Although one should not underestimate the problem of the isolation to which they lead as a means of disengagement or complete evasion from the rest of the world, a prevailing theory in the late 1990s, one must accept the fact that video games in general - and more so in extreme cases such as the compulsory silencing due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic - are a very good means of socialisation.
There are two fundamental tools that make this socialisation through video games possible. One is chat and the other is the connection through a voice channel allowing game participants to talk to each other as if they were in a real world room and not a virtual one where communication can also take place not verbally but through written messages in these chat rooms.
Multiplayer social games will increase in 2022, marking a trend that increased markedly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the advent of social networks and their mass dissemination, it was strange that games had not yet made a major appearance on social networks. This is what is projected for 2022.
Social networks have definitely invaded our lives and have become an element of daily consultation, research, curiosities and also - obviously - games.
With the pandemic, many gamers found a way to interact socially with other people while being confined to mandatory confinement especially during 2019, 2020 and part of 2021.
As a somewhat academic but real definition, we could say that social video games (or simply games) are those that use, as the name suggests, social networks to play online, thus sharing their achievements with people anywhere in the world.
Virtuality knows no borders and, in this way, players can involve as many friends as possible in the games.
And this is where the main difference with other games lies, since social video games involve the integration and active participation of people who are sometimes real acquaintances, sometimes virtual acquaintances, but with whom we have identified -in a certain way- to the point of considering them -friends- and benefiting them with a "like", "I follow you", etc. There is a certain compatibility of character that, in other games, is not apparent.
It is a category of games which until now has been present especially in the so-called traditional board games but which everything indicates that this year will be extended to the multiplayer and cooperative games sector.
The main characteristic that identifies this type of video games and makes them even more attractive is the real interaction between players, even though they are essentially similar to real games of chance in which you can compete with other people for a prize.
What was once used on social media to promote a certain product has now become a steadily growing video game model thanks to the popularity and success of social media in general.
Subsequently, over the years, social videogames were integrating more and more people until they "collapsed" definitively during the pandemic.
For more than a decade, social video games have been present in the networks.
Already towards the end of 2009, when gaming had not yet reached even remotely the business it represents today, some social games started to appear, such as FarmVille, Mafia Wars and Castle Age, just to mention the best known at the time.
Some projects have continued, the most visionary ones, who were not resigned to abandoning a market niche which, they believed, would have immense value in the future. And they were not wrong.
Some, such as Mafia Wars developed by the company Zynga (which abandoned the project in 2017) went on to win important prizes and awards such as the Webby Awards in the People's Voice Winner category, reaching almost 30 million monthly users at the time.
FarmVille was also a social video game, but instead of cities, the central element was a farm and the products that could be grown on it.
It was also developed by Zynga (which develops games similar to internet browsers autonomously and presents them as widget applications on various social networks) which announced on the last day of 2020 that it would discontinue FarmVille on Facebook as the social network would no longer support games that run on Flash Player, admitting - instead - that it would continue to develop games for mobiles, a market sector that will also be greatly boosted in this year 2020.
Social video games enhance the possibilities of communication in the network in which they are played.
Social video games have the particularity, unique in their genre, of integrating all the different capacities and potentialities -present and future- of communication of the social network in which they are executed and in which all the users are interacting, such as messaging through the well-known chats, sending invitations to participate, using for this purpose the contents that the users of that network have been creating.
If we add to this the technological advance of mobile devices, together with the empowerment of networks with 5G, we find ourselves with a scenario in which new elements are being added to the characteristics of sociability that these types of applications present, among which, just for illustrative purposes, we can mention geolocation, the use of cameras and/or microphones to share in real time aspects and impressions of the games and the possibility of being permanently connected through a wireless network.
Social video games on mobile phones.
Security, i.e. the protection of the integrity of the platform and fundamentally of the players' data, has been one of the reasons why it is predicted that during 2022 the boom of these video games (and others in general) on mobile devices will take place, added to the monitoring and the possibility of massifying the operating platform, which in other words means building the game so that it can work on various platforms and different social networks, something that was (almost) impossible to achieve until now on computers due to the security flaws that generally manifested themselves using flash player.
For this reason, with the adoption of the HTML5 language by companies that lead the world market such as Google, Apple and Microsoft, both desktop computers and smartphones and tablets can make use of multimedia content (and in this case we are talking specifically about video games) using any browser, without the need to install an additional plugin.
Aunque no hay que subestimar el problema del aislamiento al que conducen como medio para desvincularse o evadir completamente del resto del mundo, una teoría predominante hacia fines de los años noventa, hay que aceptar el hecho de que los videojuegos en general -y más en casos extremos como fue el silamiento obligatorio a causa de la pandemia del coronavirus Covid-19- son un muy buen medio de socialización.
Hay dos herramientas fundamentales que hacen posible esta socialización a través de los videojuegos. Una es la chat y la otra es la conexión a través de un canal de voz permitiendo que los participantes en el juego hablen entre sí como si se encontraran en una sala del mundo real y no virtual donde la comunicación también puede tener lugar no verbalmente, sino a través de mensajes escritos en estas salas de chat.
Con el advenimiento de las redes sociales y su difusión a nivel masivo era extraño que hasta ahora los juegos no hubieran hecho una irrupción preponderante en las mismas. Es lo que se proyecta para este 2022.
Las redes sociales han invadido definitivamente nuestras vidas y se han transformado en un elemento de consulta diaria, de investigación, de curiosidades y también -obviamente- de juegos.
