Over time video games have been impacting the world as a perfect way to isolate from the outside world and connect with a magical adventure that may not be close to resembling real life but still manages to connect with us. I think it's because of the diversity of genres and it's no secret that all of us tend to have certain genres that usually tend to have us hooked by their visual and playable style that make us feel in a different way so to speak.
In my case, if you follow my blog closely you will know that one of my beginnings was the roguelike which is usually accompanied by beautiful visuals as well as art. Among some visuals, my favorite will always be those made in pixel art like games of the caliber of 'Chasm' which I brought before, another one I always wanted to play was Skul, a beautiful game that thanks to the Xbox game pass I was able to get my hands on it and finally give it a try and today I wanted to bring my impressions.
Skul: The Hero Slayer is a somewhat peculiar story, unlike many others, in it we embody an attack by the Humans against the Demon King which completely devastated the world where everyone lived, capturing and destroying those who were part of it. Among the survivors of the battalion is Skul, a small skeleton with simple abilities, but with great courage who sets out on an adventure to recover the kingdom that was taken from them.
And so it begins, an adventure full of difficulties, action, sadness, and emotions in general but above all with guaranteed fun. As you know the roguelike is a style of game is characterized by being completely random in its generation of maps, however in this title, we are dealing with a rogue-lite as its generation is not completely random in general, but it does present some features of the same which I will talk about later when we move forward, so let's get to it.
Then, hand in hand with the above in rogue's style each adventure we have can be defined in 'turns' style where each turn will end once all our life points reach 0, thus losing all the items and everything we have in that turn. Ah, I lie, except for one thing that is called the quartz which is an item that allows us at the beginning of each one to improve the statistics of our character which also remain and serve to make the next turn easier to allow us to advance in the story.
Related with the above I want to make a point on the level of difficulty that became for me each of these turns because the game itself is not like it tells you a level of difficulty to start each thing but it is true that it is not a game that usually put things easy. Each dungeon has its level of difficulty -come on, like every roguelike- and many times something that happened to me, as usual, can happen to you, which is to receive stupid hits that the only thing they will do is to hinder you.
Related to the above, on the way there will be infinite enemies which will be in charge of making the turn more complicated and chaotic, once we go forward each room will become a little bit worse. In it, we will find secret parts, enchanted dungeons, and at some point stores to leveling our character with the gold we collect which will be crucial to facing different bosses that will appear on the road later, which will also drop us good objects to continue advancing in the adventure of the little Skul.
So how do we handle all this being a little skeleton? Well, my dear friend, that's the beauty of Skul, because along the way we will find items that will allow us to give our adventure a great twist, either for better or worse. The most important of these is undoubtedly the skulls, which will give us the power of the skeleton or character in question and our abilities will change accordingly, affecting us for or against, so it will be important to choose the specific one.
A feeling of 'Deja Vu' that I got when I tried this title was something similar to when I played Dead Cells or The Binding of Isaac, the fact of progressing in it is something that feels like playing an arcade game constantly which makes it quite addictive. On most occasions the difficulty was becoming progressive and increasing which made me want to try a new turn each time to see how I was doing, it's pretty cool and that I liked a lot.
Of course, the issue of drops and most -not all- of the enemies tend to become quite random and generally, this is another feeling that I got to experience mostly with TBoI that on many occasions this factor used to limit you somewhat with your turns and their performance. However, as we know, in the worst conditions the best warriors are born, so it can be taken as a situation to bring out the skills you have been learning and deal with it.
And as you can't miss in my first feelings testing a game, I have to talk about the visual section of the title, in this game certainly one of the things that has a beautiful and worthy of the title sound. As we see we have a beautiful pixel art visual section that handles a somewhat varied color palette, as we can go from being in tenuous situations that merit somber colors to beautiful forests with warm colors that encourage us to go around.
In addition, this is complemented very well with the whole section of the colors with its music which I felt like music that seeks a balance between inspiring you with what could become an arcade and keeping you in a calm situation while you explore. Skul also tends to use it as a resource quite necessary to stick to the theme of emotions quite well, being able to even make you feel tense in situations where you are facing bosses which are one of the best battle music I've been able to hear.
Anyway, I think it's a game that I think is pretty good, it's a game that as I said can become quite addictive as most of the roguelike-lite games tend to do and that in general is a game that I found quite polished in general. Also, while the plot it handles is not a mega original plot I think the way it develops it progressively and how it twists the characters from it is also pretty good. A lo largo del tiempo los videojuegos han ido impactando en todo el mundo como una manera perfecta de poder aislarse del mundo exterior y conectar con una aventura mágica que quizás no esté cerca de parecerse a la vida real pero que de igual forma logra conectar con nosotros. Creo que es por la diversidad de géneros del mismo y es que para nadie es un secreto que todos nosotros solemos tener géneros que suelen tenernos enganchados por su estilo tanto visual y jugable.
En mi caso, si siguen mi blog de cerca sabrán que uno de mis comienzos fueron los roguelike los cuales suelen en su mayoría venir acompañados de apartados visuales hermosos como también artísticos. Entre algunas visuales mi preferida siempre serán las que son hechas en pixel como juegos del calibre de ‘Chasm’ el cual traje anteriormente, otro que quise jugar siempre fue Skul, un juego hermoso que gracias al gamepass de Xbox pude hacerme con él y por fin darle una probada.
