Hack n' slash is a genre that does not usually receive the appreciation it deserves, and apart from those iconic titles that we all know (Devil May Cry and God of War), there are very few examples of games that know how to use the format. in an efficient way.
And while I feel that Dante's Inferno is painfully similar to the examples I've just mentioned, this doesn't erase the fact that it's one of the modern hack n' slash explorations out there.
You see, Dante's Inferno is a Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Playstation Portable game that was released in 2010, taking various elements from Dante Alighieri's divine comedy to tell a story where a warrior must descend into hell to save his beloved Beatrice.
The reason why this premise works so well is because without having to fall into narrative complexity, it is capable of offering us a series of settings, characters and weapons that, loosely adapting the descriptions presented in the iconic poem, become a perfect mix. for a simple and fun game that in turn has its own aesthetic identity.
If god of war was built on Greek mythology (and Norse, at least today), Dante's Inferno would do the same with Christianity, a creative decision that may seem a bit strange at first but was perfectly executed.
Very much in tune with the custom of that time, Dante's Inferno has a system of "upgrades" with skill points, which in turn are divided into virtue and cruelty, benefiting from the types of attacks and weapons we use in combat.
Although the game from Visceral Games and Electronic Arts lacks the level of polish that characterizes other exponents of the genre in terms of gameplay, this way of segmenting it is precisely what gives freshness to a somewhat crude combat system that could start to become quickly monotonous, in Dante's Inferno we have the ability to "absolve" or "torture" the souls of our enemies, as well as that of various historical figures that we will find in the 9 circles of hell.
Clearly this is a video game that is limited by the technical capabilities of the consoles on which it was released, however, I feel that these same limitations are what give the overall experience a lot of charisma, help to give it focus and make the game progress in this murky but well-designed hellish world is exciting.

El hack n' slash es un género que no suele recibir el aprecio que se merece, y es que aparte de aquellos títulos iconicos que todos conocemos (Devil May Cry y God of War), existen muy pocos ejemplos de juegos que sepan usar el formato de forma eficiente.
Y a pesar de que siento que Dante's Inferno es dolorosamente similar a los ejemplos que acabo de mencionar, esto no borra el hecho de que es una de las exploraciones modernas al hack n' slash que existen.
Verán, Dante's Inferno es un juego de Playstation 3, Xbox 360 y Playstation Portable que fue estrenado en el 2010, tomando varios elementos de la divina comedia de Dante Alighieri para narrar una historia en dónde un guerrero debe descender al infierno para salvar a su amada Beatriz.
La razón por la que está premisa funciona tan bien es porque sin necesidad de caer en la complejidad narrativa es capaz de brindarnos una serie de escenarios, personajes y armas que, adaptando vagamente las descripciones presentadas en el icónico poema, se convierten en una mezcla perfecta para un juego simple y divertido que a su vez cuenta con su propia identidad estética.
Si god of war se construía sobre la mitología griega (Y nórdica, al menos en la actualidad), Dante's Inferno haría esto mismo con el cristianismo, una decisión creativo que puede resultar un poco extraña al principio pero que fue ejecutada a la perfección.
Muy en tono con la costumbre de esa época, Dante's Inferno cuenta con un sistema de "mejoras" con puntos de habilidad, los cuales a su vez se dividen en virtud y crueldad, viéndose beneficiados de que tipos de ataques y armas usamos en combate.
Aunque el juego de Visceral Games y Electronic Arts carece del nivel de pulido que caracteriza a otros exponentes del género en términos de jugabilidad, esta forma de segmentarlo es lo que precisamente le da frescura a un sistema de combate un poco tosco que podría empezar a volverse monótono rápidamente, en Dante's Inferno tenemos la capacidad de "absolver" o "torturas" las almas de nuestros enemigos, así como la de varios figuras históricas que nos encontraremos en los 9 círculos del infierno.
Claramente este es un videojuego que se ve limitado por las capacidades técnicas de las consolas en las cuales se estrenó, no obstante, siento que estás mismas limitaciones son las que le brindan mucho carisma a la experiencia general, ayudan a darle enfoque y hacen que el progreso en este mundo infernal turbio pero bien diseñado sea emocionante.
