With all the pride in the world, I am a hyper-fixated mess when it comes to the things I love. I am a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts, a huge fan of Monster Hunter, and a HUGE fan of Celeste. AND I LIKE TO SHOW IT. When I like something, I can't stop talking about it, and after I exhaust the franchises I just mentioned, you might think, "Finally, she ran out of things to talk about." Well, you're SCREWED (with lots of love).

Having said all that and feeling quite pleased with myself (please don't take me seriously haha), today I wanted to talk about a franchise that I won't be abandoning anytime soon, my new obsession, and one that since last year has given me wonderful moments and probably the best side stories and side quests in video games. I'm obviously talking about Yakuza, a franchise I've already discussed and even made a post suggesting how you could start with it. But I won't repeat myself, and this time I'll go straight to talking about the game.

Yakuza began on the PS2 as a franchise that took a while to find its audience, much like Monster Hunter. It had its loyal players, but it wasn't until several years later that it finally took off. And let me tell you, it wasn't for lack of quality, it's just one of those Japanese things that takes time to be discovered by the mainstream.

However, recommending this game today is a bit questionable. It's not bad at all, but it's tied to the limitations of the PS2, and if you're not used to it, you might find it difficult. Still, it has details that no other game in the franchise maintained. For example, the physics of Kiryu's suit are wonderfully good. Later, it became a layer of clothing stuck to his body, but these are just small details.

As for the story, it introduces us to a universe where the story has already been going on for quite some time. Kazuma Kiryu is a yakuza with a huge reputation, the legendary "Dragon of Dojima," someone feared and respected on the streets. The game begins when Kiryu is on the verge of starting his own family within the Yakuza, but an event occurs that changes his life and lands him in prison for 10 years.

Akira Nishikiyama, Kiryu's childhood friend, murdered the patriarch of their family, Sohei Dojima, who had attempted to rape Yumi, a mutual friend of Kiryu and Nishiki. Everything happens very quickly, and by the time Kiryu arrives at the scene, it's all over. He tells Nishiki to take Yumi and escape, while he takes the blame, spending 10 years in prison with a tarnished name and an uncertain future.

This isn't a spoiler—literally, all of this happens within the first 30 minutes of the game. It's not until Kiryu gets out of prison that things start to turn around again. Many things have changed, but a robbery shakes the Tojo Clan, to which the Dojima family and once Kiryu belonged. 10 billion yen are stolen from the clan's savings, and all the family leaders want an explanation at the meeting, which was called by Nishiki, who in Kiryu's 10-year absence has risen to become the leader of his own family.

This is all I'll say about the game's story, as it's just the introduction during the first hour or so. Let's talk about the other part of the game: the gameplay.

Yakuza comes from Shenmue, where combat isn't the main focus of the game. But unlike Shenmue, combat IS quite central in Yakuza, as except for some particular cases, everything in this game is resolved with fists, and this is something that belongs to Yakuza's identity. Here, the foundations of the Dragon style were laid, Kiryu's signature combat style that we'll see in this game and later games with some changes or improvements, but it all started here.

While the combat may feel quite clunky by today's standards, I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to finish. As you fight enemies, you gain experience and improve Kiryu's moveset and stats. Unlike later games, some upgrades are obtained in a more obscure way, but I was able to finish the game without issues. That said, there are a couple of things I'd like to mention.

First, in this game, I practically didn't do any side stories, another fundamental pillar of what defines Yakuza. It's not because there are few, it's because I couldn't find them. Unlike Yakuza 3 onwards, I found it very difficult to know where the side stories were, as there's no icon on the map to indicate them. During my playthrough, I only did about 15 out of the 78 (I think) that the game has, which is great considering it's the first game and already came with a lot of content.

Second, based on that, my combat didn't evolve much, and I practically finished the game with almost the same combos as when I started. This can get quite repetitive, but in my case, it didn't stop me from enjoying the game, as despite that, the combat was still very entertaining. That said, I can't ignore that someone used to more recent games might get tired of it quickly, which is why I bring you a better option.

