Hello, gamers! I hope you're all doing well. Well, after a very busy week at work, I'm finally back. Besides work, I've had to focus on studying for a degree in character design, and that's what I'm here to talk about today. The world of games is always fascinating, and without a doubt, everything that goes into their design, formation, and concept is thrilling. It's what moves us, what draws us in, and what allows us to stay with one story after another.
The concept artist encompasses characters, creatures, settings, and weapons, depending on the assigned task or stage of development. Even the birth of a concept for an entire game or story can emerge from this process of the artist's conceptualization. Essentially, preparing to be a video game concept artist means developing yourself as a well-rounded creator capable of addressing and solving all problems, working on different aspects or projects simultaneously, exploring and expanding all creative processes. In my case, I'm working on a project with Demicore, while also working on other projects throughout my academic or training phase.
Approaching this degree means practically forgetting about drawing for the sake of drawing or studying drawing like in an art school or academy. It means starting to approach every drawing, idea, or assignment as a complete conceptualization project. Working along the same lines, building different aspects of the world and unifying the concepts. In this case, the assignment is a medieval RPG theme, with a focal point and background landscape, for the development of concept art that will be used for future development. Then I think about everything that world could be, I research. Research is a very important part. References: Dragon Age, Lord of the Rings, Starcraft, and other games that come to mind. I imagine a creature. Creatures are always fantastical, beyond the human element, in a mountainous landscape, and this creature, well, is from an element.
This is how the creative journey begins, and I begin to explore the concept. Sometimes I explore the concept over and over again, other times, like in this case, it's clear, and I just need to keep delving into what I'm seeing on paper. So here I think it might have an element, an element that characterizes this creature, which is also familiar to its environment. It's as if it were some kind of dragon made of volcanic rocks. Then I wondered how to create the landscape, so this is where I consider which elements to integrate or not. This landscape could be arid, isolated, lost in time, or it could have more nature, there's water, which exists. Something that always captivates me about RPGs with incredible environments is precisely how the landscapes or the composition embrace you, and that's precisely what I'm looking for with this design.
This design still needs colors and more detail; I've modified some things and added others. However, for me, the vision is clear. I know what I want with it, the vibe I'm going for, and what I'm trying to convey, with the creature as my main subject here. This is my first concept project at this level for an RPG. I hope you like it and find it enjoyable, and I'll be bringing you more content on character design and Demicore's progress!
