When I hear about a "Free to play" game for cell phones, I automatically think of pay to win. This is why Marvel Snap has been a very, very pleasant surprise for me, and not only because it is quite "friendly" or "fair" to players who prefer not to invest money, but because besides all this, the game is really fun and addictive, I haven't seen something of this style for a long time, so much so that I have decided to talk a little about it.
We are facing a card game where we will have to create our deck to face other players. We will have turns of limited duration where we will make our moves depending on the hand we have available at that time. The game will match us with other players who have the same number of cards as us, to try to make the confrontation as balanced as possible.
Mechanically, although it may sound confusing it is quite simple; There will be three scenarios, we can choose where to place our cards, each card will have an amount of power that will add points to the scenario where it has been placed, if for example our Captain America has a power of 3, the scenario where it has been placed will add 3 points on our side. There are 6 turns in total and, to win, we will have to be above our opponent in 2 of the 3 scenarios.
These scenarios will be random in all games and will usually cause some effect on our cards such as; subtract one point of power, add 2 points, move our cards on turn 5, destroy all cards played and many more. Most of these effects will be activated only on the cards played in the corresponding scenario, so it will depend on the player what strategy he wants to follow or what benefits his deck.
And speaking of decks, the cards will also have unique effects with which we will be able to devise strategies. These effects will be divided in two; the revelation ones, which will be activated only once when we place the card on the field, and the continuous ones, which are usually more passive and will be maintained during the whole game. A quick example of a revelation effect is when we place a card and it allows us to take another card from the deck, while a continuous effect could be to increase the power of all the cards until the end of the confrontation. Both of these effects will be visually cool when in combat.
Another thing to take into account will be the energy, this will decide which cards we will be able to play. In the first turn we will have one of energy, in turn two we will have two of energy and so on until turn 6. Each card will have its energy cost, which will go from 1 to 6 and, as it may be obvious, the cards with higher cost will be stronger, either because they will have more power or because they will have some special effect.
The way we will get new cards will be by leveling up our old cards. Every time we level up one of our cards, it will evolve, get a visual upgrade and give us experience for collection level. For each collection level raised we will get various rewards such as upgrade materials and random cards. The best of all is that all these improvements are purely aesthetic, an improved card will only look better visually than an unimproved one, both will have the same performance and statistics, which completely cancels the pay to win.
The progress of the game is measured by divisions; Iron, bronze, silver, gold, all that. Each game won will give us some division points to climb positions, but if we lose, points will be subtracted, basically as in any competitive game, although here comes a mechanic of the game called SNAP.
During the confrontations we will see a small cube on top, if we touch it we will SNAP our opponent, this means that, if we win, we will get the double of division points, but it also means that, if we lose, we will be subtracted the double. It is a risk/benefit mechanic, although there will be times when you will know that you have won the game and the best decision will be to SNAP your opponent, but as always it will depend on each player.
Honestly it is a title that I am enjoying a lot and I am quite hooked. I was not lying when I said that the game was friendly to players who do not invest, as you have seen, the competitive part is not related to the money you spend, because yes, the game has a store where if you want, you can leave a few dollars to get new cards faster, but when playing you will be matched with players who have the same level of collection as you, if I have only 25 cards, I will not be matched with someone who has 90. All this makes the matches more even and, therefore, more fun.
The game is still in early access, although personally I see it quite complete and I did not find any error, maybe my only complaint is that the PC version, which is on Steam, looks as if you were using an emulator, I would like in the future to have its own interface on PC, where you can see bigger cards, designs, all that. Anyway I recommend to try it, it's very fun and it's free, if you can play it on your phone maybe it's the best option, but in case you can't, on PC it works pretty well.

Cuando oigo hablar de un juego “Free to play” para móviles, automáticamente pienso en pay to win. Es por esto que Marvel Snap ha sido una muy, muy grata sorpresa para mí, y no solo por ser bastante “amigable” o “justo” con los jugadores que prefieren no invertir dinero, sino porque además de todo esto, el juego es realmente divertido y adictivo, hace mucho que no veía algo de este estilo, tanto así que he decidido hablar un poco acerca de él.
Estamos ante un juego de cartas donde deberemos crear nuestro mazo para enfrentarnos a otros jugadores. Tendremos turnos de duración limitada donde haremos nuestros movimientos en función a la mano que tengamos disponible en ese entonces. El juego nos emparejará con otros jugadores que tengan el mismo numero de cartas que nosotros, para intentar que el enfrentamiento esté lo más equilibrado posible.
