Introduction.
Blade of Darkness or as it was originally known in its days of release to the public, Severance: Blade of Darkness, is an action video game (Hack and Slash) and some elements of role (RPG) in third person, which was developed by the now defunct Spanish video game company Rebel Act Studios, based in the city of Madrid Spain, and was composed mostly by staff of Spanish nationality, so we can say with full confidence that Blade of Darkness is a Spanish video game.
The year of release of Blade of Darkness was February 26, 2001, reaching a good amount of sales in Spain and Europe in general, but it would suffer from a great wave of piracy that caused the economic collapse of the company Rebel Act, in addition to a bad marketing campaign throughout America by its distribution company, the very famous Codemasters.
The video game has a very innovative graphics engine (for its time of release) that produces lighting effects and texture quality that for its time of release caused a very important impact among gamers of the early 2000s, because this graphic engine of Blade of Darkness allowed a combat and displacement in real time, which produced effects of movement and attack very fluid and added to the use of combos that gave the gamer a unique experience for the time, for the latter reason among others, today it is considered one of the forerunners of the Souls genre.
Some Lore from our Avatar.
Tukaram is a member of the powerful and ancient tribe known as the Irkanois, who are a proud tribe that broke away from the domain of men tired of finding so much filth and corruption among the various man-made societies. The members of the Tukaram tribe enjoy the fame of being known as the bravest and fiercest warriors that have ever walked the face of the earth. The Irkanois moved away to the lands of Kara - Kum in order to be out of the reach of the domain of the human kings and to be able to carry out in total freedom their lifestyle which, although very simple, is strongly focused on combat and battle, with children having to learn to hunt and fight at very early ages.
In the different tribes of the Irkanois, the highest authority figures are the shamans, and for several moons these chief shamans of the Tukaram tribe have been noticing disturbances in the tranquility of the steppes, producing mysterious disappearances of some warriors of the tribe, in addition to the presence of evil shadows in the surroundings of the tribe's camps. But the shaman chiefs do not intend to remain idle, and in the midst of their mystical visions they could see a chosen one, which they interpreted to be the talented and lethal young warrior Tukaram whom they decide to send to the ancient stones of the ancestors in Kashgar in search of wisdom.

And after an interesting introduction we are informed that we are in the lands of Tukaram's ancestors, that is to say the ancient lands of Kashgar, where our path begins. The first thing to note is that before making contact with any enemy, we will first have to cross a wide and desolate terrain so the first tip of the guide goes like this:
a) To move and run faster we will have to holster our weapon, just as I show in the image above, this is done with the **shift **.
Among many interesting things that Blade of Darkness has one of them is how unpredictable the game can be, and this is attributed to its original and advanced (for its time) graphics engine which produces kinetic effects in the actors who are at the mercy of the physical inertia simulated by the graphics engine. An example of what I'm talking about can be seen in the funny event that is shown in the gif above, where the orc that spotted us fell while trying to jump the last part of the bridge ha ha ha ha.
Next I am going to explain the use of a fundamental tool during the gameplay of Blade of Darkness, and this tool is the Character Dossier, which has very important sections to take into account, such as the Weapons section which we will talk about next, in addition to sections of Secrets , Items, Specials, Texts and Abilities where we can find information of secret weapons and their activation combos, statistics of each Item, some of the Lore of the map where we are, and some racial skills that our character has.
Next I explain the Weapons section.
Weapons.
In the image above you can see three types of signaling boxes, which I will explain what they signal each by color type.
Blue boxes: These stats of for example +5A, +40A, mean that this weapon will add a damage of +5 or +40 respectively when you use it and this will be reflected in the stat shown in the lower right corner POW. **.
Red Boxes: These stats of for example L5, L8, mean that you will only be able to use the combo of that weapon, or special ability when you reach level 3 or level 4 respectively. Where it says Attack specifies the name of the attack and the combination of keys that we must press to activate the combo, for example to activate the combo Speed Kill that belongs to the weapon Chaos Sword, we must left click + up arrow and down arrow.
Green boxes: The stats of the type ** -5D, -40D,** indicate a penalty to the defense of our avatar of -5 and -40 respectively, which will be reflected in the lower left corner at the time of using that weapon and will make us more susceptible to receive damage.
Items.
This section is very good to keep in mind during our gameplay, as it tells us exactly the properties of each item that we can get in the game, for example tells us how many points of life is able to restore each type of food we get, as well as resistance to some types of damage that provide us with some objects such as the Ghost Medallion that provides protection against poison that many enemies often use even poisoned arrows.
Abilities.
