What’s going on my fellow geeks and geekettes? I’ve been thinking of a subject lately (IKR GamerGeek thinking, what a surprise?) that I would like to write about. And that’s about games that release as bug filled messes. Now when I say bug filled messes, I am not talking about games like Skyrim, who had a crap ton of bugs on release but was still playable, but rather the No Man’s Skys of the video game world where the game was buggy, was falsely sold to fans, and was generally received poorly and received a ton of backlash.
The number one game that comes to mind when I think about games that were buggy messes/ semi unplayable, has to be Homefront : The Revolution. Playing this game at launch was difficult. I would get stuck a bunch of times (literally stuck), the combat was bugged as hell, some of the side activities were unable to be finished because of said bugs, and some trophies were unlockable, which as a trophy hunter, grinded my gears. Homefront: The Revolution got a lot of hate when it first came out, hell it still does somewhat today because there are still a lot of glitches in the game, but it is with good reason.
Homefront wasn’t this big release title that went all out in marketing. In fact, the only reason I even knew about it was seeing it on the PS Store one day, and loving a good revolution story, I decided to buy it. And I loved it, yes that’s right, I loved it. Often times if I think a story is good enough, I’ll look past all the bad stuff, and this was one of those cases. But even today, the game still has a fair amount of bugs that should have been long gone by now.
The next game I mentioned in the first paragraph and that’s No Man’s Sky. To this day I haven’t played the game, but you had to be living under a rock to not have heard of the controversy about the game’s release. Without going into too much detail, No Man’s Sky was only a fraction of what the game was supposed to be. Many mechanics that the CEO Sean Murray had promised and hyped up would be in the game weren’t. And even when the developers had told him that these mechanics wouldn’t be in the game, he still went ahead to hype them up. IIRC, the devs didn’t even know the game was “supposed” to have multiplayer until Sean Murray said so in an interview.

Over the years, No Man’s Sky released updates and eventually became the thing it was promised to be. But why are fans okay with this? A couple of years back, when the game became what it was promised to be, they relabelled the game as No Man’s Sky Next and sold it at full price. Fans often overlook the rocky start it had, and now the game gets praises from fans and critics alike.
And then we have Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk had a rocky start, too. The game was delayed multiple times and by the end of it; it was released, riddled with bugs. Cyberpunk, like No Man’s Sky, was hyped up to be this amazing game with Keanu Reeves doing a full Mocap for Johnny Silverhand, a character that is stuck inside of V’s head. The game looked like it was going to be amazing, but then it released.
People were furious. I often say the same people complaining about the release, and/or current state of Cyberpunk 2077 are the same people who are now praising No Man’s Sky. I mean, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t be praising a game like No Man’s Sky. That wasn’t a game that it was originally promised to be, yet be dumping on another one that is in the same predicament.
I’m going to play devil’s advocate here, and let my inner fanboy show, but I think in the case of Cyberpunk 2077 releasing with bugs and missing content, was a lot more acceptable than the release of No Man’s Sky. I personally think that the hole No Man’s Sky was in was dug by Sean Murray, while with Cyberpunk 2077, it was dug with the help of fans.
Cyberpunk 2077 shouldn’t have released in the state it did, but I can understand why it did. Fans were already angry at the multiple delays the game faced, and no doubt about it, the studio probably felt backed into a corner by investors to get the game out there.
I never actually experienced the game until a few months ago. In fact, I was able to get a day one edition. And I loved it. I ran into a few annoying bugs, but I absolutely loved the game. I think with Cyberpunk 2077 the problems were more hyped up than they actually were, which caused/causes people to avoid the game.
So what is the big issue about these issues? You already know the answer. They hinder the game. They sell a “false product”. With No Man’s Sky, it was stated that it would have multiplayer and people were actually looking for their friends during the release of the game, only to figure out that promise was a lie.
With CyberPunk 2077, there was a lot of content missing along with the game being riddled with bugs, and some reports of the game not being able to run on last gen console. And in the case of Homefront, well, even though I liked the game, I’d have to be blind to see that it wasn’t a mess.
When developers get comfortable releasing games like this, it presents a huge problem. They sell a completely different game and then just add features that were originally promised through patches, and it’s a very shady practise, which is why I think no one should be praising Hello Games for making No Man’s Sky into the game into what it was originally promised to be, just as I think no one should praise Cyberpunk 2077, if they end up doing the same.

I’m going to leave you with this final question, when it comes to buggy/incomplete games, who is at fault? Sure, it’s easy to say the developers because they were the ones who created the game, but don’t us gamers hold some responsibility? Some of us get so excited about a game that we want it right then and now, and that puts unnecessary pressure on the developers to get the game released. Everyone hates buggy games, but we need to remember that the people behind the game are human, just like us, and no matter how bad the state of the game is, you shouldn’t wish any harm on them. This is only a few games among a long list that had issues on launch. The titles I included I decided to do so as they are the more "recent" examples. I hope you enjoyed this article! Personalmente, creo que el agujero en el que se encontraba No Man's Sky fue excavado por Sean Murray, mientras que con Cyberpunk 2077, fue excavado con la ayuda de los fans.

Todos odian los juegos con errores, pero debemos recordar que las personas detrás del juego son humanos, como nosotros, y no importa cuán malo sea el estado del juego, no debes desearles ningún daño. Estos son solo algunos juegos entre una larga lista que tuvo problemas en el lanzamiento.
