Greetings fellow gamers. On this occasion I have returned to share with you a review and my opinions about a game that I met some time ago and that even today remains one of my favorites in its genre. I am referring to Papers Please.

First of all, I want to ask you two questions: Are you tired of always trying the same game genres, do you like games that make you think and challenge you? If your answer to both questions is yes, then Papers Please could become your favorite game.

Therefore, I invite you to join me in this review, where I will tell you all its details, some curious facts, the points I liked the most, among many other things. That said, fasten your seatbelts and we'll take off.

Plot.

In order for you to understand what the plot of the game is about, I start by telling you that Papers Please is an indie title, developed by Lucas Pope and released in 2013. The game puts you in the shoes of an immigration inspector, in a fictional republic called Arstotzka.

His or your job will be to check the documents of each person who arrives at the border and make a decision: to decide whether they enter or are deported.

At this point you may be imagining that the game may be very simple or even boring. But let me tell you that it is quite the opposite, as you will be put to the test. For example, you will have to make difficult decisions that will affect the story irreversibly.

Your moral convictions will also be tested, such as deciding whether it is better to obey the law or turn a blind eye. There are more challenges but we'll look at them later in the post.

Gameplay:

The moment you were surely waiting for has arrived, the section to see what the gameplay is like or in simple words, how to play.

The mechanics are as follows: every day you have to go to work as a customs inspector. For each person you serve, you will earn x amount of money. With that, you will pay for food, house rent, support your family, among other uses.

Knowing this, you already know the basis of the game. The more people you serve, the more money you earn. In case you don't earn enough, your family in the game will start to be in need and someone may even die.

And how do you play? Every day you will be given a rulebook. The only thing you have to do is to check that the documents that people bring comply with the rules, such as: that they are not expired, forged, that the photo is correct, among many others. As you advance in the game, the difficulty will increase.

In the event that you find a discrepancy, you have the power to deny the person entry into the country and you can even arrest them or as we say colloquially, take them prisoner. Haha. But not everything will be a piece of cake, because as I said before, you are going to be tested.

(Spoiler): an example is an elderly couple who wants to enter the country, one of them does not have the right documents and begs you to let him and her husband pass so as not to travel alone. If you are benevolent and let him pass, you will find out that he was actually carrying a bomb in his bag and then there will be consequences for this decision.

But that's just one example of many in the game. I assure you that it will become increasingly difficult to reject or approve a person.

Graphics and sound.

As for the visual aspect, you should not expect the latest generation graphics, the game has a pixelated style, with simple graphics. But don't worry, this doesn't take away from the fun, it adds a retro theme that you will surely love.

In my opinion, the decision by the programmers to use this type of graphics seems great to me, as it combines with the story within the game.

As for the sound, get ready to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Arstotzka. The effects are very realistic and above all rewarding. To give an example, the sound made by the stamp when stamping a document, or when we move a sheet from one place to another.

And what can I say about the main menu music. After you listen to it once you won't forget the rhythm.

A little bit of my experience with the game.

Well, after having told you about the plot, gameplay and visual aspects, I want to share with you a bit of my experience with this game.

The first encounter I had with it was when the pandemic was at its peak. I remember that in those routine days you couldn't leave the house, not even to go for a walk to see your relatives.

Well, one of those days I found in an internet page an ad of the game and the fame it had at that time. And of course I as a big fan of retro-themed games did not resist the temptation and I ventured to play it too.

I must say that at first it took me a bit to adapt to the controls and especially the review of the documents. Sometimes I got stressed out. Hahaha. But then I got the hang of it and managed to complete it several times.

One of the things I liked the most at the beginning was to feel that I had the power to deny or allow a visa at customs. Haha.

Fun facts.

Now comes another section that I'm sure you were waiting for, the fun facts, I bet you'll love them.

The first one is nothing more and nothing less than the endings of the game. Did you know that it has more than 20 different endings? I'll tell you that this is because every decision you make in the game has different repercussions. Some endings are very bad, while others are good.

This will certainly give much more reality to the game, because you don't know what is going to happen in each game you start. In my opinion this alone is a compelling reason to play the game.

Another curious fact is: In 2018 a Live action short about the game was released on some platforms. The video discusses many of the themes and difficult decisions you have to make every day in this title. I recommend that if you want to play the game you watch the short film first. That way you can get a perspective of what it's like.

Final words.

Saludos amigos gamers. En esta ocasión he regresado para compartir con ustedes una reseña y mis opiniones acerca de un juego que conocí hace algún tiempo y que aún a día de hoy sigue siendo uno de mis favoritos en su género. Me refiero a Papers Please.

Antes que nada, quiero hacerles dos preguntas: ¿Estas cansado de siempre probar los mismos géneros de juego?, ¿Te gustan los juegos que te hagan pensar y te planteen desafíos? Si tu respuesta a ambas preguntas es sí, entonces Papers Please podría convertirse en tu juego favorito.

Por lo tanto, los invito a acompañarme en esta reseña, donde les contaré todos sus detalles, algunos datos curiosos, los puntos que más me han gustado, entre muchas cosas más. Dicho esto, abróchense el cinturón que despegamos.

Argumento.

