After having played and reviewed this week a game based on Marvel's most emblematic characters, I have felt like playing other games from this comic book publisher, even games from the rival company DC Comics since over the years, especially in the Mega Drive and SNES era, there have been some very interesting games (and some very bad ones) based on the most famous superheroes of the comic book industry. But this time, instead of focusing on a superhero game, I thought of doing a review of a game based on one of the most ferocious, deadly and violent anti-heroes of Marvel: The Punisher, even more considering that this character is coming back in the new Daredevil series, so doing a review of a game about this character is more than perfect. The Punisher is a violent character, he can use anything as a weapon to eliminate or neutralize whoever is going to face him, so the favorite genre of video games for a character of this style is nothing more or less than a beat'em up, which was initially developed for arcade and later was made a version for Mega Drive.
I think this I'm going to say is not something to be surprised and is that it is known that the beat'em up games have a plot either null or something totally simple and this game is no exception and is that the plot of this game is based only on The Punisher and Nick Fury (in case we are going to play with a friend, we can use Nick Fury) go in search of Kingpin to eliminate him once and for all and as is common in such games to achieve this we must face a horde of enemies along several scenarios that will try to prevent us from fulfilling our purpose. Since I never played the arcade version, I will only talk about this Mega Drive version, as I have read that this version of consoles has a drop in graphic quality, something logical since it is known that many of the versions of games that come from the arcade, have a drop in quality, but personally I consider that The Punisher (Mega Drive) looks pretty good, the designs of the two main characters, which are the most classic versions of The Punisher and Nick Fury, look pretty good, have good details and are easily recognizable characters and very decent counterparts of the comics.
The character sprites are adequately sized, allowing you to appreciate their details, as well as having smooth and varied animations. There is a decent variety of enemy designs, from unique designs, to the classic resource of using the same sprite for an enemy but using a different coloring. This is a very important detail for a game of this genre since the most we are going to do in a beat'em up is to face many enemies per stage. The variety of scenarios is also high, from streets with different types of decoration, so there will be none alike even though they use elements in common, other places where we will be able to move will be sewers, mansions, three-way, factories and even forests, there really is a variety of very good scenarios and that each of these places have the right decorative elements to be achieved quite well on screen. Musically it is very good, although the music is overshadowed a bit due to the intense sound effects such as the screams that make the enemies to be eliminated, the blows that we impact on them, explosions or gunshots, which I think play a more important role in the sound section.
As expected and as I have already mentioned The Punisher (Mega Drive) is a fairly and quite conventional beat'em up, it doesn't really have an atypical gameplay to games of this style, since its control is very simple and easy to learn, but it is still a very entertaining game due to exactly that, since being so well done mechanically without much pretension in terms of mechanics and gameplay, makes it a quite enjoyable and entertaining game. The characters can hit with their fists, kick the air, throw enemies, use different types of weapons such as axes, swords, bats, guns and even a flamethrower, giving you a variety of options to eliminate anyone who gets in our way. In addition there will also be the classic items to cure the life bar of our character and objects that give us extra lives, if you have already played the most classic beat'em up of the genre, this game has all these elements and more, perhaps the most “different” if compared to the most classic is the use of firearms, but for everything else it turns out to be a pretty entertaining beat'em up.
Luego de haber jugado y reseñado esta semana un juego basado en los personajes más emblemáticos de Marvel me han dado ganas de jugar a otros juegos de esta editorial de comics, incluso juegos de la compañía rival DC Comics ya que a lo largo de los años, especialmente en la época de la Mega Drive y SNES han salido juegos muy interesantes (y otros muy malos) basados en los superhéroes más famosos de la industria del comic. Pero esta vez, en lugar de enfocarme en un juego de un superhéroe, se me ocurrió hacer una review de un juego basado en uno de los anti-héroes más feroces, mortales y violentes de Marvel: The Punisher, más aun teniendo en cuenta que este personaje va a volver en la nueva serie de Daredevil, por lo que hacer la review de un juego sobre este personaje es más que perfecto. The Punisher es un personaje violento, puede usar cualquier cosa como arma para eliminar o neutralizar a quien se le vaya a enfrentar, por lo que el género de videojuegos predilecto para un personaje de este estilo no es más ni menos que un beat'em up, el cual inicialmente fue desarrollado para árcades y posteriormente se hizo una version para Mega Drive.