In this section of our Dossier we are told how to carry out the special combat actions of our character, which will vary depending on the race of our Avatar and these abilities, unlike the combos, will not depend on the type of weapon we are using. Of course, it is important to emphasize the fact that as with the weapon combos, these skills will have their respective level limitations. For example, the ability called "Rage " can only be used when you reach level 2 as indicated in L2..
b) To activate the Rage combat skill, you must press: left-click + right arrow, followed by left-click + right arrow. b) To activate the Rage combat skill, you must press: **left-click + right arrow **.
And that's how we encounter our first combat against an enemy, which turns out to be an orc that was guarding a small abandoned barracks. This type of orcs are among the most common enemies in Blade of Darkness, but still prove to be somewhat annoying to defeat at the beginning because they tend to be rather clumsy, but quite unpredictable in their attacks. On the other hand, in the Gif above we can observe again how the graphic engine of Blade of Darkness is capable of producing excellent mutilations in the enemies when we cut them with our powerful sword, as well as how the body of the slaughtered orc falls at the mercy of the physics very well simulated (for its time) in BoD.
Among the many benefits in the mechanics that Blade of Darkness offers us, is the ability to pick up and light a torch by using any lit torch that we find along the way.
c) Although they seem useless, they are not. The torches are quite useful because there are a lot of areas where the vision can be somewhat limited, plus you can always use these to light boxes and undo blocks, in addition to throwing them against enemies. To light the torches, approach another fire source nearby and press the E key.
d) Even if your character is not adapted to certain types of weapons like Tukaram, to whom one-handed weapons only cause him a penalty and he cannot use them properly, but even so these weapons can be used to throw them against our enemies and reduce their life by a certain amount. This strategy of throwing weapons against enemies is particularly useful when we are attacked by several enemies at the same time.
After finding a hidden passage through a subway cave we found that these caves were infested with very large spiders whose attack, although not very powerful in itself, is effective in reducing the life points of our avatar because the attacks of these spiders have the ability to poison our avatar and cause a slow but lasting drop in their life points.
e) To eliminate the poisonous spiders without much difficulty you must use the low attack, that is to say use: left-click + down arrow since with side or frontal attacks the probability of failure is very high.
Yes friends here are also available bows and arrows, which although very inaccurate are usually quite effective when it comes to taking down enemies. For example in the first levels of the game we can shoot down any low level orc with a single arrow. A quite nice and interesting aspect (for a game from 2001) is that when using the bow and arrows the perspective changes to first person, which adds a quite good variety to the gameplay.
f) You can always pick up the arrows you have shot if you get them lying on the ground or stuck on a wall, to do this you just have to approach and press E.
g) Never completely forget to use your Avatar's special abilities because even if they are not the special combos of the weapons, they serve to break enemy blocks and inflict a greater amount of damage, besides how great they are visually speaking the movements made by the avatars when executing them.
h) The mutilations in Blade of Darkness are not something merely aesthetic, because they can also be useful, since we can use the limbs lost by our enemies as weapons, as can be seen in the image above. These limbs can also be thrown at our enemies to reduce their health points.
It can be quite funny to walk around during the game with a severed orc arm hitting any enemy we come across ha ha ha.
I finally decided to end this first gameplay when we spotted in the distance from the ruins of Kashgar an elite Orc that looks quite imposing, compared to the lesser orcs I had faced during this level.
I call the above the deadly crush... ha ha ha ha ha.

Blade of Darkness o como originalmente fue conocido en sus días de estreno ante el público, Severance: Blade of Darkness, es un videojuego de acción (Hack and Slash) y algunos elementos de rol (RPG) en tercera persona, el cual fue desarrollado por la ya extinta compañía de videojuegos española Rebel Act Studios, con sede en la ciudad de Madrid España, y que se encontraba compuesta en su mayoría por personal de nacionalidad española, así que podemos decir con plena confianza que Blade of Darkness es un videojuego español.
El año de lanzamiento de Blade of Darkness fue el 26 de Febrero del año 2001, alcanzando una buena cantidad de ventas en España y Europa en general, pero éste sufriría de gran oleada de piratería que causó el desplome económico de la compañía Rebel Act, además de una mala campaña de marketing en toda América por parte de su compañía distribuidora, la muy famosa Codemasters.
El videojuego cuenta con un motor gráfico muy innovador (para su tiempo de salida) que produce unos efectos de iluminación y calidad de texturas que para su época de salida causaron un impacto muy importante entre los gamers del inicio de los 2000, debido a que este motor gráfico de Blade of Darkness permitia un combate y desplazamiento en tiempo real, que producía efectos de movimiento y ataque muy fluido y sumado al uso de combos que le daban al gamer una experiencia única para la época, por esta última razón entre otras, hoy en día se le considera una de los precursores del genero Souls.
Algo de Lore de nuestro Avatar.
