Let's Play: Kerbal Space Program - Episode One!
How's it going everybody!
This isn't the normal type of post, but i decided to go ahead and step out of my comfort zone for this one - so please bear with me while I gather my thoughts!
Starting a New Journey
A while back, my good friend @nicksmitley gave me his old computer so I wouldn't be limited to using my phone for my Hive Posts!
It took me a while to get it all set up correctly, but once I did, I decided I wanted to use this gaming computer to try and Livestream my gameplay sessions, because I love to play videogames of all varieties! I also planned on setting up and attempting to manage my first YouTube channel in order to share my gameplay footage as well.
Another coworker of mine also live streams to twitch, so I plan on joining him once my I get my internet situation figured out, which may be a little longer than expected. This actually lead to the creation of the clan/gaming community FourTwoZero, which paved the way for the FourTwoZero Creations YouTube Channel.
Anyways, since I am "offline" so to speak (I currently use hotspot via my phones USB tethering option for downloads/updates) I decided to get a game I've wanted to play for a while now - Kerbal Space Program (KSP).
What is Kerbal Space Program (KSP)?
Kerbal Space Program is a space exploration simulator video game, originally release for PC in 2015 via direct purchase and through Steam. It was then released on Xbox and PlayStation 4 in 2017, and has since receive 2 DLC expansion packs, and numerous updates before the release of Kerbal Space Program 2 at the beginning of 2023.
The ultimate goal of Kerbal Space Program is to master the art of space travel and exploration, by unlocking all of the mysteries contained within the Kerbalverse!
The Inspiration for the Series
Since it's my first playthrough, I decided I wanted to test out my new setup, and share my first gameplay experience with others! Since I don't think my phone could handle hotspotting a Livestream, I decided to focus on building my YouTube channel first!
So, as I was beginning to record my gameplay, I decided to go ahead and start a let's play series, which I think will be a great way to start out my channel, especially with Kerbal Space Program!
Into The Kerbalverse
In this inaugural episode of Let's Play: Kerbal Space Program, I decided to jump straight into career mode of KSP, mainly because I was really excited to play, and excited to record - even though I was EXTREMELY nervous!!
I also thought I'd get an in-game tutorial to show me the ropes on how to get going with the game since it's based around rocket science, and has such a steep learning curve because of it.
Sadly, this was not the case.
I struggled for awhile on the basic functions of the game, and I didn't even really know where to start!
Once I finally found the missions, I accepted one for building and launching our first rocket. (All build and launch portions of the video have been sped up to conserve time)
The design process was fairly easy, although it did take a few moments to familiarize myself with the controls!
Once I was ready to launch, I struggled again attempting to figure out the keyboard shortcuts in order to actually launch the the craft!
After a few aimless clicks, I finally landed on the space bar, which activated the launch of our rocket!
Sadly enough, the craft was built, and placed horizontally, due to the fact that I designed it in the Space Plane Hanger, rather than the Vehicle Assembly Building (or VAB). So when I initially launched the rocket, it launched horizontally, instead of vertically like a rocket should, resulting in an immediate fiery explosion!
Luckily enough, there is an option to restart the launch, restart from vehicle assembly, or continue as is. I chose the option to restart from vehicle assembly, where I was able to to switch over to the Vehicle Assembly Building and finally get our rocket oriented correctly!
Back on the launch pad, the simple rocket looked pretty decent as it was finally ready for it's voyage! Originally, I recorded my voiceover with OBS and my basic "gaming headset" which sounded like absolute garbage, and in my beginner opinion, I don't think I could have fixed that audio!!
So, as I was smoking a few one hitters before launching our little rocket, I forgot the button to launch! It took me a few tries, but finally remembered it was SpaceBar!
Just like that, our rocket was off the ground and on its way up, shooting for the stars!
The parachute of our craft happened to deploy at the exact same time that we launched, so I'm very surprised that it remained intact throughout the launch sequence, and even as we came hurtling back towards Kerbin.
After a few long minutes, our beginner rocket, and our brave kerbalnaut, finally touched back down, resulting in a successful launch, recovery, and the completion of our very first mission!
This was just one of the many launches that I attempted within this episode, and since I don't really know what I'm actually doing in the game, there's plenty of other newbie shenanigans to witness as well!
To Be Continued...
Originally, this gameplay session was close to 2 hours long, and thanks to the DaVinci Resolve free video editor from Black Magic Design, I was about to get it down to a little over 30 minutes long!
Still pretty long in my opinion for a YouTube video, but I don't even feel like I've begun to scratch the surface of this game!
If you would like to see a more detailed video on my beginner builds, including which parts I used and their descriptions, let me know in the comment section down below!
