Hey everyone! I decided to make this post because, as a game developer, it's obvious that I love games so I wanted to share my thoughts on this classic.
Yeah, I know… "WTF, how did it take you so long to play this?"
Well, for a long time I got sucked into the black hole of competitive and online games with friends. So I never gave myself time to enjoy single-player games.
Now that I’ve stepped back from online gaming, I’ve started going through my backlog of titles I bought and never played. And since the series came out, it felt like the perfect time to start with The Last of Us, and then jump into the series later.
¡Hola a todos! Decidí hacer este post porque, como desarrollador de videojuegos, es obvio que amo los juegos, así que quería compartir mis pensamientos sobre este clásico.
Sí, ya sé... "¿WTF, cómo te tomó tanto tiempo jugarlo?"
Bueno, durante mucho tiempo me quedé atrapado en el vicio de los juegos competitivos y online con amigos. Así que nunca me tomé el tiempo para disfrutar juegos single-player.
Ahora que me alejé un poco de los juegos online, empecé a jugar varios títulos que había comprado y nunca toqué. Y como salió la serie, me pareció el momento perfecto para empezar con The Last of Us y después mirar la adaptación.

🧠 General Gameplay & Mechanics
Let me start by saying I’m not great at stealth games. I always get caught, I never understand enemy patterns, and eventually it turns into a chaotic shootout.
But The Last of Us balances this well. You can eliminate a few enemies in stealth, then go loud. It made stealth optional, not forced. There were a few sections that clearly expected full silence (yes, I died like 300 times), but I managed to push through.
Empecemos por acá: no soy bueno con los juegos de sigilo. Siempre me descubren, nunca entiendo bien los patrones de los enemigos y todo termina en un tiroteo caótico.
Pero The Last of Us lo balancea bien. Podés eliminar a algunos enemigos en sigilo y luego pasar a la acción. El sigilo es opcional, no obligatorio. Hubo algunas secciones que sí te exigían silencio absoluto (sí, morí como 300 veces), pero logré pasarlas.
📖 Story
There’s not much to say other than: it’s excellent. No wonder they adapted it into a show. It practically writes itself for television. Emotional, tense, well-paced. It does what games rarely do: make you care.
No hay mucho que decir más que: es excelente. No me sorprende que la hayan adaptado a una serie. Prácticamente se escribe sola para televisión. Es emocional, tensa, bien narrada. Hace algo que pocos juegos logran: que realmente te importe lo que pasa.
🌄 Environments & Visuals
I loved the scenery. The game progresses through the seasons, and each one brings a stunning change in landscape. My favorite was spring, near the end. Those shots of overgrown cities filled with green and wildlife made me want to stop and just enjoy the view.
The interior spaces are also super well-designed: from sewers to office buildings, they offer great visual variety and help keep the game feeling fresh.
Me encantaron los paisajes. El juego avanza a lo largo de las estaciones y cada una trae un cambio visual impresionante. Mi favorita fue la primavera, cerca del final. Esas postales de ciudades cubiertas de verde y animales salvajes daban ganas de quedarse ahí solo mirando el paisaje.
Los interiores también están muy bien diseñados: desde alcantarillas hasta edificios de oficinas, hay muchísima variedad visual que evita que el juego se vuelva repetitivo.
😱 Enemies & AI
Can we all agree that we hate Clickers? 90% of my deaths came from them. Half the time I couldn’t even tell them apart from regular infected during the action, and bam instant death.
I also noticed some bugs in the AI. A few enemies just looped between two points endlessly until I hit them or got spotted.
And the brick/bottle mechanic? I never fully got it. Sometimes they'd react to the sound… sometimes not at all.
¿Podemos estar todos de acuerdo en que odiamos a los chasqueadores? El 90% de mis muertes fueron por culpa de ellos. La mitad del tiempo ni siquiera los distinguía de los infectados normales, y ¡zas! muerte instantánea.
También noté algunos errores en la IA. A veces ciertos enemigos quedaban corriendo de un punto A a un punto B sin parar hasta que los golpeaba o me veían.