Tukaram es un miembro de la poderosa y antigua tribu conocida como los Irkanois, los cuales son una tribu orgullosa que se separó de los dominios de los hombres cansados de encontrar tanta suciedad y corrupción entre las distintas sociedades formadas por el hombre. Los miembros de la tribu de Tukaram gozan de la fama de ser conocidos como los más bravos y fieros guerreros que alguna vez hayan caminado sobre la faz de la tierra. Los Irkanois se alejaron hacia las tierras de Kara – Kum para así estar fuera del alcance de los dominios de los reyes humanos y poder llevar a cabo en total libertad su estilo de vida que aunque muy simple, está fuertemente enfocado hacia el combate y la batalla, teniendo los niños que aprender a cazar y combatir a edades muy tempranas.
En las distintas tribus de los Irkanois, la figura de mayor autoridad son los chamanes, y desde hace varias lunas estos jefes chamanes de la tribu de Tukaram han estado notando perturbaciones en la tranquilidad de las estepas, produciéndose misteriosas desapariciones de algunos guerreros de la tribu, además de la presencia de malignas sombras en los alrededores de los campamentos de la tribu.
Pero los jefes chamanes no piensan quedarse de brazos cruzados, y en medio de sus místicas visiones pudieron ver a un elegido, el cual ellos interpretaron que era el talentoso y letal joven guerrero Tukaram a quien deciden enviar a las antiguar piedras de los ancestros en Kashgar en búsqueda de sabiduría.

Y luego de una interesante introducción se nos informa que estamos en las tierras de los antepasados de Tukaram, es decir las antiguas tierras de Kashgar, en donde nuestro camino comienza. Lo primero a destacar es que antes de hacer contacto con cualquier enemigo, primero tendremos que cruzar un amplio y desolado terreno por lo cual el primer consejo de la guía va así:
a) Para desplazarnos y correr más rápido tendremos que enfundar nuestra arma, tal cual como muestro en la imagen de arriba, esto se hace con las mayúsculas.
Entre muchas cosas interesantes que tiene Blade of Darkness una de ellas es lo impredecible que puede llegar a ser el juego, y esto es atribuido a su tan original y avanzado (para su época) motor gráfico el cual produce efectos cinéticos en los actores quines se encuentran a la merced de la inercia física simulada por el motor gráfico. Un ejemplo de lo que les hablo lo podemos apreciar en el tan gracioso suceso que es mostrado en el gif de arriba, en donde el orco que nos divisó se cayó al intentar saltarse la última parte del puente ja ja ja ja.
A continuación te voy a explicar el uso de una herramienta fundamental durante en el gameplay de Blade of Darkness, y esta herramienta es la del Dossier de personaje, la cual posee secciones muy importantes a tener en cuenta, como lo puede ser la sección Weapons de la cual hablaremos a continuación, además de secciones de Secrets , Items, Specials, Texts y Abilities en donde podremos encontrar información de armas secretas y sus combos de activación, estadísticas de cada Item, Algo del Lore del mapa en donde nos encontramos, y algunas habilidades raciales que posee nuestro personaje.
A continuación explico la sección Weapons.
Weapons.
En la imagen de arriba puedes apreciar tres tipos de cajas de señalización, las cuales te voy a explicar que señalizan cada una por tipo de color.
Cajas azules: Estas stats de por ejemplo +5A, +40A, significan que esa arma añadirá un daño de +5 o +40 respectivamente cuando la uses y esto lo veras reflejado en la stat mostrada en la esquina inferior derecha POW.
Cajas Rojas: Estas stats de por ejemplo L5, L8, significan que solo podrás usar el combo de esa arma, o habilidad especial cuando alcances el nivel 3 o nivel 4 respectivamente. Donde dice Attack se especifica el nombre del ataque y la combinación de teclas que debemos de pulsar para activar dicho combo, por ejemplo para activar el combo Speed Kill que pertenece al arma Chaos Sword, debemos hacer click izquierdo + flecha arriba y flecha abajo seguidamente.
Cajas verdes: Los stats del tipo ** -5D, -40D,** indican una penalización a la defensa de nuestro avatar de -5 y -40 respectivamente, la cual veras reflejada en la esquina inferior izquierda al momento de utilizar esa arma y nos hará más susceptibles a recibir daño.
Items.
Esta sección es muy buena tenerla en cuenta durante nuestro gameplay, ya que nos indica exactamente las propiedades de cada ítem que podemos obtener en el juego, por ejemplo nos indica cuantos puntos de vida es capaz de restaurar cada tipo de alimento que consigamos, así como la resistencia a algunos tipos de daño que nos proporcionan algunos objetos como por ejemplo el Ghost Medallion que nos proporciona protección contra el veneno que muchos enemigos suelen emplear hasta en flechas envenenadas.
Abilities.
