It seems that I've entered the loop of strategy games, I don't know why, but lately it is the genre that I most want to try and luckily I have several games on my to-play list to satisfy this sudden interest. On this occasion I wanted to try Ash of Gods: The Way, a turn-based strategy and deck-building game with a much more extensive depth than I expected.
The story tells us that a war is about to begin at the hands of the Frisian region, however, the generals use a new game to determine who will rule, a game of strategy where only the most astute will be able to win. That is why, if we want to prevent our small region from being conquered by the Frisians, we must master the game and stand up to them. We will control Finn, a boy who lost his family in a war in the past and now has the duty to avenge all the fallen. The story will expand as we progress, as the game gives enough importance and every so often we will get new narrative.
As for the gameplay; We will have a board where we can see our characters, at each end of this board there will be a commander, ours and the opponent's, to win normally we will have to reach the other end and take away all the life points of the enemy commander. To achieve this we will have to deploy our warriors, each turn we can release a character on the battlefield and this will gradually advance.
These characters will always advance in a straight line, we can only move them from left to right before the end of the turn, but they will always go forward, so the strategy is to place them in the same lane where there is an enemy so that they can find and attack. If there is no enemy, our character will continue until he reaches the rival commander and will damage him.
Despite everything I have mentioned, the game has a motto that says: Every combat is different. And this applies from the first minute, because as we progress we will see that each confrontation will have new rules, such as forcing us to win the game using only one character, that the enemy starts the game with 12 soldiers deployed and we must adapt to that, start the game without a commander and the victory is defined by a duel, and countless other things that I could not mention in a single post but that most of the time will completely change the gameplay.
In addition to the character cards, there will also be support cards, which will allow us to give a small advantage to our warrior in the middle of the battle. Each turn we will be able to use only one support card, although this may change depending on the rules of the combat. Normally these cards will give us advantages such as increasing 4 attack points, 1 life point and so on, although as we advance we will gain cards with more complex effects and mechanics.
Something I loved is that each card has a synergy, I mean; there will be cards that can only be used with characters belonging to the genre "bandit", others will only be compatible with "soldiers", this means that the decks we build will have their own themes, a deck of bandits, a deck of soldiers, and so on. And this will expand as we progress and discover new types of cards.
Every card in our arsenal can be upgraded, character cards will require a unique type of experience that we obtain by winning fights, while support cards will require gold, which we also obtain by winning fights.
And in addition to everything I've already said, the game also has small touches of graphic novel. Throughout the adventure we will find ourselves in situations that will ask us to make decisions, and although it is true that in many of them it doesn't matter what we answer, there will be key moments that will define the type of ending we will get at the end of the game.
As you may have appreciated, it is a quite extensive game. And although I may have left some things out, I hope I have been able to mention the most important aspects. Honestly, I think it's one of the few games where the phrase "every fight is different" really applies. It's amazing how each confrontation feels different in some way. If you have an affinity for strategy, you should give it a chance, always keeping in mind the type of game it is. Don't expect super spectacular attacks or things like that, as it's focused more on the tactical part, which can be boring for some and entertaining for others.

Parece que eh entrado en el bucle de los juegos de estrategia, no sé por qué, pero últimamente es el género que más me apetece probar y por suerte tengo varios juegos en mi lista de pendientes para saciar este interés repentino. En esta ocasión quise probar Ash of Gods: The Way, un juego de estrategia por turnos y construcción de mazos con una profundidad mucho más extensa de lo que me esperaba.
La historia nos dice que una guerra está apunto de comenzar a manos de la región de Frisia, sin embargo, los generales usan un nuevo juego para determinar quien gobernará, un juego de estrategia donde solo los más astutos serán capaces de vencer. Es por todo esto que, si queremos evitar que nuestra pequeña región sea conquistada por los frisones, debemos dominar el juego y plantarles cara. Nosotros controlaremos a Finn, un niño que perdió a su familia en una guerra del pasado y que ahora tiene el deber de vengar a todos los caídos. La historia se irá expandiendo a medida que progresemos, ya que el juego le da bastante importancia y cada cierto tiempo iremos obteniendo nueva narrativa.