If you want to start with Yakuza but experience the story in release order, then I recommend playing Yakuza Kiwami. It maintains the story of the first PS2 game, adds some things to connect with Yakuza 0, and most importantly, improves the gameplay, as it's basically Yakuza 0's gameplay on steroids. This speeds up progression a lot and adds very interesting things. So, unlike me, if you don't mind the mechanical evolution of the franchise and want to play the story in the order it was told, it's better to play Yakuza Kiwami (or start with Yakuza 0, which might be an even better option).

There's one last little thing I'll mention for historical value.
Despite being the first, Yakuza was released with an English dub, a pretty bad one, I must say, but it's one of those so-bad-it's-good dubs. It has sentimental value for those who played it that way back in the day, and as a meme, it's one of the best out there.

Personally, I used a ROM that restores the Japanese voices and fixes many text and translation errors, so if you want to experience the game with its dub or original voices, you have both options.

And that's it. Yakuza on the PS2 started everything that would come after. Maybe it didn't innovate much, but it definitely planted the seed for something much bigger, something that perhaps Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio didn't think would go this far, or maybe they did. But with its 20th anniversary just a few months away, all that's left is to look back fondly and admire everything they've achieved since then.

I hope to continue talking little by little about the rest of the Yakuza games and share my thoughts on them. But for now, if you want to play this one or have already played it (or Kiwami), tell me about your experience!

Dicho todo esto y quedándome muy a gusto, hoy quería hablar de una franquicia la cual no abandonaré en un buen tiempo, mi nueva obsesión y que desde el año pasado me ha dado momentos maravillosos y probablemente las mejores subhistorias y misiones secundarias de los videojuegos, hablo obviamente de Yakuza, franquicia de la que ya hablé y de hecho hice un post sugiriendo como podrían empezar con la franquicia, pero no me repetiré y esta vez iré directo a hablar del juego.

Yakuza empezó en la PS2 como una franquicia que tardó bastante en hallar su público, un poco como Monster Hunter, tenía a sus fieles jugadores pero no fue hasta varios años después que finalmente depegaría, y déjenme decirles que por falta de calidad no es, simplemente es de esas cosas japonesas que cuesta que sean descubiertas por el mainstream.

Sin embargo, a día de hoy recomendarles este juego es un poco cuestionable, no es malo en absoluto pero está atado a las limitaciones de la PS2 y no están acostumbrados probablemente se les dificulte, sin embargo tiene detalles que ningún otro juego de la franquicia mantuvo, por ejemplo, la física del traje de Kiryu es maravillosamente buena, posteriormente se convirtió en una capa de ropa pegada al cuerpo, pero son cositas pequeñas nomás.

Respecto a la historia, nos introduce en el universo en una historia que ya tiene bastantes años de haber empezado, Kazuma Kiryu es un yakuza con una enorme reputación, el legendario “Dragón de Dojima”, alguien temido y respetado en las calles. El juego empieza cuando Kiryu está a las puertas de iniciar su propia familia en la Yakuza, pero ocurre un hecho que cambiaría su vida y lo llevaría 10 años tras las rejas.

Akira Nishikiyama, amigo de la infancia de Kiryu, asesinó al patriarca de su familia, Sohei Dojima, el cual intentó violar a Yumi, amiga en común de Kiryu y Nishiki, todo pasa muy rápido y cuando Kiryu llega a la escena ya todo había ocurrido, por lo que le dice a Nishiki que se lleve a Yumi y escapen, asumiendo él la culpa y pasando 10 años en prisión con un nombre manchado y un futuro en incertidumbre.

Esto no es un spoiler, literalmente todo ocurre durante los primeros 30 minutos del juego, y no es sino hasta que Kiryu sale de prisión que las cosas empiezan a girar de nuevo, muchas cosas han cambiado, pero un robo sacude al Tojo Clan, al cual pertenece la familia Dojima y alguna vez Kiryu, son robados 10 Billones de Yenes de los ahorros del clan y todos los líderes de las familias quieren una explicación en la reunión, la cual fue convocada por Nishiki, que en los 10 años de ausencia de Kiryu escaló hasta convertirse en el lider de su propia familia.

