Have you ever wondered why pixelart style games are still made today? It is assumed that this medium was used because of the limitations of the time, all because before only a certain amount of pixels could be displayed on the screen and there was a limit of space on the cartridges that did not allow for a stunning visual aspect (it was quite difficult to give life to characters with so few possibilities being the first to achieve it Donkey Kong, where you could understand who you were controlling), but even today the pixelart is still alive in many videogames even though these limitations no longer exist since a long time ago, even getting to age quite well and causing the community to keep an immense love and appreciation for this style, either for nostalgia or because they love the way it looks. Meanwhile nowadays companies focus on improving the graphics to look like real life, trying to look as realistic as possible, and we can see that old games that had this approach aged poorly, looking unaesthetic or ugly. Leaving to shine an aspect that only the pixelart can achieve (the preservation of time) and causing that certain companies have a preference for this, as well as in terms of programming is easier or because it leaves more emphasis to the imagination, resulting in a wider range of possibilities.

Se supone que este medio fue utilizado por las limitaciones de la época, todo se debía a que antes solo se podían mostrar en pantalla cierta cantidad de píxeles y además había un límite de espacio en los cartuchos que no permitía dar para un aspecto visual despampanante (era bastante complicado dar vida a personajes con tan pocas posibilidades siendo el primero en conseguirlo Donkey Kong, donde podías comprender a quien controlabas), pero aún hoy en día el pixelart sigue vigente en muchos videojuegos aunque ya éstas limitaciones no existan desde hace mucho tiempo, llegando inclusive a envejecer bastante bien y causando que la comunidad le guarde un cariño y aprecio inmenso a este estilo, ya sea por nostalgia o porque les encanta cómo se ve. Mientras tanto actualmente las empresas se centran en mejorar los gráficos para parecerse a la vida real, intentando parecer lo más realista posible, pudiendo así observar que en los juegos viejos que tenían ésta propuesta envejecieron mal, luciendo poco estéticos o feos. Dejando a relucir un aspecto que solo el pixelart puede conseguir (la preservación del tiempo) y provocando que ciertas empresas tengan una preferencia por este, además de en cuanto a programación resulta más sencillo o porque deja más hincapié a la imaginación, dando como resultado un abanico de posibilidades más amplio.

Removing the pixel limit in pixelart sometimes causes the desired effect to be lost, obtaining in the process more fluidity and realism but preventing the player's brain from having to complete on its own what it sees; when the imagination is not given space we have a problem. Realism in video games is not something I like, when trying to resemble living beings as much as possible and not being able to extol the essence (by graphical limitations that do affect them), causes our receptors to fail and we see the 3D weird in old titles or when they get old, just look at games like Half Life, there are some exceptions where old video games like Resident Evil 4 still look great today (why they overexploit it by releasing a version every year).
Hay un factor psicológico que nos permite observar al día de buena manera a los juegos con pixelart y es que al limitar las animaciones o sprites de movimiento, lo que hace nuestro cerebro es completar la información mediante la imaginación, al usar pocos píxeles se provoca de forma inconsciente. Por esta razón usualmente no se suele hacer remasters de títulos de ésta índole porque prácticamente no hay nada que mejorar visualmente, quedando un producto casi idéntico o con nulas diferencias. Solo hace falta observar algunos títulos como los primeros Mario Bros o Sonic, que contando con sus "limitaciones" lucen impecables. Quitar el límite de píxeles en el pixelart algunas veces hace que se pierda el efecto deseado, obteniendo en el proceso más fluidez y realismo pero evitando que el cerebro del jugador tenga que completar por su propia cuenta lo que ve; cuando no se le da espacio a la imaginación tenemos un problema. El realismo en los videojuegos no es algo de mi agrado, al tratar de asemejarse a los seres vivos en lo máximo posible y al no poder ensalzar dicha esencia (por limitaciones gráficas que a ellos sí les afecta), causa que fallen nuestros receptores y veamos raro el 3D en títulos antiguos o cuando envejecen, solo hace falta observar juegos como Half Life, hay algunas excepciones donde videojuegos algo viejos como Resident Evil 4 aún se ven genial hoy en día (por algo lo sobreexplotan sacando una versión cada año).

El pixelart ha agarrado muchísima relevancia actual debido en gran parte a los juegos indie, son los que en su gran mayoría predomina este maravilloso estilo visual, otorgándonos en muchos casos verdaderas obras maestras que no todos saben apreciar. Tanto se ha expandido este estilo que hasta jóvenes que no crecieron en la época en la que todos los videojuegos lo poseían, tienen un aprecio por el mismo, dando a lugar a artistas muy jóvenes especializados en el pixelart. Llega a ser sorprendente que se puedan expresar ideas de esta forma que con gráficos hiperrealistas, habiendo casos de videojuegos que tenían la idea inicial de ser realistas pasándose después al arte de los píxeles porque encontraron una mayor facilidad de transmitir lo que se quería contar. No puedo dejar de pensar en aquéllas personas que desprecian este estilo visual solamente porque lo ven como algo anticuado, despreciando en el proceso grandes títulos, causando que éstos videojuegos pierdan relevancia o no se den a conocer lo suficiente, llegando a tener algunas veces cero reconocimiento de parte del público.

Por lo tanto, podemos llegar a la sencilla conclusión de que el pixelart se sigue utilizando hoy en día debido a que todavía resulta bastante útil y llamativo de cara al público, se consolidó como un estilo que logra atraer a nostálgicos de aquéllos que piensan que los videojuegos antiguos eran mejores además de captar nuevos adeptos quienes quedan encantados por las formas en que se transmiten las imágenes en pantalla. Transformándose incluso en una forma de arte, donde los artistas no necesitan estar inmersos dentro del mundo de los videojuegos para hacer una obra, lo cual se me hace muy curioso e interesante. Todo esto indica que tendremos quizás para toda la eternidad y existencia, videojuegos con este aspecto, videojuegos que son viejos seguirán teniendo un aspecto increíble y las futuras generaciones podrán apreciarlo creando un hermoso ciclo sin fin con los nuevos videojuegos pixelart de aquéllas épocas que vayan saliendo para el disfrute de los habitantes del planeta Tierra.
