I remember those days when the idea of having a Nintendo game for mobile devices seemed crazy. A company that had always been known for being extremely secretive about the hardware on which its software was allowed, fighting against a trend that was increasingly giving them more and more reasons to enter the smartphone market.
However, all this changed in mid-2016 with the launch of a small game called "Pokémon GO." While we remember that this franchise isn't exclusively Nintendo's, it would set an important precedent within the mobile industry, especially considering that it has been one of the most significant social phenomena of recent decades.
And although over time, there hasn't been another Pokémon foray into our phones that has achieved the same impact as GO, I find it interesting that these experiments are becoming more and more common, and I've personally dedicated quite a bit of time to gems like the recent Pokémon Trading Card Pocket, or, even, Pokémon Unite.
Within this panorama emerges "Pokémon Friends," a fairly casual video game that was released a couple of days ago and promises to be a rather relaxing experience.
The concept is simple and effective: we have a series of games that are unlocked daily, and if we complete them well, we can use the rewards (colored threads) to make plush toys of different Pokémon that we can use to decorate or trade.
Pokémon Friends intentionally limits our daily play sessions, lacking the "addiction" factor that has characterized titles like Pokémon TCGP, but creating a solid foundation that can keep us hooked for the long term.
The games are well-designed and easy to understand, approaching in aesthetic terms something like Big Brain Academy Wii Degree or a less irreverent version of Wario Ware.
Being version 1.0, its game modes other than "unravel" (the main mode) are limited, but I feel that new things can be added as the months go by.
If I had to define it with a single word, it would be "harmless." I like the music, the visual design of all the levels and the interface, and I like the idea of being able to decorate a virtual room with all the stuffed animals and furniture we collect.
Would you give it a try?
