Beware of spoilers if you haven’t played ME trilogy, and if you haven’t WHAT ARE YOU DOING READING THIS GO PLAY IT!
There has been very little information given out about Mass Effect 5. Any veteran of the series would have felt a tinge of excitement when they saw Liara in the first trailer released for it. In this article I’m going to give my predications about the game, and where it could go.
Liara, her ties to Command Sheperd go beyond that of friendship, even if you decided not to romance her. In ME2 she risked her own life to find Sheperd’s body and bring them to Cerberus to undergo the Lazarus project, which ended with Sheperd’s revival after their death in the intro of ME2. So it is only fitting that it is her once again looking for them. At the end of ME3 if you choose destroy and have the maximum readiness level, you’re greeted to a scene where an ash covered(?) figure wearing N7 stands frozen like a stone, only for them to take a breath at the last second. Players have speculated on what this meant, if Sheperd was truly alive or if it was just some cruel joke played by the devs. The devs have come out and said that Sheperd is died, but this was years ago. Personally, I think he is still alive, but is suffering from some form of amnesia or perhaps some side effect from using the crucible.
In the poster below, we see a vehicle near a crater. At first glance it may not look like anything, but if you take a second to truly look, you can see a few things. The area in the image is shaped like a Geth, with the crater being its eye. And you can see the bodies of dead Geth around the crater if you zoom in. So what could this mean? People have speculated that this game will tie into Andromeda for a couple of reasons. The main one being that the arks were built in Geth space, so it’s possible that the Geth has something to do with the Initiative and some people believe that the benefactor is none other than a Geth. Personally, I’m drawing a blank when it comes to this, but what I do know is that if the Geth are still around, then they weren’t destroyed, and since in the teaser trailer we don’t see Liara with green eyes, it’s safe to assume that the Synthesis ending didn’t happen. I think Bioware is going to make the destroy ending; the canonical ending for the ME trilogy.
So what are my thoughts about ME5? I strongly believe that Liara is looking for Sheperd. I don’t think a lot of time has passed since the Reaper invasion. I do believe it’s possible we could see ME 5 take place 10-20 years after the destruction of the Reapers, but I do not believe in the theory that it takes place hundreds of years later. When I saw the Geth poster, the first thing I thought about was that they were offering Sheperd refuge. Thanks to Legion, we know the Geth sees Sheperd as a hero, so it is possible that they were protecting them while he mended and that some sort of rogue faction got wind of where he was. I’ve been saying for years, that it would be awesome if we played as an unknown solider after the events of ME 3, who is suffering from memory loss and they go around trying to put the galaxy back together the victory over the Reapers, only to find out that they’re Commander Sheperd. Looking at it from a realistic standpoint, or at least realistic from a video game perspective. This could be the case. Sheperd would have been severely injured if he survived the events of the crucible, so much so that they might be unrecognizable and need extensive surgery. Honestly, I’d love to explore the galaxy after the events of the crucible because it would be a completely different landscape.