Creo que esto que voy a decir no es algo para sorprenderse y es que es sabido que los juego del genero beat'em up cuentan con un argumento o bien sea nulo o algo totalmente sencillo y este juego no será la excepción y es que el argumento de este juego tan sola se basa en que The Punisher y Nick Fury (en caso de que vayamos a jugar con algún amigo, podremos usar a Nick Fury) van en la búsqueda de Kingpin para eliminarlo de una vez por todas y como es común en ese tipo de juegos para poder lograr esto debemos enfrentarnos a una horda de enemigos a lo largo de varios escenarios que intentaran evitar que cumplamos con nuestro propósito. Ya que nunca jugué la version árcade, tan solo hablaré de esta version de Mega Drive, ya que he leído que esta version de consolas cuenta con un bajón de calidad gráfica, algo lógico ya que es sabido que muchas de las versiones de juegos que provienen de los árcade, cuentan con una bajada de calidad, pero personalmente considero que The Punisher (Mega Drive) se ve bastante bien, los diseños de los dos protagonistas, los cuales son las versiones más clásicas de The Punisher y Nick Fury, se ven bastante bien, cuentan con detalles buenos y son personajes fácilmente reconocibles y contrapartes muy decentes de los comics.
Los sprites de los personajes son de tamaño adecuado, pudiendo así apreciar sus detalle, así como también cuentan con animaciones con gran fluidez y variadas. Hay una decente variedad de diseños de enemigos, desde diseños únicos, hasta el clásico recurso de usar un mismo sprite para un enemigo pero utilizar un coloreado distinto. Este es un detalle muy importante para un juego de genero ya que lo más que vamos a hacer en un beat'em up es enfrentarnos a muchos enemigos por escenario. La variedad de escenarios también es elevada, desde calles con distintos tipos de decoración, por lo que no habrá ninguna igual a pesar de que utilizan elementos en común, otros lugares a donde vamos a poder movernos serán alcantarillas, mansiones, vías de tres, fábricas y hasta en bosques, realmente hay una variedad de escenarios muy buena y que cada uno de estos lugares cuentan con los elementos decorativos adecuados como para que se logre bien bastante bien en pantalla. Musicalmente es muy bueno, aunque la música se ve opacada un poco debido a los intensos efectos de sonido como los gritos que hacen los enemigos al ser eliminados, los golpes que impactamos sobre ellos, explosiones o disparos, los cuales creo que juegan un papel más importante en el apartado sonoro.
Como es de esperar y como ya he mencionado The Punisher (Mega Drive) es un beat'em up bastante y bastante convencional, realmente no cuenta con una jugabilidad atípica a los juegos de este estilo, ya que su control es muy sencillo y fácil de aprender, pero sigue siendo un juego muy entretenido debido a exactamente eso, ya que al estar tan bien hecho mecánicamente sin mucha pretensión en términos de mecánicas y jugabilidad, lo hace un juego bastante disfrutable y entretenido. Los personajes pueden golpear con sus puños, dar patadas al aire, arrojar a los enemigos, usar distintos tipos de armas como hachas, espadas, bates, pistolas e incluso un lanzallamas, dándole así una gran variedad de opciones para poder eliminar a quien se nos interponga en el camino. Además también estarán los clásicos ítems de curar la barra de vida de nuestro personaje y objetos que nos dan vidas extras, si ya han jugado a los beat'em up más clásicos del género, este juego cuenta con todos esos elementos y más, quizás lo más “diferente” si se compara con los más clásicos es el uso de armas de fuego, pero por todo lo demás resulta ser un beat'em up bastante entretenido.