Con pa pandemia muchos jugadores encontraron una manera de interactuar socialmente con otras personas mientras estaban confinados obligatoriamente especialmente durante los a4os 2019, 2020 y parte del 2021.
Como definición un poco académica pero a su vez real, podríamos decir que los videojuegos (o simplemente juegos) socialesson aquellos que utilizan, como su nombre lo indica, las redes sociales para jugar online compartiendo de esta manera sus logros con personas de cualquier parte del mundo.
La virtualidad no conoce fronteras y, de esa manera, los jugadores pueden implicar en los juegos a tantos amigos como sea posible.
Y en este punto radica la principal diferencia con otros juegos, ya que en los videojuegos sociales se integran y participan activamente personas que a veces son conocidos reales, otras veces conocidos virtuales, pero con los cuáles nos hemos identificado -en cierto modo- a punto tal de considerarles -amigos- y beneficiarlos con un "me gusta", "te sigo", etc. Hay una cierta compatbilidad de carácter que, en otros juegos, no se manfiesta.
Es una categoría de juegos que hasta ahora era presente especialmente en los llamados juegos tradicionales de mesa pero que todo indica que en el presente año se ampliarán al sector de juegos multijugador y cooperativos.
La principal característica que identifica este tipo de videojuegos y que los hace aún más atractivos es la verdadera interacción que existe entre los jugadores, a pesar de que, en esencia, sean similares a los juegos de azar reales en los cuáles se puede competir con otras personas por un premio.
Lo que en su momento fue usado en las redes sociales para promocionar un determinado producto ahora se ha transformado en un modelo de videojuego en auge constante gracias a la popularidad y al éxito alcanzado por las redes sociales en general.
Posteriormente con el correr de los años los videojuegos sociales fueron integrando cad vez más personas hasta "decolar" definitivamente durante la pandemia.
Durante más de una década los videojuegos sociales han estado presente en las redes.
Una de las principales diferencias -y también su principal novedad- entre FarmVille 3 y el resto de juegos de la saga es que incluye varias previsiones meteorológicas.
Ya hacia fines del año 2009, cuando todavía el gaming no había alcanzado ni remotamente el business que hoy representa, comenzaron a aparecer algunos juegos sociales FarmVille, Mafia Wars y Castle Age por solo citar los más conocidos en ese momento.
Algunos proyectos han continuado, los más visionarios, que no se resignaban a abandonar un nicho der mercado que, consideraban, en el futuro tendría un inmenso valor. Y no se equivocaron.
Algunos como Mafia Wars desarrollado por la empresa Zynga (que abandonó el proyecto en el año 2017) llegaron a ganar importantes premios y reconocimientos como los Premios Webby en la categoría People's Voice Winner llegando a contar en su momento casi 30 millones de usuarios mensuales.
También FarmVille fue un videojuego social solo que en vez de ciudades el elemento centro era una granja y los productos que se podían cultivar en la misma.
También fue desarrollado por Zynga (que desarrolla juegos similares a los de los browsers internet de forma autónoma y los presenta como aplicaciones widget en las distintas redes sociales ) que anunció el último dia del año 2020 que suspendería FarmVille en Facebook ya que la red social dejaría de admitir juegos que se ejecutan en Flash Player, admitiendo -en cambio- que continuaría desarrollando los juegos para los móviles, un sector del mercado que también se potenciará mucho en este año 2020.
Los videojuegos sociales potencian las posibilidades de comunicación en la red en que son ejecutados.
Los videojuegos sociales tienen la particularidad, única en su género, de integrar todas las distintas capacidades y potencialidades -presentes y futuras- de comunicación de la red social en que son ejecutados y en la que están interactuando todos los usuarios, como por ejemplo la mensajería a través de las conocidas chats, el envío de invitaciones para participar, usando con este objetivo los propios contenidos que los usuarios de esa red han ido creando.
Si a ello le sumamos el avance tecnológico de los dispositivos móviles, sumado a la potenciación de las redes con el 5G, nos encomtramos con un escenario en el que nuevos elementos se van agregando a las características de sociabilización que presentan este tipo de aplicaciones entre las cuáles, solo a título ilutrativo, podemos mencionar la geolcalización, el uso de cáramaras y/o micrófonos para compartir en tiempo real aspectos e impresiones de los juegos y a la posibilidad de estar conectados en forma permanente a través de una red inalámbrica.
Los videojuegos sociales en los móviles.
La seguridad, es decir la protección de la integridad de la plataforma y fundamentalmente de los datos de los jugadores, han sido uno de los motivos por los cuáles se prevé que durante el 2022 será el boom de estos videojuegos (y otros en general) en los dispositivos móviles, sumado al monitoreo y a la posibilidad de masificar las plataforma de operación, que dicho en otras palabras significa construir el juego de modo que pueda funcionar en diversas plataformas y diferentes redes sociales, algo que era (casi) imposible de lograr hasta ahora en los ordenadores debido a los fallos de seguridad que generalmente se manifestaban usando flash player.
Este motivo llevó a que, con la adopción del lenguaje HTML5 por parte de las compañas que lideran el mercado mundial como Google, Apple y Microsoft, tanto los ordenadores de escritorio como smartphones y tablets puedan hacer uso de contenido multimedia (y estamos hablando en este caso específicamente de los videojuegos) usando un browser cualquiera, sin necesidad de instalar un plugin adicional.