Para que puedan entender de qué va la trama del juego, comienzo contándoles que Papers Please es un titulo del género indie, desarrollado por Lucas Pope y lanzado en el 2013. El juego los pone en los zapatos de un inspector de inmigración, en una ficticia república llamada Arstotzka.

Su trabajo o el tuyo consistirá en verificar los documentos de cada persona que llegue a la frontera y tomar una decisión: decidir si entran o son deportados.

Puede que hasta este punto ustedes se estén imaginando que el juego puede ser muy simple o hasta aburrido. Pero déjenme decirles que es todo lo contrario, ya que se te pondrá a prueba. Por ejemplo, tendrán que tomar decisiones difíciles que afectarán la historia irreversiblemente.

También se probarán tus convicciones morales, como decidir si es mejor obedecer la ley o hacerse de la vista gorda. Hay más desafíos pero los veremos más adelante en el post.

Jugabilidad:

Llegó el momento que seguro estabas esperando, la sección para ver cómo es la jugabilidad o en palabras simples, cómo se juega.

La mecánica es la siguiente: todos los días tienes que ir a trabajar como inspector en la aduana. Por cada persona que atiendas, vas a ganar una cantidad x de dinero. Con eso, vas a pagar los alimentos, la renta de la casa, mantener a la familia, entre otros usos.

Sabiendo esto, ya conoces la base del juego. Entre más personas atiendas, más dinero ganas. En el caso de que no ganes lo suficiente, tu familia en el juego comenzará a pasar necesidades e incluso alguien puede fallecer.

¿Y cómo se juega? Todos los días te darán un reglamento. Lo único que tienes que hacer es comprobar que los documentos que traen las personas cumplan con las normas, como por ejemplo: que no estén vencidos, falsificados, que la foto esté correcta, entre muchísimos otros. Según vayas avanzando en el juego, la dificultad irá en aumento

En el caso de que encuentres una discrepancia, tienes el poder para denegar la entrada de la persona al país e incluso puedes arrestarla o como decimos coloquialmente, cogerla presa. Jaja. Pero no todo será pan comido, pues como dije anteriormente, vas a ser probado.

(Spoiler): un ejemplo es una pareja de ancianos que quiere ingresar al país, uno de ellos no tiene bien los documentos y te ruega que lo dejes pasar junto a su esposo para no viajar sola. Si eres benevolente y lo dejas pasar, te darás cuenta de que en realidad llevaba una bomba en su bolso y luego habrá consecuencias por esta decisión.

Pero ese es solo un ejemplo de los muchos que hay en el juego. Te aseguro que cada vez será más difícil rechazar o aprobar a una persona.

Gráficos y sonido.

En cuanto al aspecto visual, te cuento que no debes esperar gráficos de última generación, el juego tiene un estilo pixeleado, con gráficos simples. Pero no te preocupes, esto no le quita ni un poquito de diversión, más bien añade una temática retro que seguro te encantará.

En mi opinión la decisión por parte de los programadores de usar este tipo de gráficos me parece genial, pues combina con la historia dentro del juego.

En cuanto al sonido, prepárate para sumergirte en el ambiente de Arstotzka. Los efectos son muy realistas y sobre todo gratificantes. Por poner un ejemplo, el sonido que hace el sello al estampar un documento, o cuando movemos una hoja de un lugar a otro.

Y que puedo decir de la música del menú principal. Después que la escuches una vez no se te olvidará el ritmo.

Un poco de mi experiencia con el juego.

Bueno, después de haberles contado sobre la trama, la jugabilidad y los aspectos visuales, quiero compartir con ustedes un poco de mi experiencia con este juego.

El primer encuentro que tuve con él fue cuando la pandemia estaba en su apogeo. Recuerdo que en esos días rutinarios no se podía salir de la casa, ni siquiera a dar una vuelta para ver a los familiares.

Pues en un día de esos me topo en una página de internet un anuncio del juego y de la fama que tenía en ese momento. Y por supuesto yo como gran fan de los juegos con temática retro no resistí la tentación y me aventuré a jugarlo también.

Debo decir que al principio me costó un poco adaptarme a los controles y sobre todo la revisión de los documentos. A veces llegué a estresarme. Jajaja. Pero ya después le cogí la vuelta y logré completarlo varias veces.

Una de las cosas que más me gustaba al principio era sentir que tenía el poder para denegar o permitir un visado en la aduana. Jaja.

Datos curiosos.

Ahora llega otra sección que seguro estabas esperando, la de los datos curiosos, apuesto a que te encantarán.

El primero es nada más y nada menos que los finales del juego. ¿Sabías que tiene más de 20 finales distintos? Te cuento que esto se debe a que cada decisión que tomas en el juego tiene repercusiones distintas. Algunos finales son muy malos, mientras otros son buenos.

Esto sin duda le dará mucha más realidad al juego, pues no sabes que es lo va a suceder en cada partida que comiences. En mi opinión solo esto es un motivo de peso para jugarlo.

Otro dato curioso es: En el año 2018 se estrenó en algunas plataformas un corto Live action sobre el juego. En el video se tratan muchas de las temáticas y decisiones difíciles que hay que tomar cada día en este título. Les recomiendo que si quieren jugar el juego vean primero el corto. Así podrán tener una perspectiva de cómo es.
