Carl Johnson, also known by his nickname CJ, is a fictional character and the protagonist of the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. CJ is a member of the Grove Street Families, a gang located in the fictional city of Los Santos.
Born in 1968, CJ grew up in the Grove Street neighborhood, alongside his brothers Sean "Sweet" Johnson and Brian Johnson. However, due to the sudden death of his mother and the betrayal of his brother Brian, CJ left Los Santos to pursue a better life in Liberty City.
Five years later, CJ returns to Los Santos after learning about the death of his brother, and finds the city overrun by gang violence, drugs, and corruption. He is forced to rejoin the Grove Street Families and fight against rival gangs, the corrupt government, and other enemies in order to protect his family and friends.
Throughout the game, CJ faces many challenges and obstacles as he attempts to regain control of the city and restore the Grove Street Families to their former glory. He allies himself with other gangs and characters, and becomes involved in various criminal activities such as drug trafficking, robbery, and murder.
As the game progresses, CJ's character and motivations become more complex. Despite his involvement in criminal activities, he is shown to have a moral code and a strong sense of loyalty to his friends and family. He also grapples with the consequences of his actions and the corruption of the city, and ultimately seeks redemption for his past mistakes.
CJ's appearance and personality are customizable by the player. He is voiced by Chris Bellard, also known by his stage name Young Maylay, who also contributed to the game's soundtrack. CJ has become a popular and iconic character in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and is considered one of the most well-known and influential video game characters of all time.