Esto es todo lo que diré respecto a la historia del juego, pues es la introducción durante la primera hora y poco más, hablemos de la otra parte del juego, el gameplay.

Yakuza viene de Shenmue, donde su combate no es el foco principal del juego, pero a diferencia de Shenmue, el combate ES bastante principal, pues salvo por algunos casos particulares en este juego todo se resuelve a los golpes y es algo que pertenece a la identidad de Yakuza, aquí se sentaron las bases del estilo Dragon, el estilo de combate insignia de Kiryu y que veremos en este juego y juegos posteriores con algunos cambios o mejoras, pero todo empezó aquí.

Si bien el combate puede ser bastante tosco para estándares actuales, disfruté muchísimo el juego de principio a fin, pues conforme combates contra enemigos ganas experiencia y vas mejorando el moveset de Kiryu y sus estadísticas, a diferencia de juegos posteriores algunas mejoras se obtienen de forma un poco más obtusa, pero pude terminar el juego sin problemas, eso sí, hay un par de cosas que me gustaría mencionar.

Lo primero, es que en este juego prácticamente no hice subhistorias, otro pilar fundamental de lo que identifica a Yakuza y no es porque sean pocas, es que no las encontraba. A diferencia del Yakuza 3 en adelante, tuve muy difícil saber dónde estaban las subhistorias pues no hay un icono en el mapa que te las indique, durante mi partida solo hice unas 15 de las 78 (creo) que tiene el juego, lo cual es genial teniendo en cuenta que es el primer juego y ya venía con bastante contenido.

Lo segundo es que en base a eso, mi combate no evolucionó demasiado y prácticamente terminé el juego con casi los mismos combos que cuando empecé, esto puede hacerse bastante repetitivo pero en mi caso no me impidió disfrutar el juego pues a pesar de eso, seguía siendo un combate muy entretenido, eso sí, no puedo dejar pasar que seguramente a alguien que esté acostumbrado a juegos más recientes le puede cansar bastante rápido, es por eso que te traigo una mejor opción.

Si quieres empezar por Yakuza pero conocer la historia por orden de lanzamiento entonces te recomiendo jugar Yakuza Kiwami, mantiene la historia del primero de la PS2, añade algunas cosas para conectar con Yakuza 0, y lo importante, mejora el gameplay, pues es básicamente el gameplay de Yakuza 0 en esteroides, esto agiliza mucho la progresión y añade cosas muy interesantes, así que si, a diferencia de mi no te importa la evolución mecánica de la franquicia y quieres jugar la historia en el orden que se contó, mejor juega Yakuza Kiwami (o empieza por Yakuza 0, que puede ser incluso mejor opción).

Hay una última cosita que comento por valor histórico simplemente, y es que a pesar de ser el primero, Yakuza fue lanzado con doblaje al inglés, uno bastante malo debo decir, pero es esos doblajes tan malos que terminan siendo buenos, tiene un valor sentimental para quienes lo jugaron así en su momento, y como meme es de lo mejor que existe, personalmente utilicé una rom que restaura las voces en japonés y corrige muchos errores de texto y traducción, así que si desean experimentar el juego con su doblaje o sus voces originales, tienen ambas opciones también.

Y eso es todo, Yakuza de la PS2 da inicio a todo lo que vendría después, quizás no innovó demasiado pero definitivamente sembró la semilla de algo mucho más grande, algo que quizás Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio no pensó que llegaría a tanto, o quizás sí, pero a unos meses de su aniversario número 20, solo queda mirarlo con cariño y admirar todo lo que han logrado desde entonces.

Espero seguir hablando poco a poco del resto de juegos de Yakuza y contarles que me han parecido, pero de momento, si desean jugar este o ya lo jugaron (o Kiwami) ¡cuéntenme su experiencia!
