Have you ever stopped to think what Baldur's Gate might be like if every character in the game was a super hero with an obnoxious, easy to hate personality? Wonder no more. Introducing Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich; which does nothing but remind me of the poor narrative design and literal paper thin veneer of suspending reality of comic books.
Because that's exactly what Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich is. An outlandish story of established heroes and heroines, fighting obligatory bad guys (with no real motive for being bad other than some questionable authority figure indicating that they are); wrapped around a minor system of character progression and levels that are filled with foes, secrets, and power ups.
I played the first four missions of the game before I felt like taking a nap. I didn't find any of the characters likeable; I found the story unfulfilling, and the game's respect for my intelligence as a player of said game to be completely ignored, with simple game mechanics; non-existent difficulty, and generally speaking, a banal gameplay experience.
I will say some positive words, too. It took about 2 hours of an evening away from me; so there's some entertainment value that I derived; but much like seeing a terrible film, there's no way I'm getting that time back.
I understand that this game was released many, many years ago - and is deserving of a more gentle, perhaps nostalgic view; but its 2023, and I'm not going to try and gratify an audience that may be nostalgic for something that I'm experiencing for the first time; particularly so when this experience hasn't changed my life or enriched it, merely eroded and chiselled away it.
On the other side of the coin, this title made me nostalgic for the games of the 90s, SiN, No One Lives for Forever, and other such titles with strong female protagonists.