Mecánicamente, aunque pueda sonar confuso es bastante simple; Habrá tres escenarios, nosotros podremos elegir donde colocar nuestras cartas, cada carta tendrá una cantidad de poder que sumará puntos al escenario donde haya sido colocada, si por ejemplo nuestro Capitán América tiene un poder de 3, el escenario donde haya sido puesto sumará 3 puntos de nuestro lado. Son 6 turnos en total y, para ganar, habrá que quedar por encima de nuestro oponente en 2 de los 3 escenarios.
Estos escenarios serán aleatorios en todas las partidas y normalmente causarán algún efecto en nuestras cartas como; Restarnos un punto de poder, sumarnos 2 puntos, movernos las cartas en el turno 5, destruir todas las cartas jugadas y muchos más. La mayoría de estos efectos se activarán solo en las cartas jugadas en el escenario correspondiente, por lo que dependerá del jugador que estrategia quiere seguir o le beneficia a su mazo.
Y hablando de mazos, las cartas también tendrán efectos únicos con los que podremos idear estrategias. Estos efectos estarán divididos en dos; Los de revelación, que se activarán una sola vez cuando coloquemos la carta en el campo, y los continuos, que suelen ser mas pasivos y se mantendrán durante toda la partida. Un ejemplo rápido de un efecto de revelación es cuando colocamos una carta y nos permite tomar otra del mazo, mientras que un efecto continuo podría ser aumentar el poder de todas las cartas hasta que acabe el enfrentamiento. Ambos efectos serán visualmente geniales al momento de estar en combate.
Otra cosa a tener en cuenta será la energía, esta decidirá que cartas podremos jugar. En el primer turno tendremos uno de energía, en el turno dos tendremos dos de energía y así sucesivamente hasta el turno 6. Cada carta tendrá su coste de energía, los cuales irán del 1 al 6 y, como puede ser obvio, las cartas de mayor coste serán más fuertes, ya sea porque tendrán un mayor poder o porque contaran con algún efecto especial.
La forma en la que conseguiremos cartas nuevas será subiendo de nivel nuestras cartas viejas. Cada vez que subamos de nivel una de nuestras cartas, está evolucionará, obtendrá una mejora visual y nos dará experiencia para el nivel de colección. Por cada nivel de colección subido obtendremos varias recompensas como materiales de mejora y cartas aleatorias. Lo mejor de todo es que todas estas mejoras son netamente estéticas, una carta mejorada solo se verá mejor visualmente que una sin mejorar, ambas tendrán el mismo funcionamiento y estadísticas, lo cual anula completamente el pay to win.
El progreso del juego se mide por divisiones; Hierro, bronce, plata, oro, todo eso. Cada partida ganada nos dará unos puntos de división para ir escalando posiciones, pero si perdemos, nos restaran puntos, básicamente como en cualquier juego competitivo, aunque acá entra una mecánica propia del juego llamada SNAP.
Durante los enfrentamientos veremos un pequeño cubo arriba, si lo tocamos haremos SNAP a nuestro oponente, esto significa que, si ganamos, obtendremos el doble de puntos de división, pero también significa que, si perdemos, nos restaran el doble. Es una mecánica riesgo/beneficio, aunque habrá momentos en los que sabrás que tienes ganada la partida y la mejor decisión será hacerle SNAP al rival, pero como siempre dependerá de cada quien.
Sinceramente es un título que estoy disfrutando mucho y al que estoy bastante enganchado, no mentía cuando dije que el juego era amigable con los jugadores que no invierten, como habrán visto la parte competitiva no tiene relación alguna con el dinero que gastes, porque si, el juego tiene una tienda donde si quieres, puedes dejarte unos cuantos dólares para obtener cartas nuevas más rápido, pero a la hora de jugar te emparejaran con jugadores que tengan el mismo nivel de colección que tú, si yo tengo solo 25 cartas, no me emparejaran con alguien que tenga 90. Todo esto hace que los enfrentamientos sean más igualados y, por ende, más divertidos.
El juego sigue estando en acceso anticipado, aunque en lo personal lo veo bastante completo y no me encontré ningún error, quizás mi única queja es que la versión de PC, que está en Steam, se ve como si usases un emulador, me gustaría que en un futuro tenga una interfaz propia en PC, donde se vean mas grandes las cartas, los diseños, todo eso. Igualmente recomiendo probarlo, es muy divertido y además es gratis, si pueden jugarlo en su teléfono quizás sea la mejor opción, pero en caso de que no, en PC funciona bastante bien.
