In my last post about World War Z I mentioned how each episode tells it's own little story. Each episode takes place in a new city with a new band of four survivors. To be perfectly honest these stories aren't particularly great but they add a lot of nice flavor to each episode so that it doesn't become all about mindlessly mowing down zombies. Even though that's the fun part.
Enter Moscow
World War Z's 3rd episode takes place in Moscow during winter time. Here we follow four survivors who are simply out to scavenge for food when their missions takes a whole other turn. When they find a crashed helicopter containing survivors they learn that they can help liberate Moscow from the zombies. It's an offer they simply can't refuse.
This episode was quite funny to me. As we move through the three parts of the episode we end up below the Kremlin in a secret super lab where a very potent nerve gas has been developed that can help in killing all of the zombies in Moscow. I feel like this is the most stereotypical Russian thing ever. It gave me a few giggles as we were pushing through the levels for sure. Damn Russians and their crazy experiments.
My favorite part of the episode was when we were heading down into the Kremlin. This took us through some pretty cool looking tunnels that gave me flashbacks to Metro 2033, a game that I played and loves. Funny enough that game was also set in Moscow. Beneath Moscow to be more exact. These areas were so well designed that it was impossible to not take a few extra looks at the scenery.
Leveling up as the Exterminator
One of the many things I like about World War Z are its classes. There are eight of them in total and they can all be leveled up and customized to create a lot of unique builds. This is yet another one of those things that add a lot to the replay value of this game. Even if you play through all of the episodes as one class you haven't tried out half of what the game has to offer yet.
After trying a few classes back and forth in my early games I landed on the Exterminator as my favorite one. This class is the only one that starts with molotovs and has a general focus on dealing damage with fire. As we level up we unlock more perks that increase fire damage and makes our molotovs more potent, like making them burn longer or simply deal more damage. Later on I also unlocked claymores that can set an area on fire once they explode. Very helpful in dealing with the hordes.
I'm pretty sure if the game didn't have a class system liket this where you can spend weeks to unlock all the perks for each class then I wouldn't have the same interest to keep on playing it after beating all of the episodes.
Now that Moscow has been conquered it's time to move on to Tokyo. While playing in the cold of Winter was pretty cool I hope the Tokyo episode is set in a warmer season. With how well they've designed this game I'm sure it will look absolutely amazing. Until next time.
