Reflecting on Spider-Man (2000)

Before there was a Spiderman PS4, every time I was asked about my favorite superhero game I only had two predefined answers: The original Spiderman video game for Playstation ONE, as well as Arkham Asylum and its acclaimed sequel.

It is ironic that a medium as interactive as videogames does not have such a strong relationship with the superhero market, I am not saying that they don't exist, obviously they do, but these productions are far from being as abundant as when we talk about cinema, television or the same comics.

Despite the fact that time has not treated the gameplay of Spiderman (2000) well and many more polished experiences have emerged, I have always had a soft spot for this humble installment, especially when it comes to its ability to include many options and mechanics that later would be the rule within the genre.

We are talking about more than two decades, and until recently this collaboration between Activision and Neversoft (which, by the way, used the same graphics engine as the Tony Hawk Pro Skater classics) was one of the most substantial encyclopedias of the universe that surrounded to Peter Parker, with all the characters that come with it, alternate costumes, comic book information, and an original but fun story.

When I draw parallels between this game and the first two Arkham installments I never mean the gameplay, in fact I consider this to be an insult to Rocksteady's brilliant work... Instead, I like to focus a bit more on how both cleverly synthesize all the pieces of literature, film and television that surrounded its protagonists, to create a unique version that knows how to pay homage and innovate at the same time.

In the case of Batman, for example, we found ourselves with an aesthetic close to Burton and the animated series, added to the realistic elements that Christopher Nolan accustomed us to with his The Dark Knight trilogy, while Spiderman PSX acquired the visual style nineties of the children's series, mixed with the visual agility of artists like Todd McFarlane.

In both cases the result is obvious: Video games end up feeling like timeless representations of these popular culture figures, respecting their respective sources without needing to refrain from taking risks.

And it is a pity that Spiderman's gameplay is so clumsy, without a doubt, any type of remastering in that sense would do him good.

Antes de que existiera Spiderman PS4, cada vez que me preguntaban por mi juego de superheroe favoritos solo tenía dos respuestas predefinidas: El videojuego original de Spiderman para Playstation ONE, así como Arkham Asylum y su aclamada secuela.

Es irónico que un un medio tan interactivo cómo lo son los videojuegos, no tenga una relación tan fuerte con el mercado de los héroes, no digo que existan, obviamente, pero estás producciones distan de ser tan abundantes como cuando hablamos de cine, televisión o los mismos cómics.

A pesar de que el tiempo no ha tratado bien la jugabilidad de Spiderman (2000) y han surgido muchas experiencias más pulidas, siempre he tenido muchísima debilidad por esta humilde entrega, especialmente cuando se trata de su capacidad para incluir muchas opciones y mecánicas que posteriormente serían la regla dentro del género.

Estamos hablando de más de dos décadas, y es que hasta hace poco está colaboración de Activision con Neversoft (Que por cierto, empleaba el mismo motor gráfico que los clásicos de Tony Hawk Pro Skater) resultaba una de las enciclopedias más sustanciosas del universo que rodeaba a Peter Parker, con todos los personajes que conlleva, trajes alternativos, información sobre cómics y una historia original pero divertida.

Cuando establezco paralelismos entre este juego y las dos entregas iniciales Arkham nunca me refiero al gameplay, de hecho, considero que esto sería una ofensa para la brillante obra de Rocksteady... En cambio, me gusta enfocarme un poco más en como ambas hábilmente sintetizan todas las piezas de literatura, cine y televisión que rodeaban a sus protagonistas, para crear una versión única que sabe rendir homenaje e innovar al mismo tiempo.

En el caso de Batman, por ejemplo, nos encontrábamos con una estética cercana a Burton y la serie animada, sumada a los elementos realistas a los que Cristopher Nolan nos acostumbró con su trilogía de The Dark Knight, mientras que Spiderman PSX adquiría el estilo visual noventero de la serie para niños, mezclada con la agilidad visual de artistas como Todd McFarlane.

En ambos casos el resultado es obvio: Los videojuegos terminan sintiéndose como representaciones atemporales de estas figuras de la cultura popular, que respetan sus respectivas fuentes sin necesidad de abstenerse de tomar riesgos.

Y es que es una lastima que el gameplay de Spiderman sea tan torpe, sin duda, le caería muy bien cualquier tipo de remasterización en ese sentido.