Skul: The Hero Slayer es una historia un poco peculiar, a diferencia de muchas en ella encarnamos un ataque de parte de los Humanos hacia el Rey Demonio el cual fue algo que devastó por completo el mundo donde vivían todos, capturando y destruyendo a los que formaban parte de él. Entre los sobrevivientes del batallón está Skul, un pequeño esqueleto con simples habilidades, pero con grande valentía que se lanza a la aventura por recuperar el reino el cual se les fue arrebatado.
Y así empieza, una aventura llena de dificultades, acción, tristezas, emociones en general pero sobre todo con diversión asegurada. Como sabrán los roguelike son un estilo de juegos se caracteriza por ser completamente aleatorio en su generación de mapas, en cambio en este título tratamos de un roguelite ya que su generación no es completamente aleatoria en general, pero si presenta algunas características del mismo las cuales hablaré más adelante cuando avancemos, así que vamos.
Entonces, de la mano de lo anterior al estilo de los rogue’s cada aventura que tengamos podrá definirse en estilo de ‘vueltas’ donde cada vuelta acabará una vez todos nuestros puntos de vida lleguen a 0, perdiendo de esta manera todos los ítems y todo lo que tenemos en esa vuelta. Ah, miento, a excepción de una cosa que es llamada el cuarzo que es un item que nos permite en el inicio de cada una poder mejorar las estadísticas de nuestro personaje.
De la mano con esto quiero hacer inciso en el nivel de dificultad que llegó a ser para mi cada una de estas vueltas ya que el juego en sí no es como que te indique un nivel de dificultad a iniciar cada cosa pero si es cierto que no es un juego que suele ponerte las cosas sencillas. Cada mazmorra tiene su nivel de dificultad -vamos, como cada roguelike- y muchas veces te podrá suceder algo que me sucedía de forma usual que es el recibir golpes tontos que lo único que harán es entorpecerte.
De la mano de la anterior, en el camino habrá infinidades de enemigos los cuales se encargarán de irnos tornando cada vez la vuelta más complicada y caótica, una vez vayamos avanzando cada habitación se ira tornando un poquito peor. En el encontraremos partes secretas, mazmorras encantadas, y en algún punto tiendas para levear nuestro personaje con el oro que recolectemos el cual será crucial para enfrentar a distintos jefes que aparecerán en el camino mas adelante.
Entonces ¿Cómo manejamos todo esto siendo un pequeño esqueleto? Pues, mi querido amigo he ahí lo lindo de Skul ya que en el camino encontraremos ítems que no permitirán dar un gran giro a nuestra aventura ya sea para bien o mal. El más importante sin duda son las calaveras las cuales nos otorgarán el poder del esqueleto o personaje en cuestión y en torno a ello nuestras habilidades cambiarán afectándonos a favor o en contra, por lo que será importante elegir cual en específico.
Una sensación de ‘deja vú’ que me dio al probar este título fue algo similar a cuando jugué Dead Cells o The Binding of Isaac, el hecho de ir progresando en él es algo que se siente cada vez como jugar un arcade de forma constante lo cual lo hace bastante adictivo. En la mayoría de las ocasiones la dificultad se iba tornando progresiva y creciente lo que hacía que cada vez quisiera ir probando una nueva vuelta a ver cómo me iba, es algo que está bastante cool y que me gustó.
Claro está que el tema de los drops y la mayoría -no todos- de los enemigos suelen tornarse bastante aleatorios y generalmente esto es otra sensación que llegué a experimentar mayormente con TBoI que en muchas ocasiones ese factor solía limitarte algo con tus vueltas y su performance Sin embargo como sabemos, en las peores condiciones nacen los mejores guerreros, por lo que puede tomarse como situación de sacar a flote las habilidades que has aprendido y bregar con ello.
Y como no puede faltar en mis primeras sensaciones probando algún juego, tengo que hablar del apartado visual del título, en este juego sin duda una de las cosas que tiene es una hermosura y sonoridad digna del título. Como vemos tenemos un apartado visual pixel art hermoso el cual maneja una paleta de colores algo variadas, ya que podremos pasar de estar en situaciones tenues que ameritan colores sombríos a bosques hermosos con colores cálidos que nos incitan a ir por ahí.
Además, para ello se complementa muy bien con todo el apartado de los colores con su música la cual sentí como una música que busca un balance entre inspirarte lo que podría llegar a ser un arcade y mantenerte en una situación de calma a la vez que exploras. También Skul suele utilizarlo como un recurso bastante necesario para apegarlo al tema de las emociones bastante bien, pudiendo incluso llegar a hacerte sentir tenso en situaciones te enfrentas contra jefes.
En fin, creo que es un juego que me parece que está bastante bien, es un juego que como dije puede tornarse bastante adictivo como lo suelen hacer la mayoría de los roguelike-lite y que en general es un juego que me pareció bastante pulido en general. Además, si bien la trama que maneja no es una trama mega original creo que el cómo la desarrolla de forma progresiva y como torna a los personajes de ella también es algo que está bastante bien.
