que añade una capa de inmersión al juego, pero es parte de lo que la convierte en una "rara" en el género de extracción cuando se combina con estas OTRAS mecánicas. Esta mecánica está presente en Hunt Showdown (que podría ser mi juego de disparos de extracción favorito en este momento), pero cuando se combina con los otros elementos aquí, le da una sensación de juego única. Pensar en qué armas usar y cuándo ser más sigiloso también es divertido de considerar mientras creas tu personaje.
Luz y oscuridad, y más oscuridad: en cada nivel hay varios puntos de luz y el jugador puede equipar varias fuentes de luz (antorchas, linternas, etc.). La luz/oscuridad y la capacidad de interactuar entre ambas y tener medios para iluminar u oscurecer las habitaciones a su favor pueden ser fundamentales. Luchar contra un enemigo con flechas limitadas en un área oscura donde es más probable que fallen puede ser decisivo para ganar el enfrentamiento. Esto es algo exclusivo de Dark and Darker y espero que sea algo que idealmente agreguen a las habilidades existentes, por ejemplo, la bola de agua apaga antorchas, etc. para agregar más interactividad con este elemento único. Tal vez incluso un personaje que tenga un impacto adicional o negativo basado en la iluminación.
Elementos de juego: Hardcore/Normal
Normal: En los lobbies normales, los jugadores pueden agruparse (y a veces traicionarse) entre sí para derrotar a jefes más grandes en los pisos sin necesidad de formar grupos en el matchmaking para hacerlo. Todo esto es de jugador a jugador, ya que este modo es más bien un sandbox sin reglas estrictas. Puedes hacer lo que quieras.
Hardcore: En el modo Hardcore, tu grupo DEBE hacer JcJ contra TODOS los demás grupos que encuentres (o evitarlos por completo), pero NO se permite el juego amistoso, es decir, agruparse/crear memes, etc. También DEBES usar equipo y sentirte perdido si mueres (aquí no hay valores predeterminados para los escuderos).
Por qué no es para todos: Odd Amalgam
Antes de darle una reseña de estrellas, personalmente disfruto bastante de este juego. SIN EMBARGO, puedo entender por qué no le gusta a todo el mundo y también entiendo por qué algunas personas tienen una respuesta mixta cuando se trata de esto. Este juego se siente lento para un juego de extracción y como si no hubiera un objetivo de conducción o una sensación envolvente de "battle royale". En realidad, este juego solo ofrece una experiencia PvPvE de extracción de mazmorras y es buena, pero entiendo por qué a mucha gente no le atrae tanto el potencial y el bucle actual como a otros. No es para todo el mundo, es una amalgama un tanto extraña de varios títulos de extracción diferentes. De la misma forma que a la gente le puede gustar el pavo, el pollo y el pato, pero puede que no le guste A Turkducken. Dark and Darker es un Turkducken de extracción y entiendo cuando a la gente no le gusta.
TLDR: ¿Cuántas estrellas tiene, maldita sea?
Le doy a este título 4/5 estrellas, es un título de extracción único que vale la pena. Pero no es para todos y es bastante implacable (ver las secciones anteriores para más detalles). Vale la pena probarlo si te gusta la extracción de mazmorras PvPvE al estilo de Dungeon and Dragons, pero no te molestará si estás buscando algo como "The Cycle" o "Apex Legends", etc.
¿Personalmente? Realmente disfruto este juego y jugar con amigos ha sido genial. Ofrece bucles de juego de mazmorras cortos y tiene un ambiente y una estética agradables de mazmorras y dragones. Juego principalmente en dúos y tríos con amigos y espectadores, pero también me he estado divirtiendo mucho jugando en modo hardcore y normal por mi cuenta. Sin embargo, como se mencionó en la sección anterior, es una combinación un poco extraña de elementos y algo para lo que no siempre estoy de humor.