¿Y la mecánica del ladrillo/botella? Nunca la entendí del todo. A veces reaccionaban al sonido… otras veces ni se movían.
🧭 Puzzles & Orientation
This might just be me, but I often felt lost. The game has pretty open areas and while it usually points you toward the main path, sometimes that direction wasn’t obvious. I'd wander around for a long time before finally getting a hint.
The puzzles were simple but fun. My only nitpick? Ellie and the pallets. She's 14, she could learn to swim, right? 😆 Still, it added some dynamic interactions that I appreciated.
Capaz me pasó solo a mí, pero varias veces me sentí perdido. El juego tiene áreas bastante abiertas y, aunque muchas veces te señala por dónde seguir, otras no es tan claro. Me pasé largos ratos explorando hasta que el juego me daba alguna pista.
Los puzzles me gustaron: simples pero entretenidos. Mi única queja es sobre Ellie y los palets… ¡tiene 14 años, podría aprender a nadar! 😆 Igual, me pareció una mecánica que aportaba variedad.
🔫 Weapons & Crafting
I really enjoyed the weapon variety. My biggest surprise was the bow didn’t give it much love at first, but once I tried it, it became my favorite. Silent headshots for the win.
My main issue was with the weapon upgrade system. Since you can’t upgrade damage, early guns (like the first pistol) quickly become useless. You can improve reload speed or capacity, but ammo is scarce, so it felt like a waste. Eventually you get better weapons, but it would’ve been nice to keep older ones viable too.
Crafting was great simple and effective. My favorite was upgrading melee weapons to kill in one hit. Used that a lot.
As for Joel’s character upgrades aside from max health and escape from Clickers, the rest felt a bit meh. Maybe others found them useful, but nothing stood out to me.
Me gustó mucho la variedad de armas. La gran sorpresa fue el arco. Al principio no le di bola, pero después lo probé y me encantó. Poder eliminar enemigos con sigilo de un flechazo fue clave, especialmente para alguien como yo que no es fan del sigilo.
Mi única crítica es el sistema de mejoras de armas. Como no podés mejorar el daño, las armas del principio (como la primera pistola) se vuelven inútiles rápido. Podés mejorar la recarga o la capacidad, pero con la poca munición que hay no sirve tanto. Después te dan mejores armas, pero hubiese estado bueno que las primeras siguieran siendo útiles.
El crafteo me pareció genial: simple, con variedad. Lo que más usé fue mejorar las armas cuerpo a cuerpo para matar de un golpe.
Sobre las mejoras de Joel: más allá de la salud máxima y la habilidad de escapar de los chasqueadores, las demás me parecieron medio meh. Capaz alguien las aprovechó mejor, pero a mí no me llamaron.
⏱ Playtime & Replay Value
I was honestly surprised by how long the game is. I expected maybe 6-8 hours, but it took me around 12. Just when I thought the story was ending, it kept going and I loved that.
There’s also bonus content after finishing, like the Left Behind DLC (which I haven’t played yet), and you can replay the game to unlock collectibles and upgrades.
Honestamente, me sorprendió lo largo que es el juego. Esperaba unas 6-8 horas, pero me llevó alrededor de 12. Justo cuando pensaba que la historia estaba por terminar, seguía, y eso me encantó.
También hay contenido extra después de terminarlo, como el DLC Left Behind (que todavía no jugué), y podés volver a jugar la historia para desbloquear coleccionables y mejoras.
🧡 Final Thoughts
Before writing this, I liked the game…
But now that I’ve broken it all down, I like it even more.
It’s a must-play. A game that manages to blend emotion, gameplay, and storytelling in a truly iconic way. I’ll definitely be checking out the show and I’m looking forward to playing Part II next (expect a second review soon!).

Pero ahora que lo analicé a fondo, me gusta aún más.
Es un juego que hay que jugar sí o sí. Logra combinar emoción, gameplay y narrativa de una forma verdaderamente icónica. Seguro voy a mirar la serie y tengo muchas ganas de jugar la Parte II (¡esperen una segunda review pronto!).
