When id Software released Doom, it was another step forward in their plan, if they had one back then. Building off the success of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom was more of everything. More violent, more graphical, more detailed, more enemies on screen at once, more to do. Just. More. Of. Everything. Then we got flooded with tons of Doom clones that were mere horrible attempts to cash in. That is not to say companies outside id Software were all horrible at this new emerging genre. Some games like Duke Nukem 3D, Powerslave and many others, took on the challenge to do more. Prodeus is one such title doing more with the basics of Doom. Though honestly, this looks more like a stop gap between Doom and Quake. In so many good ways.
Graphical violence with a 90’s flair
Graphically, Prodeus looks great, especially if you remember the mid to late 90’s shooters. Details all over the place from the floors to the walls to the items populating the levels. Details are everywhere.
I get a strong Space Hulk meets Quake vibe here. If you are not familiar with Space Hulk, the one released for consoles (3DO being the platform I played on). It was a first-person action strategy game. That aside as it doesn’t matter for this comparison, graphically, it was nitty, gritty, and created an amazingly morbid atmosphere visually.
Prodeus also features hand to hand combat with your enemies, a feature I first encountered in Space Hulk. It is nice to run up and just start plastering enemies with your fists.
Fast paced action
The action displayed in the trailer above is fast paced. I like this type of FPS. I am not interested in tracing my steps, finding a key, going over here, use the wrench, navigate a maze, kill 2 enemies along the way, etc. Just give me fast paced action and let me go.
If you are a fan of 90’s First-Person Shooters, then you will probably be right at home with Prodeus. Check it out on GoG.com and Steam.
