There are games that I consider ideal to play in the mornings while having a coffee. They are usually titles that manage to relax me and that, for the most part, are quite simple to play. On this occasion, while continuing my search for games of this style, I came across A Monster's Expedition, a relaxing puzzle title that, despite not having very complex mechanics, can be quite challenging.
As usual in most of these games, there is not a very concrete story. We start as a small nameless character in the middle of an island surrounded by trees. If you look around you will see that there are more islands surrounding you, but they are separated by small water channels, so you must find a way to cross them in order to advance.
The mechanics of the game is very simple. If we touch the trees we will be able to break them and keep the trunk, the objective is to take these trunks to the water channels and use them as bridges. Normally the complexity in the first zones will be in knowing how to cut the trunk and in which direction to push it.
As we move between islands, we come across small "monuments" that are everyday objects, like a coffee cup, a cereal box, a float, etc. From what I could understand, since they don't explain anything to you, we are supposed to be some kind of monster and these islands represent a museum of humanity.
One detail that I quite liked is that the game mechanics evolve as we go deeper into more islands. I had the feeling that it would always be about cutting down small logs and finding a way to place them, but as we progress, we encounter different types of trees. For example, a larger tree with a trunk that spans more space, forcing us to analyze the terrain and figure out how to get it to the desired river crossing.
There will also be times when we reach the end of an area and we have no more islands to explore. In these cases, there will be two options: the first will be to find a way to join two logs in the water to make a small raft and propel us to another point of the map. The second is that, depending on the island, there may be a mailbox that allows us to teleport to another area.
The goal of the game is to discover all the islands, which can be translated into completing all the puzzles. When we use the fast travel letterbox, we see the map in its fullness and can observe how far we have progressed. Although it may not seem like it the game can be very challenging. On the more advanced islands, I encountered several puzzles that had me staring at the screen for several minutes, trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.
I've always said that these types of games relax me, despite the fact that they are not titles designed for that. But in this case, A Monster's Expedition does make an effort to make you feel calm and soothing. The game has a very light soundtrack, almost imperceptible, so you can hear the sound of water running through the canals and the leaves of the trees moving in the wind.
I'm not sure it's one of the best games in the genre by a long shot, but it does manage to give you that difficulty you're usually looking for when you get into a puzzle title. Also, I love the cozy theme it has. Although I played the PC version, these types of games have always seemed ideal for me to play on a cell phone. Unfortunately it's only on iOS, it doesn't exist on Android. But well, if you have the chance to play any of its versions, I highly recommend it. I think it can hook more than one, regardless of whether or not you are a fan of puzzles.

Hay juegos que considero ideales para jugar en las mañanas mientras me tomo un café. Suelen ser títulos que logran relajarme y que, en su mayoría, son bastante simples de jugar. En esta ocasión, mientras continuaba en mi búsqueda de juegos de este estilo, me encontré con A Monster’s Expedition, un relajante título de puzles que, pese a no tener mecánicas muy complejas, puede llegar a ser bastante desafiante.
Como siempre en la mayoría de estos juegos no existe una historia muy concreta. Comenzamos siendo un pequeño personaje sin nombre en medio de una isla rodeada de árboles. Si miramos alrededor veremos que hay más islas rodeándonos, pero las separan pequeños canales de agua, por lo que debemos hallar la forma de cruzarlos para poder avanzar.
La mecánica del juego es muy simple. Si tocamos los arboles podremos romperlos y quedarnos con el tronco, el objetivo es llevar estos troncos a los canales de agua y usarlos como puentes. Normalmente la complejidad en las primeras zonas estará en saber cómo cortar el tronco y hacia que dirección empujarlo.
A medida que avanzamos entre islas, nos encontramos con pequeños “monumentos” que son objetos cotidianos, como una taza de café, una caja de cereales, un flotador, etc. Por lo que pude entender, ya que no te explican nada, se supone que somos una especie de monstruo y estas islas representan un museo de la humanidad.
Un detalle que me gustó bastante es que la mecánica del juego evoluciona a medida que nos adentramos en más islas. Me daba la sensación de que siempre sería cortar los troncos pequeños y hallar la manera de colocarlos, pero conforme progresamos, nos encontramos con distintos tipos de árboles. Por ejemplo, un árbol más grande con un tronco que abarca más espacio, lo que nos obliga a analizar el terreno y descifrar cómo llevarlo al cruce del río deseado.
También habrá momentos en los que lleguemos al final de una zona y no tengamos más islas para explorar. En estos casos, habrá dos opciones: la primera será encontrar la manera de unir dos troncos en el agua para fabricar una pequeña balsa e impulsarnos a otra punta del mapa. La segunda es que, dependiendo de la isla, puede haber un buzón que nos permita teletransportarnos a otra zona.
El objetivo del juego es descubrir todas las islas, lo que puede traducirse en completar todos los puzles. Cuando usamos el buzón de viaje rápido, vemos el mapa en su plenitud y podemos observar cuánto hemos progresado. Aunque no lo parezca el juego puede ser muy desafiante. En las islas más avanzadas, me encontré con varios puzles que me tuvieron mirando la pantalla por varios minutos, intentando comprender qué se suponía que debía hacer.
Siempre he dicho que este tipo de juegos me relajan, a pesar de que no son títulos pensados para eso. Pero en este caso, A Monster’s Expedition sí se esfuerza por hacerte sentir tranquilo y calmado. El juego tiene una banda sonora muy leve, casi imperceptible, para que puedas escuchar el ruido del agua corriendo por los canales y las hojas de los árboles moviéndose con el viento.
Para acabar, diré que no creo que sea de los mejores juegos del género ni mucho menos, pero logra darte esa dificultad que sueles buscar cuando te metes en un título de puzles. Además, me encanta la temática acogedora que tiene. Aunque yo jugué a la versión de PC, este tipo de juegos siempre me han parecido ideales para jugar en un celular. Desgraciadamente solo está en iOS, no existe en Android. Pero bueno, si tienes la posibilidad de jugar alguna de sus versiones, lo recomiendo bastante. Creo que puede enganchar a más de uno, independientemente de si es o no fanático de los puzles.