En cuanto a la jugabilidad; Tendremos un tablero donde podremos ver a nuestros personajes, en cada punta de este tablero habrá un comandante, el nuestro y el del rival, para ganar normalmente habrá que llegar hasta la otra punta y quitarle todos los puntos de vida al comandante enemigo. Para lograr esto tendremos que desplegar a nuestros guerreros, cada turno podremos soltar a un personaje en el campo de batalla y este irá avanzando poco a poco.
Estos personajes siempre avanzaran en línea recta, nosotros solo podremos moverlos de izquierda a derecha antes de acabar el turno, pero siempre irán hacia adelante, por lo que la estrategia es buscar colocarlos en el mismo carril donde esté un enemigo para que pueda encontrarlo y atacar. En caso de que no haya enemigo nuestro personaje seguirá hasta llegar al comandante rival y le hará daño.
A pesar de todo lo que he mencionado, el juego tiene un lema que dice: Cada combate es diferente. Y esto se aplica desde el primer minuto, ya que conforme vayamos progresando iremos viendo que cada enfrentamiento tendrá reglas nuevas, como por ejemplo el obligarnos a ganar la partida usando solo un personaje, que el enemigo comience la partida con 12 soldados desplegados y debamos adaptarnos a eso, comenzar la partida sin comandante y que la victoria la defina un duelo, y un sinfín de cosas más que no podría mencionar en una sola publicación pero que en la mayoría de veces cambiarán completamente el gameplay.
Además de las cartas de personajes también estarán las cartas de apoyo, que nos permitirán darle una pequeña ventaja a nuestro guerrero en mitad de la batalla. Cada turno podremos usar solo una carta de apoyo, aunque esto puede cambiar dependiendo de las reglas del combate. Normalmente estas cartas nos darán ventajas como aumentar 4 puntos de ataque, 1 punto de vida y cosas así, aunque mientras más avancemos iremos ganando cartas con efectos y mecánicas más complejas.
Algo que me encantó es que cada carta tiene una sinergia, me explico; Habrá cartas que solo puedan usarse con personajes pertenecientes al género “bandido”, otras solo serán compatibles con “soldados berkaneses”, esto quiere decir que los mazos que construyamos tendrán sus propias temáticas, un mazo de bandidos, un mazo de soldados, etc. Y esto se irá expandiendo a medida que progresemos y descubramos nuevos tipos de cartas.
Cada carta en nuestro arsenal podrá mejorarse, las cartas de personajes necesitarán un tipo de experiencia única que obtendremos al ganar combates, mientras que las cartas de apoyo nos pedirán oro, el cual también obtenemos al ganar combates.
Y sumado a todo lo que ya he dicho, el juego también tiene pequeños toques de novela gráfica. A lo largo de la aventura nos encontraremos en situaciones que nos pedirán tomar decisiones, y aunque es cierto que en muchas de ellas da igual que respondamos, habrá momentos clave que definirán el tipo de final que obtendremos al acabar el juego.
Como habrán podido apreciar, es un juego es bastante extenso. Y aunque quizás me dejo alguna cosa en el tintero, espero haber podido mencionar los aspectos más importantes. Sinceramente, creo que es uno de los pocos juegos donde la frase “cada combate es distinto” realmente se aplica. Es increíble cómo cada enfrentamiento se siente diferente de alguna manera. Si tienes afinidad por la estrategia, deberías darle una oportunidad, siempre teniendo en cuenta el tipo de juego que es. No esperes ataques súper espectaculares o cosas de ese estilo, ya que está enfocado más en la parte táctica, lo que puede ser aburrido para algunos y entretenido para otros.
