What’s up, guys? Today I’m bringing you a story of murder “caused” by a video game. The case I am going to talk about is one I’ve talked about before in one of my videos criticising the media for blaming games for these types of actions. The Halo series is a series every gamer knows, and number 3 is one of the games that are often talked about, but not all the talks are good. In September 2007, 16-year-old Daniel Petric had killed his mother and shot his father in the head over this game. I still remember my mother asking me if I had that game ( Not a huge fan of halo, so I didn’t) and once I told her no, she told me that the one game I wasn’t allowed to play was that, as the media portrayed the game as the culprit. But what happened? What events unfolded that led up to this incident?
Daniel Petric was the son of a pastor. Video games were never banned in his household. In fact, his father Mark would often play games with his son. But the one game he refused to buy or to let his son buy was Halo 3, due to its rating. But Daniel wasn’t taking no for an answer. One night when everyone was in bed, he snuck out of his bedroom window, went to the local game store and bought the game.

He had the game for a while before his father eventually found out that he had the game. Immediately, the father took the game and locked it away in his safe beside his pistol. Daniel wasn’t too happy about the whole thing, but after a while, everything seemed to change.
One evening, Daniel walked downstairs to the living room, where his parents were sitting on the couch waiting for their daughter and her husband. With his hands behind his back, he had told both his mother and father to close their eyes that he had a surprise for them. The two, not having anything to be suspicious about, did just that.
4 shots rang out. Daniel had just shot his mother three times, killing her, and shot his father in the head, leaving him in serious condition, with his father's own gun. Seeing that his father was still alive, albeit just by a string. He tried giving him the gun by saying “Hey Dad, here’s your gun. Take it.”. Mark would later say he knew what he was trying to do, and kept refusing to take the gun with the little life he had left. Daniel was trying to make the incident look like a Murder-Suicide.
The only thing that saved Mark’s life was his daughter and son-in-law arriving to watch a baseball game. They knocked on the door first, and Daniel answered, trying to convince them not to come in by saying his parents just had a huge fight, but after hearing a groan, they pushed their way in and saw the scene.
Through a shattered jaw, Mark was able to tell his daughter that his son was the one behind it. But Daniel tried to blame it all on his father. When Mark’s daughter went to call the cops, Daniel went to grab the gun from the couch, which his brother-in-law quickly took from him. He would then flee from the house with Halo 3.
After everything is said and done, Daniel would be sentenced to 23 years in prison. His father had to be put into a medically induced coma, and in that time missed his own wife’s funeral. He wouldn’t even find out that his wife had died until he got out of it.

Mark said that he wanted his son to die, that he prayed to god that he would never see him again. The only thing he had in his heart was pure hatred, but that was until his faith broke through. Through his faith, he was able to forgive his son.
Mark says that his son never showed any signs of teenage violence and believes that this game was the reason why he did what he did. And for someone that had suffered like Mark, I’m fine with him thinking that. From what I’ve read, Mark seems like a stand-up guy. It’s just a shame something like this had to happen to him.

Sonaron 4 disparos. Daniel acababa de disparar tres veces a su madre, matándola, y le disparó a su padre en la cabeza, dejándolo en estado grave. Al ver que su padre todavía estaba vivo, aunque solo por una cuerda. Trató de darle el arma diciendo: “Oye papá, aquí está tu arma. Tómalo.". Mark diría más tarde que sabía lo que estaba tratando de hacer y siguió negándose a tomar el arma con la poca vida que le quedaba. Daniel estaba tratando de hacer que el incidente pareciera un asesinato-suicidio.
Lo único que salvó la vida de Mark fue que su hija y su yerno llegaron para ver un partido de béisbol. Tocaron la puerta primero y Daniel respondió, tratando de convencerlos de que no entraran ya que sus padres acababan de tener una gran pelea, pero después de escuchar un gemido, se abrieron paso y vieron la escena.
A través de una mandíbula destrozada, Mark pudo decirle a su hija que su hijo era el que estaba detrás. Pero Daniel trató de echarle la culpa de todo a su padre. Cuando la hija de Mark fue a llamar a la policía, Daniel fue a buscar el arma del sofá, que su cuñado rápidamente le quitó. Luego huiría de la casa con Halo 3.
Después de todo dicho y hecho, Daniel sería condenado a 23 años de prisión. Su padre tuvo que ser puesto en coma inducido médicamente y en ese tiempo se perdió el funeral de su propia esposa. Ni siquiera se enteraría de que su esposa había muerto hasta que saliera de eso.
Mark dijo que quería que su hijo muriera, que rezaba a Dios para que nunca lo volviera a ver. Lo único que tenía en su corazón era puro odio, pero eso fue hasta que su fe se abrió paso. A través de su fe, pudo perdonar a su hijo.
Mark dice que su hijo nunca mostró signos de violencia adolescente y cree que este juego fue la razón por la que hizo lo que hizo. Y para alguien que ha sufrido como Mark, estoy bien con él pensando eso. Por lo que he leído, Mark parece un tipo de pie. Es una pena que algo así le haya sucedido.
