You may already know that I've been playing a lot of VRChat lately
I've always wanted my own avatar. Something special just for me, I see so many people on VRChat with their own custom avatars so I'm feeling very left out.
But rather than pay for one to be made I decided to learn to make them myself.
I've used blender3D and unity before!
I'm familiar with Blender3D, at least. version 2.6 which is the last version I ever used. I had followed a tutorial to make an animated treasure chest, that was many years ago.
Fortunately it seems I've retained at least some useful info about Blender3D so picking it up again and doing things wasn't too difficult. I also had my brother @yamibobo helping me out as he's much more familiar with a lot of tricks to speed up the modeling process.
Say hello to mini dino boi!
This derpy little dino thing is my avatar that I made. The whole Idea of the session was to build something simple from beginning to published avatar. I managed to do so in 6 hours!
The modelling part took the longest time, unity is actually something I'm very familiar with as I've used it to 'try' make games before.
I actually streamed the whole session of building the avatar
also this is how messed up it ended up being. :D
ok it's not perfect.. but I still love it!
For 6 hours of work I am super happy that I actually had something the worked in game.
Sure.. the RIG is really messed up and it deforms weirdly and the camera location is way off.. haha But it's a good start.
I'm going to keep working on this avatar to fix the various issues and add more features, as I have plenty of ideas to make it even more fun.
There are so many systems and features for avatars that I have yet to touch!
Some of the things I plan to try practice next is Retopology in blender3D to make the avatar more efficient as well as more practice creating skeletal rigs and trying out making some animations in blender.
On the unity side I plan to look into fiddling around with the emote gizmo system and maybe look into shaders and other various features.
I'll likely stream ever time to do work on the avatar as it keeps me focused and also lets me get feedback and advice from viewers!
