Capcom certainly put in the work to support the Commodore 64 back in the day. Between them and US Gold, over 30 Capcom titles graced the aging Commodore hardware, including Street Fighter 1 and 2, Final Fight, Bionic Commando, Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and even Strider 1 and 2. Thanks to fans we can soon add Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo to that list. Yeah, I could not believe it either but here we are.
So Close for a Commercial Release
The Commodore 64 was discontinued in April 1994. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo hit arcades in February 1994. Had the C64 held on for another year we might have seen an official port of SSF2T released back in late 94/early to mid-1995.
No matter, fans are coming to the rescue here, again, with a port of the arcade game for the C64. It looks amazing too.
Hold On While I Pick Up My Jaw From the Floor
Look, I grew up with the Commodore 64 and “cutting edge” for me was titles like Ultima, Sword of Fargoal, Tetris, etc. Not exactly cutting edge arcade titles. While Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo has obvious limitations rearing their heads, it is still leagues ahead of many commercial releases on the platform.
YouTube member RetroGL is working on this port with the help of some key people. Their work is absolutely amazing. They are doing an SNK vs Capcom for the C64 as well, I will cover it sooner than later, that EVERYONE needs to check out.
Back to SSF2T though. The car destroy stage is here, so is the barrel attack. When characters leap, they jump high enough to obscure the health and points section of the screen – I like that touch. Makes this feel more like we are watching a play, a recreation of sorts, giving the experience a new level of aesthetics.
Check it out and let the developers know what you think.
