Este videojuego del genero de combate vehicular se basa en una historia alternativa fijándonos en los años 70´s y en una crisis económica global donde el petróleo es el principal activo y una compañía supe poderosa Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime (OMAR) desea monopolio del petróleo mundial, para lograr ese objetivo debe acabar con Estados Unidos. Un grupo de terroristas trataran de hacer estragos en la economía estadounidense y por otro lado un grupo llamado los vigilantes trataran de restablecer el orden en la nación.
Lo primero que podemos notar de este videojuego es su jugabilidad de lucha entre vehículos, este fue sin dudas el primer videojuego de este género, la verdad no he tenido muchos de este tipo ya que prefiero una conducción más clásica, sin embargo, me agradan los videojuegos locos de árcade en donde todo puede ocurrir, para la época recuerdo muy pocos juegos con este tipo de mecánica donde no tienes que llegar a una meta o cruzar un checkpoint, debes sobrevivir.
Lo más interesante es la variedad de armas que son adaptadas a nuestro vehículo, comenzamos con una simple ametralladora, sin embargo, conseguiremos más armas en el mapa del videojuego o destrozando a nuestros enemigos. La variedad de estas armas es un punto a favor que posee este videojuego, estas armas tienen diferentes modalidades en las cuales podemos encontrar lanzamientos de misiles, colocar minas, también podemos disparar laser, incluso unas poderosas bombas que abren un gran agujero en el suelo. Creo que este tipo de juego centrado en la variedad y distintas funciones de las armas hace que los jugadores puedan elegir bien cuáles son las más convenientes para las misiones o simplemente para desaparecer a un enemigo, definitivamente tener en el inventario armas variadas con distintas funciones era algo que requería estrategia por parte del jugador.
El jugador también debe ser hábil con el volante para poder realizar disparos certeros, teniendo en cuenta que en ocasiones debemos cambiar de arma para aprovechar al máximo todo nuestro sistema armamentístico en el auto. Se juega en un escenario abierto no limitándose a una carretera o pista de carrera, conducir en medio de un pueblo o en algunos acantilados le daba al videojuego una mejor emoción en las batallas, además, había objetos o edificios que se podían destruir los cuales ocultaban objetos especiales y armas que suponían una mayor ventaja.
Otra característica importante era que cada vehículo tenia características propias, no era el simple videojuego de conducción donde todos los autos son distintos en diseño pero presentan la misma característica en velocidad y conducción, esto hace que el jugador pueda aprovechar las ventajas del vehículo seleccionado o saber cuáles son sus debilidades.
Modo Historia
Recuerdo que el modo historia era individual en con cada personaje del videojuego, al principio elegimos el personaje según el vehículo que posee. Normalmente debíamos hacer misiones además de eliminar a uno que otro enemigo que quería impedir que tuviéramos éxito, las misiones podían ser destruir edificios como bancos, refinerías, estaciones de servicio y de gas, por supuesto con antagonistas que debemos destruir antes de que ellos nos eliminen a nosotros.
Lo curioso del modo historia es que al completarla con un personaje la cinemática era un complemento de la historia final reunida por todos los personajes elegibles del videojuego, es decir que con cada historia individual se lograba acceder a un fragmento de una cinemática o película final de Vigilante 8.
Para la época era los videojuegos con este tipo de cinemáticas motivaban a completar el videojuego, la principal razón era descubrir a través de esa pequeña película lo que ocurría o como terminaba todo, en ese sentido Vigilante 8 era un videojuego que todos queríamos completar e ir armando el rompecabezas de todas las cinemáticas que nos otorgaba cada personaje. Recuerdo que muchas de las misiones que hacemos en el modo historia al final se realizan debido a que tenemos un chip que controla la mente por lo cual en un principio somos los terroristas que destruimos los edición para crear caos en Estados Unidos.
Modo Vs
Me encantaba jugar en modo vs con mis amigos, creo que es uno de los videojuegos que siempre jugábamos cuando nos reuníamos, con la típica regla de “el que pierda pasa el control”, me parecía genial realizar los combates y agregar a la computadora a la batalla, cuidarse de los disparos, esquivar minas y buscar las mejores armas se volvían muy emocionantes en un todos contra todos, algo muy alejado a la conducción clásica de otros videojuegos.
Era muy emocionante mostrar nuestras habilidades de conducción para esquivar balas y poder apuntar correctamente, recuerdo que en el local de alquiler jugamos mucho a este videojuego y luego cuando tuve mi propia consola era de los juegos que recurrentemente jugábamos, fue el primero de este género árcade o alocado de combate de vehículos que tuve.
Gráficos
En lo particular pienso que los gráficos eran buenos teniendo en cuenta que el juego es lanzado a finales de los 90´s, sin embargo, no era de una calidad que representara una evolución significativa en los videojuegos se mezclaba la tecnología poligonal con la del pixel haciendo una mezcla de aspecto 3D y 2D, sabemos por videojuegos cuyo desarrollo había logrado tener un aspecto totalmente 3D, sin embargo, Vigilante 8 es basado en un entorno un poco más realista que otros videojuegos como Mario 64 o Legend of Zelda por lo cual era insuficiente el número de polígonos adaptables para una visualización en 3D en un entorno más realista, sin embargo, en líneas generales se produce un juego atractivo para los jugadores de la época cumpliendo con las expectativas de visualización limitadas por la tecnología de la época.

Este videojuego en general era muy bueno para la época, en lo particular disfruté mucho la mecánica de este videojuego, creo que es un videojuego con una temática estupenda que nos hace vivir una historia que vamos completando por fragmentos con cada personaje.
Existe un remake de esta versión lanzada en el 2008 para la plataforma de Xbox 360 que espero pronto presentar mi opinión sobre dicha actualización en la comunidad. A pesar de haber tenido esta consola no pude tener este videojuego en su año de lanzamiento, lamentablemente las luces de la muerte me impidieron jugar muchos videojuegos en la Xbox 360, sin embargo, posteriormente pude jugarlos.
Para la época de lanzamiento de la primera versión, Vigilante 8 era un excelente videojuego, apuesto a que si tuviera en mis manos la posibilidad de jugar este videojuego con esos viejos amigos no dudarían en aceptar para jugar y disfrutar de un momento lleno de nostalgia y de muchos recuerdos tanto en los locales de alquiler como en nuestras propias consolas. I think this type of gameplay focused on the variety and different functions of the weapons makes players can choose well which are the most convenient for the missions or simply to disappear an enemy, definitely have in the inventory varied weapons with different functions was something that required strategy on the part of the player.