En esta sección de nuestro Dossier se nos indica cómo llevar a cabo las acciones especiales de combate de nuestro personaje, las cuales variaran dependientemente de la raza de nuestro Avatar y estas habilidades no dependerá a diferencia de los combos, del tipo de arma que estemos utilizando. Claro, es importante recalcar el hecho de que al igual que sucede con los combos de las Armas, estas habilidades tendrán sus respectivas limitaciones de nivel. Por ejemplo la habilidad llamada ”Rage” solo podrá ser usada al llegar al nivel 2 tal cual como lo indica la L2.
b) Para activar la habilidad de combate Rage, debes presionar: click-izquierdo + flecha derecha, seguidamente de click-izquierdo + flecha derecha.
Y así es como nos topamos con nuestro primer combate contra un enemigo, el cual resulta ser un orco que se encontraba custodiando un pequeño cuartel abandonado. Este tipo de orcos son de los enemigos más comunes en Blade of Darkness, pero aun así resultan ser algo molestos de abatir al comienzo debido a que suelen ser aunque algo torpes, bastantes impredecibles en sus ataques. Por otra parte, en el Gif de arriba podemos observar nuevamente como el motor gráfico de Blade of Darkness es capaz de producir excelentes mutilaciones en los enemigos cuando los cortamos con nuestra poderosa espada, así de como el cuerpo del orco degollado cae a merced de la física muy bien simulada (para su tiempo) en BoD .
Entre muchas bondades en las mecánicas que nos ofrece Blade of Darkness, se encuentra el poder recoger y encender antorcha mediante el uso de cualquier antorcha encendida que encontremos en el camino.
c) Aunque parezcan inútiles, pues no lo son. Las antorchas son de bastante utilidad debido a que existen gran cantidad de zonas en donde la visión puede ser algo limitada, además de que siempre puedes utilizar estas para encender cajas y deshacer bloqueos, además de lanzarlas en contra de los enemigos. Para encender las antorchas acércate a otra fuente de fuego cercana y presiona la tecla E.
d) Aunque tu personaje no se adapte a ciertos tipos de armas como sucede con Tukaram, a quien las armas de una mano solo le causan penalidad y no las puede usar de manera adecuada, pero aun así estas armas pueden servir para lanzarlas en contra de nuestros enemigos y reducir en cierta cantidad su vida. Esta estrategia de lanzar armas contra los enemigos es de particular utilidad cuando nos atacan entre varios enemigos al mismo tiempo.
Luego de encontrar un pasaje oculto a través de una cuevas subterráneas nos encontramos con que dichas cuevas estaban infestadas de arañas muy grandes cuyo ataque que aunque no muy poderoso en si mismo, si es efectivo en reducir bastante los puntos de vida de nuestro avatar debido a que los ataques de estas arañas tienen la capacidad de envenenar a nuestro avatar y causarle una lenta pero duradera caída en sus puntos de vida.
e) Para eliminar a las arañas venenosas sin mucha dificultad debes de utilizar el ataque bajo, es decir usar: click-izquierdo + flecha abajo ya que con ataques laterales o frontales es muy alta la probabilidad de fallo.
Si amigos acá también están disponibles los arcos y las flechas, que aunque muy imprecisos suelen ser bastante efectivos a la hora de abatir enemigos. Por ejemplo en los primeros niveles del juego podemos abatir a cualquier orco de bajo nivel con un sola flecha. Un aspecto bastante agradable e interesante (para ser un juego del 2001) es que al momento de utilizar el arco y las flechas la perspectiva cambia a primera persona, lo que añade una variedad bastante buena al gameplay.
f) Siempre puedes recoger las flechas que hayas lanzado si las consigues tiradas en el piso o clavadas en alguna pared, para hacer esto solo tienes que acercarte y presionar E.
g) Nunca te olvides por completo de utilizar las habilidades especiales de tu Avatar ya que aunque no sean los combos especiales de las armas, estos sirven para romper bloqueos enemigos e infligirles una mayor cantidad de daño, además de lo genial que son visualmente hablando los movimientos hechos por los avatares al ejecutarlos.
h) Las mutilaciones en Blade of Darkness no son algo meramente estético, pues también pueden sernos de utilidad, debido a que podemos utilizar las extremidades perdidas por nuestros enemigos como armas, tal cual como se puede apreciar en la imagen superior. Estas extremidades también las podemos lanzar a nuestros enemigos para reducirles sus puntos de vida.
Puede ser bastante gracioso andar por allí durante el juego con un brazo de orco cercenado dando golpes a cuanto enemigo nos topemos ja ja ja.
Finalmente he decidido terminar este primer gameplay cuando divisamos a lo lejos de las ruinas de Kashgar a un Orco de élite que tiene una apariencia bastante imponente, en comparación con los orcos menores que había enfrentado durante este nivel.
A lo anterior le llamo el flechazo mortal… ja ja ja.
