Lately I’ve been thinking of a few ideas for lore videos for my second youtube channel. Or more correctly, thinking of games to do lore videos on. That is how I found myself digging out my old 360 to play Saints Row.
Now when I say my 360 is old, I mean it is old. I got it around the same time Saints Row 3 came out, and that would have been around 2011. Thanks to me having an issue with the 360 around the time AC3 came out ( that’s right, gamergeek tracks his years by games released that year,) I had to take the shell off of it to access the disk drive, and since then it’s remained off.
This caused a few problems, mostly the disk driver becoming rusted shut. But sure enough, the ole 360 still works. So after buying a digital copy of SR I was ready for some gaming or so I thought.
After spending hours of getting the 360 setup, finding all the wires, finding my capture card, hooking the internet up to it, I ran into a controller issue. The joystick was sticking. I got this controller off of my awesome nephew who is around 8 or so, so I decided to inspect the joystick for anything that could be clogging it. And sure enough I found some black sticky substance.
Now a good ole gamer geek often calls himself half of a retard because it’s the truth. I either do things I know that are idiotic with the hopes of it working out, or I do things that I don’t not realize that are idiotic that turn out to be idiotic. Oh, there’s also the third thing which is me doing idiotic things because they are idiotic, that’s how I found myself strapping a dog shock collar on myself not once, not twice, but three times back to back. But that’s a story for another day.
I went to grab some Isopropyl alcohol I keep around for the PC to clean the controller off, and that’s when I remembered I had none left. But I did have all purpose cleaner. I knew I shouldn’t have used it, considering that there was a good chance that the cleaner would leak into the controller, but I decided to bite the bullet, and the bullet bit back.

At first the A button didn’t work, and then it did, but the B and Y button stopped working so I decided to throw the controller in some rice and start looking online for a replacement controller, and what I found was just nuts.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Microsoft stopped making 360 controllers a while back, and that has led to the rise of crappy knock off brands. Looking at amazon you can see a lot of them, but when it comes to these brands I am extra cautious as I once bought a knock off PS3 controller from there that turned out to be half the size of an official one. And after looking at the reviews for these controllers, my skepticism only grew. There were reviews about how they felt cheap, small, and just were not overall good.
So my next stop was ebay to get an official one and some people were charging quite a bit for them. A used 360 controller was going for around 30 bucks, which wouldn’t be that bad, but most of these controllers would take a month to get in which wouldn’t suit me. If I wanted to wait for any period of time I’d just head into the city and go to a pawn shop. That was something I was willing to do but it was a last resort.
But thankfully I didn’t need to do that as the rice trick worked. The next morning I took the controller out and it worked perfectly, except for the rattling of a few grains of rice that found its way inside of it.
And with that little story out of the way, it brings me to the point of this article, which is outdated gaming equipment. Compared to a NES, the 360 is practically new, but compared to the Xbox Series X, well it’s not. And with new console generations we often see the older generations wither away to dust.
But that isn’t anything surprising or it shouldn’t be anything to hate because it’s just the natural progression of things. We can’t expect game companies to churn out xbox series x games for the 360 for a few reasons, the big one being that the 360 wouldn’t support those types of games. Hell I remember when a 250 gig xbox harddrive could fit dozens of games on it, now your average game is around 60 gigs without any updates.
But when it comes to hardware such as controllers, I think it’s a bit different. There are always going to be collectors and there are going to be people who still want to play the 360 whether this is for nostalgia reasons or otherwise. Hell, there are a lot of people in underdeveloped countries that still play these older consoles because that’s what they can afford. I remember when I went to Cuba, I met with the cousin of one of my brother's coworkers who was ecstatic to show us his room and his xbox 360, even though by that time it was old tech.
I bring this up because I do think there is still money to be made in 360 accessories, or official 360 accessories such as controllers. Sure it might not be as much as before but it might be worthwhile. Not a lot of people want to buy these off brand controllers because frankly they can’t be trusted.
If Microsoft wanted to go the lazy way about it, they wouldn’t even need to make controllers themselves instead contracting them out to another company and just sticking a microsoft approved seal on it.
Nowadays, like many older gen game consoles, the only way to buy controllers for the 360 is either second hand or knock off brands, and each has more downs than they do ups, especially when you’re paying $30+.

Ahora, cuando digo que mi 360 es viejo, quiero decir que es viejo. Lo obtuve casi al mismo tiempo que salió Saints Row 3, y eso habría sido alrededor de 2011. Y con esa pequeña historia fuera del camino, me lleva al punto de este artículo, que es un equipo de juego obsoleto. Comparada con una NES, la 360 es prácticamente nueva, pero comparada con la Xbox Series X, pues no lo es. Y con las nuevas generaciones de consolas, a menudo vemos que las generaciones anteriores se convierten en polvo.
Pero eso no es nada sorprendente o no debería ser algo para odiar porque es solo la progresión natural de las cosas. No podemos esperar que las compañías de juegos produzcan juegos de xbox series x para el 360 por varias razones, la principal es que el 360 no admitiría ese tipo de juegos. Demonios, recuerdo cuando un disco duro xbox de 250 gigas podía contener docenas de juegos, ahora su juego promedio es de alrededor de 60 gigas sin ninguna actualización.
Pero cuando se trata de hardware como los controladores, creo que es un poco diferente. Siempre habrá coleccionables y habrá gente que todavía quiera jugar al 360, ya sea por nostalgia o por otros motivos. Demonios, hay mucha gente en países subdesarrollados que todavía juegan estas consolas antiguas porque eso es lo que pueden pagar. Recuerdo cuando fui a Cuba, me encontré con el primo de uno de los compañeros de trabajo de mi hermano que estaba encantado de mostrarnos su habitación y su xbox 360, aunque para ese entonces era tecnología antigua.
Menciono esto porque creo que todavía se puede ganar dinero con los accesorios 360, o con los accesorios oficiales de 360, como los controladores. Claro que puede que no sea tanto como antes, pero debe valer la pena. No mucha gente quiere comprar estos controladores de marca porque, francamente, no se puede confiar en ellos.
Si Microsoft quisiera ir de la manera perezosa al respecto, ni siquiera tendrían que hacer los controladores ellos mismos, sino contratarlos con otra compañía y simplemente pegarles un sello aprobado por Microsoft.
Hoy en día, como muchas consolas de juegos de generaciones anteriores, la única forma de comprar controladores para el 360 es de segunda mano o de marca, y cada uno tiene más inconvenientes que beneficios, especialmente cuando pagas más de $ 30.
