The Mightier you are, the harder you fall. It’s a saying that couldn’t be more true. Often, people who think they are invincible have the hardest fall from grace. Today though I don’t want to talk about a person but rather about a company. A company that I was once a fan of, but after a half of decade of making bad decisions, I’m glad to see that their death may just be near. And that company is Ubisoft.
I’ve always been a fan of Ubisoft, but really fell in love with the company when I played Assassins Creed 1. There was just something that I found so cool about that game and the series that even to this day I can’t put my finger on.

Since then, I’ve played many other Ubi games and even find some of their most hated games to be my favorite. But over the past five years, the love I once had for this company started to waver until eventually there was nothing left and it seems that the company's actions may finally be catching up to them.
Ubisoft has two big titles coming out this year, one of those is the recently released Star Wars Outlaw, the other is the now delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Both of these games are riddled with controversy and ultimately resulted in Ubisoft’s stock dropping by 10% over two days, after the launch of Outlaws, making Ubisoft’s stock drop by 54% overall for the year.

The Controversy
The controversy for Outlaws is a bit more stupid, but understandable than Shadows. Outlaws controversy surrounds the fact that the protagonist is a woman and that Sweet Baby Inc is still a consultation studio for Ubisoft.
At face value this may seem stupid but if you know anything about the DEI politics in the video game industry, especially at Ubisoft, then you’d know it’s not as stupid as it sounds. People were concerned that this would be another “strong female” character that is often getting shoved down people’s throat. Was she, though? I don’t know.
I never played the game so I can’t tell you how certain politics play in the game or whether they’re even included, but what I can tell you is that the game launched in a horrible state. The AI was a joke, the gameplay repetitive, and the moral choices all gave you the same choice, from what I hear.And then there was AC Shadows. The controversy in this game is rightly founded. Ubisoft is trying to pull a Netflix Cleopatra by rewriting history in a major way. They took a "this might have happened” event and are trying to make it fact. That event is Yasuke, one of the protagonist of the game, a black samurai, being an actual samurai while history is very vague about this idea.

It got to the point where Ubisoft had “historians” coming out saying Yasuke was a samurai and even Wikipedia editing their page to back this up. When in reality there was a chance Yasuke could have been one since he was recorded as being a retainer, and the only battle he ever fought in was the one where he surrendered himself to the enemy.
The reason for this controversy is only obvious. In a game that takes place in japan we should be playing as two japan protagonist not one japan protagonist and arguably the only black man in Japan at the time. It just smells like Sweet Baby Inc because this is the type of thing that CEO of Sweet Baby Inc Kim Belair tries to promote. Even telling developers to use threats to have their studios includes “diverse” characters.

The End was coming for a long time
Politics aside, Ubisoft’s downfall has been a long time coming. The company is famous for making the same game over and over again, just with a different story. Since the success of AC2, we’ve seen Ubisoft giving their other franchise the assassin’s creed treatment. With the farcy games from 3 and onward having towers you need to climb in order to clear a fog of war map.
And then we have them just releasing lacklustre games. Skulls and Bones a game that was hyped up for years. A game that people hoped would take one of the funnest parts of AC black flag and turn it into a game of its own released last Feb and like Outlaws it was just a complete shit show.

The kicker out of this is that Ubisoft described the game as a quadruple A game. Unless those A’s stand for Ass, Ass, Ass, and Ass, Ubisoft is sorely mistaken.

And then there is the idiotic comments Ubisofts spokespersons have said there’s too many to go over so I’m just going to go over two of them. The first one is
“ So it's about feeling comfortable with not owning your game.”
This was said during an interview talking Ubisoft Plus. Ubisoft believes that gamers should get used to not actually owning their games. To giving companies like Ubisoft all the power to revoke your access to the games you paid for. This becomes all the more laughable when you know about Ubisoft’s history with online content.
Ubisoft has been known to “revoke” access to content that gamers already paid for with the first happening with the DLCs for multiple franchises. You could no longer buy these DLCs and in some cases were unable to access them if you didn’t have them downloaded on your console.

More recently there was the debacle with The Crew that saw Ubisoft axing the online only game, removing it from people’s Ubisoft accounts, and making the game unplayable for those who owned a physical copy of the game. It got so bad that in certain places store fronts need to make it known that when you buy a digital game you don't actually own it.

This is just a way of Ubisoft once again to dodge responsiblities for their failures. There are plenty of mediocre games out that people do like. Not every game needs to be a Baldur's Gate 3. But what gamers do want is generally a game that is better than the game that came before it, if it belongs to a franchise. Which the majority of Ubi games do belong to bigger franchises.

Skull and Bones for example was hyped up to be a game based on AC Blac Flag ship combat gameplay but only better when in reality it was a lot worst. The Far Cry series hasn't done anything new since Far Cry 4. And in more recent times people are avoiding these medoicre games that Ubisoft is putting out because of the people that Ubisoft associates with such as Sweet Baby Inc.
Ubisoft hasn't realeased a great, or even medoicre game for quite some time (Since pre covid, IMHO). And this is there way of rationializing why their products aren't being well recieved like they use to be. The reality is Ubisoft has lost its touch and refuses to listen to their fans and instead are listening to companies like Sweet Baby Inc.

The end result
The end result is what you’d expect it to be. Fans turning their back on the company that turned their back on them a long time ago. I don’t think there’s a redemption story in Ubisoft.
Shortly after the stock dropped, rumors began spreading the gaming conglomerate Tencent was interested in buying the company out. Tencent currently holds a 10% stake in the company but are talking about possibly buying the company out and taking it private. After this news broke, Ubi’s stock recovered.
Maybe this is what Ubisoft needs, or maybe it will be the final straw that kills the company. Seeing what Tencent DEI policies are, I’d wager it would be the later. All I know is that this isn’t a company I’ll mourn because the Ubisoft of the past has been dead for a very long time.
