Doom is an iconic release. It is famous for the “will it run Doom” challenge that has fans porting the classic id Software title to just about everything (including a pregnancy test). This is another port, well hack would be more accurate, release of Doom for the Atari 2600. This version is making use of Dark Chambers for the base game. What is interesting is just how much “Doom” was transferred over.
The Essence of Doom is Here
When I say the essence of Doom is here, I mean the overall feel. That feeling of dread searching out health or ammunition is here. Doom Guy is clearly represented as are most of the enemies you will face. While their colors may be off a bit, their iconic designs are quite clear.
When scrolling vertically you are subject to jump scares as enemies just pop onto the screen. Same for entering a new room, there may or may not be an enemy waiting for you on the other side of that door.
This is Doom in 2D and still accomplishes keeping jump scares here and there.
The Fun Factor
I have never played Dark Chambers, so I have no idea how fun that game is. Doom 2600 is quite a bit of fun though. From the jump scares to the scavenging the levels for supplies while doing my best to eliminate enemies adds to the challenge.
Taking on the world of Doom in a 2D view is different. Not completely unique, there are many fan games and such that give the classic id Software title a similar viewpoint. As far as capturing the exploration and overall sense of dread, Doom 2600 does it so much better than similar hacks/ports/creations.
Head over to the AtariAge forums and grab your copy of Doom 2600 and just enjoy your trip to hell.
